The Best Way to See Rome? On a Running Tour at Sunrise | Condé Nast Traveler

"An early-morning run through Rome with this company felt like discovering a different city: Isa Calidonna—licensed tour guide, running coach, and archaeologist with a PhD in art history—paced me along sleepy sampietrini streets and toward hidden Madonnelle shrines, sharing the small, easily missed details that offer insight and context. Founded just before the pandemic, it offers private tours and a special Jubilee run highlighting the city’s Madonnelle; options include the best of Rome ticking off major landmarks, a scenic route through the tranquil gardens of Villa Borghese, a classic Colosseum tour, and even an Emily in Paris–themed tour. All routes are around three miles with plenty of built-in stops, can be adapted for all abilities (even power walking), and, as a novice runner, the perfectly judged pacing and hill awareness meant it never felt strenuous yet still left me feeling accomplished—and back at my hotel before 9 a.m., buzzing with the rare sense of having Rome’s icons to myself." - Sophie Prideaux

I ran with Isabella for the Hidden Rome running tour. It was amazing to see some of Rome's iconic attractions with no crowds. We walked right up to the doors of the Pantheon and peeked in the doorway to view to Oculus. Isabella is a wealth of knowledge and pointed out many unique features that I would have never found on my own, like the house with 100 portraits, the beautiful art in the hidden walkways, and the exact spot of the assassination of Julius Caesar. She also pointed out a cat sanctuary that we really enjoyed visiting later in the day, and an amazing restaurant where we had a tasty dinner. The traditional Italian coffee experience at the end was also a wonderful treat. I would recommend her to anyone that wants to see Rome in a unique and personal way. I will definitely book another running tour with her if/when I return to Rome! Thank you Isabella!

This experience was absolutely perfect! Isabella not only educated us about everything we saw but from start to finish she helped us with every little detail. She catered the tour around our schedule and our little one. We broke it up between 2 days. Being a family with a small child we did the normal walking tour and it was truly an experience of a lifetime. Isabella has a passion for her work and truly enjoys teaching people about the full history of Rome. I would recommend any and everyone to her and if you want to truly experience Romes history going on her tour is a must! Thank you Isabella for an experience and memories for a lifetime!!! My husband and I did The Best of Rome running tour and it was such a perfect way to see the city early in the morning! Isabella was a fantastic guide and provided so much information while we jogged around the city (it was very safe—little traffic!). I would highly recommend!!

Excellent tour of the Roman sights! We were with Isabella for three days seeing the Vatican, St. Angelo’s Castle and the Colosseum. She is very knowledgeable and prepared with pictures to support her historical narrative. She is so pleasant and fun to spend time with. I highly recommend hiring Isabella for your visit to Rome! Grazie Isabella, we will be back!

Me and my husband did the Hidden Rome running tour and it was more than worthwhile! Isabella showed us so many places in the alleys and streets of Rome that we would never have seen if we were just by ourselves. She also gave lovely restaurant recommendations that we were able to try in our own time, and ended the tour at a coffee shop that served very strong and unique Italian coffee. I would highly suggest signing up for this experience if you are looking to explore the overlooked spots and hidden gems in the streets of Rome! Not to mention you can get a workout in early during the day with great company.

This was so much fun! We did the Hidden Rome jogging tour and it was my favorite tour we did in our 3 week Italy trip. Isabella was a great guide, easy to chat and get along with, and it was such a unique experience. I would 100% recommend to anyone interested in doing walking/jogging tours.

Had a lovely private tour of the Roman Colosseum with Isa in May, just as everything opened in Roma! Isa was so passionate and engaging about the history of Roma! Highly recommend Isa!
