23 Best Bars in Rome

"Quite possibly Rome's coolest bar—a moody, late-night speakeasy that's a mash up of bare-brick walls and exposed pipes and your granny's florid armchair beside frilly white doilies covered in old candle wax. The cocktails are even served in what looks like your gran's old crystal wear; but that's where the similarities end. The crowd—so-called beautiful people, with long, glossy hair and tattoos—is half of why you come. The other half, of course, is for the drinks. We love “Le Papillon,” a heady, warming blend of whisky, lime juice, lapsang tea syrup, pepper, and ginger beer." - Maresa Manara

Argot Speakeasy was recommended to us by local industry bartenders at Freni e Frizioni — specifically Sara — and it turned out to be one of the most memorable bar experiences of our time in Rome. From the moment you enter and descend the stunning circular staircase, you feel like you’ve stepped into a hidden world. The basement bar is beautifully designed with moody, timeless décor that truly makes you feel like you’ve time-traveled into a secret, intimate speakeasy. The ambiance alone is worth the visit. What truly elevated our experience, however, was Emanuele. We had the pleasure of meeting Emanuele on just his second day on the job — yet you would never have known it. As someone who owns a bar myself, I pay very close attention to service, timing, awareness, and guest interaction, and Emanuele was exceptional in every way. He was attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without being scripted, and genuinely invested in making sure we had the best possible experience. He spoke so proudly about Argot, its cocktail program, and the creativity behind each drink. His enthusiasm felt authentic, not rehearsed — the kind of passion you can’t train, only hire. Over the course of several hours, he checked in thoughtfully, anticipated our needs, and made us feel truly welcome. That level of attentiveness and professionalism is rare, especially so early into a new role, and it speaks volumes about his natural talent and dedication to hospitality. To top it off, Argot also features live music, which is surprisingly rare to find in Rome. The live guitarist was incredible, with a sultry voice that paired perfectly with the red, dim lighting around the stage, creating a sexy, intimate atmosphere that brought the entire room together. Between the cocktails, the live music, the stunning ambiance, and Emanuele's outstanding service, Argot Speakeasy is a must-visit. We will absolutely return on our next trip to Rome — and a big reason why is Emanuele. Five stars all around.

The establishment looks sketchy but it's part of the vibe! The place was cozy with fun decor and service was great. The drinks were unique and some of the drinks were in unique glassware. I definitely would recommend as the staff was friendly and fun.

Daniele and Chachia our bartenders were so amazing. The level of craftsmanship is so expert, would def come back. One of my favorite speakeasies in Rome, I prefer this to Jerry Thomas

I loved it so much I went twice! The cocktail list is incredible. Perfectly balanced drinks and always an intimate quiet vibe. Bartenders were awesome: kind and knowledgeable. You can tell that their craft is truly an art form. Can’t recommend enough!

This place is such a gem! Eugenia was our bartender and she was so friendly and knowledgeable. Loved the music and overall vibe. A versatile list of craft cocktails and traditional drinks too!

Amazing “speakeasy” cocktail bar. Located in the heart of Rome, yet off the beaten path somehow. I visited on a quiet Tuesday night and was well cared for by Daniele. Great service, well crafted and balanced cocktails, nice execution and presentation and a thoughtfully curated menu concept. And, as an American traveler, it’s always nice to see some bourbon on the shelves! #bourbonabroad

We had such a wonderful evening at Argot Speakeasy! The drinks were absolutely fantastic, and the atmosphere was just perfect. But what really made our night special was chatting with the mixologist, Gianluca. He was so friendly and passionate about his craft! We just loved the whole experience and can’t wait to come back the next time we're in Rome.

Google
Hands down best cocktail bar in the area. Ring the buzzer to have someone bring you in. More spacious that it looks at first. Cocktails are delicious and well balanced. Different flavor profiles for all palates and best priced as well (paid more or the same for terrible or average cocktails elsewhere).

Yelp
This place is special. We do go to cocktail bars a lot and this is one of the best I've experienced. We were there early on a weeknight, so a very chill vibe. Cocktails were outstanding. Unique cocktails and presented with some flare, but not over-the-top showy. Bartenders take real care in the preparation and the results are some really unique drinks.

Yelp
Speakeasy true to the definition. Hidden in plain sight. Took us a while to find the door. But it's on the corner in the alley. Just look at the address and push the button on the video door bell. It will have Argot on it. Great music and very cool vibe. Looks like a cellar or basement in the old world. Cool motif. Staff were friendly and welcoming. No cover but we were early and no one else in the place. Looks like you can smoke on one side and not on the other, so that's cool with me and my cigars. Will certainly visit again when we return to Rome.

Yelp
It took persistence to get in this place. It's a private speak easy. They charge 10 Euros each to join. They take cash only. After an ATM trip and some interesting exchanges with the doorman we were let in. Underground, stone walls, cozy and hipster... great place to sit in a small group and enjoy some cocktails. They stay open until 4am which was a big bonus. I'll be back.

Yelp
Great speakeasy with live music in a very rustic and historic downstairs wine cellar/cave like setting. Awesome mixed drinks and nice furnishings--there are even 3 old baseball stadium style seats next to the small stage by the performers. Great bartenders and drinks as well. You pay a one time membership fee your first visit (10 Euro) that is good for a year and you present on following visits to avoid this entry charge on future visits.
