The staff were lovely, including the receptionists, cleaners and F&B personnel, and the location was unbeatable. Also, the decor was very attractive. But the facilities themselves were well below average. A lack of thought meant basic things were not provided. No shampoo or conditioner in the shower, just two different shower gels - how are you meant to wash your hair? No antibacerial handsoap by the sink, just yet more shower gel - not hygenic. Dental kits were unavailable, even for a fee that I would not have minded paying. There was no iron in the room. Neither were there tea or coffee-making facilities. (If not a machine, the modern international traveller would expect a kettle with some instant sachets at the very least). The minibar had only full-sugar cokes or still waters inside. No snacks, no sugar-free options, and no booze. The most incomplete minibar I have seen anywhere.
The gym was too small for any more than two people to work out at once. The swimming pool was diminuitive. These features had clearly been added for the perfunctory purpose of being able to list them on the hotel's marketing. The breakfast buffet offered no whole or unprocessed meats, just ultra processed chorizo stirred with onions - even bacon or normal sausages would have been better, if marginally more expensive for the procurement-team to source. The filter coffee was bitter, but drinkable.
Overall, despite the amazing customer-facing staff and beautiful location, I could not recommend the Arena Ipanema to any of my friends as it does not merit the price associated with a four-star property.
