Arco de Santa María

A grand medieval gateway and remains one of the most iconic landmarks. Originally part of the city walls, it was transformed into a triumphal arch. Its impressive facade is decorated with statues of local heroes and legendary figures, including El Cid and the founder of the city.

We traveled from USA. From Madrid airport we rented a car and drove to here. It’s spectacular and very impressive architecture, the Arch of Santa María is one of the most emblematic monuments of the city of Burgos. This is in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It is one of the twelve ancient access gates that the Burgos wall had in the Middle Ages. It connects the Santa María Bridge, over the Arlanzón River, with the Plaza del Rey San Fernando, where the cathedral is located.

Very scenic place including river, walking area , park and cathedral. All together with Gate of Santa Maria makes thus place kind a magical. You need to see it yourself to appreciate the views and beauty of area. Don’t forget about Italian cream on the right side !

Be ready to enter medieval Burgos through this amazing gate, very well preserved. You can even get in for free and admire the fantastic wooden ceilings, the views from the tower, or some temporary exposition inside the rooms.

Super nice, including the bridge behind it. Worth a visit.

This is the old entrance to the walled city of Burgos. İt has been very well looked after and it gives you the feeling of the ancient times..Afeter a beautiful walk through the park along side the river you enter the holy part of Burgos where you can find the famous Burgos Cathedral.. İt is a woth while effort to visit all these holy monuments and ancient architecture if you are passing close to Burgos city.

What an entrance this Arch makes. I have seen many arches and this is one of the best. The historical detailing and completeness of this arch is impressive. Its location is just across a short walking bridge, where a lovely walking path runs parallel to the city wall. It leads right into the Cathedral square and makes for a fantastic lead up to the Cathedral. Also makes.for a great meeting place as it is hard to miss.

The Arco is one of the twelve medieval gateways to the beautiful city of Burgos. This particular one is right by the river and makes for a grand entrance to the Catedral. The founders of the city can be seen on the facade, along with that of El Cid. Gorgeous! ¡Buen Camino!
