The Arch of Galerius, locally known as Kamara, is one of Thessaloniki’s most iconic Roman landmarks. Built between 298 and 303 AD to celebrate Emperor Galerius’ victory over the Persians, it was originally part of a monumental complex connecting the Rotunda to the imperial palace along the Via Egnatia. Today, only three of the original eight pillars remain, but the arch still impresses with intricate reliefs depicting Galerius’ military campaigns. The main arch is about 9.7 meters wide and 12.5 meters tall, with smaller side arches still visible. Located in the heart of the city, it’s easily accessible on foot and free to visit, making it a must-stop while exploring Thessaloniki.
