"State-Run Handicraft Shop The Instituto de Artesanias Oaxaqueños, also known as "ARIPO" has a wide selection of crafts from all over the state of Oaxaca . It's housed in a colonial building on Garcia Vigil near the old aqueduct, and has this pretty central courtyard. Rooms surrounding the courtyard each display a different type of craft. You'll find textiles, wood, ceramic, metal, palm, jewelry, and more. Quality is good; the institute holds yearly contests and some of the prize-winning pieces are on sale here. Open Monday to Friday only, from 9 am to 7 pm."

This store seems like a museum from the outside and that’s very keen marketing. They also have a terrific selection of the finest Mexican folk art for decent prices, but keep in mind that you should never ever ask them to ship anything. When I first arrived. I asked whether they could ship because I have a serious injury. I am disabled and cannot lift. The manager or whatever his title was at the front and I discussed it briefly and I asked him about the shipping and stated “ it can’t be much maybe 20 or $30?” and he nodded his head yes. Because I trusted him, I went ahead and paid for $150 worth of product, and left it there to be shipped Without so much as a receipt. He told me that he was going to message me on Monday with the shipping. I was nervous about that, but I wanted to trust him because he seemed nice and so did the employees. Well, come Monday, he told me that 10 pounds worth of product cost $174 to ship and that I had to wire it in pesos. At that point, I asked for a refund because that doubled the price of my purchase and $177 was about four times what my local post office said it should cost . He was clearly Taking me for at least an extra hundred dollars. He refused to give me a refund, even though they still had the product. Do NOT TRuST them when it comes to shipping.

From the street, I thought this was a museum. And it kind of is but you can buy everything they have! Just to be clear it is a store but they have an incredible collection of goods from artist across Oaxaca! It's an easy place to spend money and the value is unbeatable for the prices. I spent three weeks shopping for a nice brimmed hat and finally found one of the right fit and quality here. Add to all of this friendly and helpful service and you have a first class place! Gracias!

This spot is sensational especially if you are wanting to buy some handmade goods, or even just enjoy and look around, there is a lot to look at and enjoy when it comes to textiles, carvings or pottery and more. The prices are quite decent, it is free to get in and there are toilets in this area too which are clean and free. “Jonique Life” If you find value in our reviews please consider following our social media outlets on Facebook and Instagram as we highlight magical places you can add to your ever growing bucket list.

Gorgeous and charming selection of handicrafts, home goods and rugs. Very high quality and definitely on the higher end of stores I visited while in Oaxaca.

Beautiful shop with a great selection of artesanías and clothing from different artisans. Fairly priced and beautifully displayed. Friendly staff.

Great space - looks like a museum but it's a shop with several different sections.

Several reviewers point out that they've gone to the store and it's been closed. We walked by around 1:00 p.m. and the door was closed but then someone came out and said come back in 20 minutes. We did and I then asked the security guard what their hours are and here they are even though it's unclear if they follow them. Monday through Friday 9:30 - 6:00. Saturday and Sunday 10:00 - 5:00. As for a rating, I'm just beginning to compare prices with other shops so I cannot say anything about the pricing. And as people note, there are definitely a lot of folks working and watching the visitors to each of the sales rooms.

Yelp
Features local artists and one of a kind art items for your souvenirs or to ship back home. This is where you want to shop for those unique pieces that you cant find anywhere else.

Yelp
The alebrijes are lovely and very expensive. Some nice clothing.... The staff is helpful but hover as if one were going to steal something. I tripped on the flooring in the last room and my hand brushed against the narrow and slippery glass shelves, knocking a small clay figure to the floor. They said it was one of a set of six and I would need to buy them all! They looked like the amateurish clay figures a six year old makes. I didn't want any of them, and after a phone negotiation with the ceramicist, a lower price was agreed on. Buyer beware! Prices are way too high for things one can buy within two blocks! We will never go back!

Yelp
Like many places within the city, I walked by this place at least 6 times before I realized it was open to the public. It's a plaza of approximately 6 gift shops. When you walk in, you have to sign in (and out when you leave) and you must check backpacks at the front. I really liked this place because unlike other gift shops where you get followed (I never figured out if it was to deter shoplifting or just to be close if you had a question). The prices were comparable to other places but the atmosphere was so much more peaceful! The artesanies where they had this episode inducing music on repeat and or getting followed, I spent more money here than anywhere else.
