Arechi Castle

There is limited public transport to this venue and the local tourist app identifies a walking path which is now closed. The road up to the castle has no footpath and is a little dangerous to walk up. The castle is interesting and has spectacular views. It would benefit from money being invested and further development though.

Beautiful castle building. The upkeep and staff assistance was very bad. Water area that was once a historic well, was with waste or trash. Weeds through all areas, beer bottles and more trash everywhere. Safety guards for non entry areas were broken, and there weee many signs on the ground broken or just faded. Very little in English to explain the history of the place. Only time staff were approachable was when taking money from us. Then all 6 sat in the entrance smoking and ignoring patrons. Such a shame as it’s so iconic and could easily be maintained.

Definitely worth a stop if you’re in Salerno! There’s a path you can take to walk up to the castle, but we chose to drive. Parking is free, you have to walk up for about five minutes to get to the entrance. A ticket is 6€ for the castle and the museum. It’s a great viewpoint and very fun to walk around and explore.

We visited the castle… unfortunately, we had to walk along the main road since all the trails were closed. That made the way not only dangerous but also much longer. As for the castle itself – maybe right after its renovation it was worth something, but now, once the project period ended, it seems funding or motivation ran out. It’s no longer maintained: some paths are blocked, lamps are broken, and everything feels fenced off. You still have to pay €6 per person for about 50 square meters of museum space, with very few exhibits inside. Would I repeat this trip? Definitely not!

Grab your walking shoes and a water bottle and you can spend a couple of hours here climbing the stairs /steps/ walkways around the castle. For those with mobility issues there is a lift up to the terrace for pics, but no more. We loved it, but it’s our kinda day! Cafe /bar is now just a vending machine which is a shame, but the staff were lovely. You can get right to the castle from Salerno on the no.19 bus. Great morning 🧡

We couldn't actually make it up to the castle. Warning for others planning to climb directly from Salerno town itself and avoid the road walking, the gate you need is very much locked. You can still get nice views of the bay from the highest point you can reach, but to get to the top it's either road walking or getting a bus.

An amazing site to see this medieval castle and museum overlooks the town of Salerno, Italy, and the surrounding harbors and Bay. The views are breathtaking and the history is very interesting to learn. Amazing that humans built such a place so long ago.
