Where to Stay in Edinburgh on Your Trip (Updated 2025)

"This laid-back hostel is located in an old townhouse and feels more like staying with a friend than in a hostel — everything is cozy and homey. It's on a quiet residential street about a 10–15-minute walk from the Old Town; I appreciated the kitchen for cooking, the relaxing backyard space to hang out and meet other travelers, and the super lovely staff who really make you feel at home." - Matthew Kepnes

We were two people and stayed in a room on the top floor. The room was small and the bed uncomfortable, but everything was clean. The bathrooms were also clean, though the main issue was that there was no hot water on the top floor, so we had to go downstairs to take a shower. The water pressure wasn’t great either, but for the price we paid, it was acceptable. The location is okay.

Not a great stay, I can get over the dated decor but the beds were extremely uncomfy, bedding old and worn out and not clean at all. We were given towels the size of a facecloth, showers pretty poor and the reception hours were extremely limited. Overall still expensive for the quality of stay and service and wouldn’t recommend for a trip to Edinburgh.

My week long stay at Argyle backpackers was wonderful. The location is perfect, near the park, near the lovely St Andrews parish and for hikers; Arthur’s seat. For poor students like me, the pricing is very reasonable and the people seemed to be very generous with putting in free food. The staff were very friendly and reasonable.

Rooms not very clean, and asking for a towel (£2 only cash) was the most unpleasant experience as the receptionist was very disagreeable. Barely no pressure in the shower as well. The location is great though.

Couldn’t recommend Argyle more! The room was cute & clean, bathrooms were updated, and the shared spaces were wonderful! Cozy, eclectic, communal! One of my best hostel stays to date!

Nice location. Homely hostel. Bad mattresses. Window shutter in bedroom wouldn’t close fully. At times water problems in showers. Overpriced.

The room was clean. The hostel is very well located. The issue was mainly with the shower for which there was only luke warm water. The kitchen was also quite dirty, which is unfortunate.

The location is quiet/safe, staff are very friendly, and the space is comfortable and clean! Will definitely be staying here in the future!

Yelp
The Argyle Backpackers is in studenty Marchmont, just off the lovely Meadows, and is definitely the place to stay if you want to avoid the hollow dorms of the bigger hostels in the centre of town. The hostel takes up two townhouses, side-by-side, and has male/female dorms, single, double and twin rooms. Kitchens are good and there's a nice conservatory out the back where you can eat your breakfast. Internet and friendly staff with good grocery shops across the road make it the only hostel I recommend to visiting friends.

Yelp
I've stayed here twice, and each time was very pleasant. The rooms are clean, comfy, and usually pretty quiet. Staff are all helpful and approachable. The neighborhood is charming, with plenty of cheerful cafés and pubs within walking distance. The meadows are a block away (perfect for runners!), and all tourist attractions are close enough to be easily accessible, but far enough to feel like you are staying in a real city, not in a postcard. I highly recommend!
