Arkansas Diner - Gastro Obscura

"Taiwan’s bustling port city of Kaohsiung might not seem the ideal place to dig into American southern comfort food. But in the city’s Zuoying District, this Arkansan-run diner dishes up the real deal. Since 2015, it has become a popular destination for locals and homesick expats alike. Dishes include a wide range of burgers, from the relatively traditional bacon cheeseburger to such delectably over-the-top offerings as “the Robin” and “the Coot.” Other offerings include deep-fried hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, Frito pies, meatloaf, chicken fried steak, barbecue ribs, and “Arkansas Bowls.” For breakfast, customers can select from a variety of scrambles, pancakes, waffle plates, and biscuits and gravy. Dessert is a must, with classic American offerings such as apple and pecan pie, banana splits, and sundaes, as well as possum pie and raccoon pie. Drinks include beers, a selection of decently priced cocktails, and a wide variety of milkshakes. The restaurant’s atmosphere is a charming homage to Arkansas and American pop culture: shelves lined with numerous toy cars and action figures, many still in their original packaging, Arkansas Razorbacks paraphernalia, antique comic books, southern folk instruments, dollar-store art, and an Elvis tour poster. Tongue-in-cheek signs hang on the door to the kitchen, warning customers to keep out in typical country fashion: one reads “Warning. No Tresspassing. Violators Will Be Shot. Survivors Will Be Shot Again.” The kitchen counter is hidden from view by a wooden flap, but the sound of a crowing rooster lets the waiting staff know when food is ready to serve. Know Before You Go The diner is a block away from Aozihdi Station on the MRT's red line. Take a right off Dashun Rd on Xiuming St. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday through Tuesday." - gettyhesse

The first time I came to this place I was skeptical Kaohsiung could offer an authentic experience of a burger from the US of A. Well, it turns out the owner is from Arkansas as the restaurant name implies and as soon as you step into the dining room you can smell the greasiness from the meat patties and fries. That's when I realized I was in for an extremely pleasant eating experience. Being a frequent customer this time I opted for the double Cheese burger. I mean, just look at the picture and video. It looks yummy and it tastes yummy. Everything I've had here is good. I also like their Apple pie.

Great little American-style restaurant hidden away in the vicinity of the Dashun Costco. Superb selection of burgers, finger good, as well as staples of the southern cuisine. Oh and the owner is frequently there and ready for a friendly chitchat. The recently opened milkshake shop downstairs also looks great, but haven't had the chance to try one. Prices are fair but by no means cheap. Try the triple cheese burger for a nice dose of cholesterol and don't forget the fries Parking might be an issue though as space comes at a premium.

Service: Bad. We're a group of 3, we just sat down, and other clients came in, the female owner of the restaurant just told us to spend XXX dollars quickly before introducing the menu. She might wanna go serve others, but that attitude and rude tone make us feel not respected and uncomfortable. (Seeing the reply for the negative comments, I'm not surprised. If I were a service provider, I'd think about why they're unhappy, and what the clients need / want.) Food: Rich and oily. Not an option for those who seek for light meals. But if you're looking for American food / dishes of hometown, it's your paradise. Environment: Cool American style. Advantage is we could meet other English speakers here. A bad impression: We heard the female owner shouted at people who parked in front of the restaurant, and tried to confront one of the them. Even he just left, didn't argued with her, she still followed him to the building, pushed the door and "educate" him. Surprising. Those who park might live there or are clients of another restaurant, or maybe potential clients... Like my gf and I parked for a short time there once, discussing about what to eat, but didn't come in eventually, the employees inside just came outside and stared at us. We wouldn't eat here but for meeting with friends though. Like in Chinese said, it's a 一次店, not worthy of visiting again.

Back again March '24. Raise rating to 4. Had the ribs and a large salad plus chocolate pecan dessert. Food: Ribs done right, meat falls off the bone. Salad was ok but a bit expensive for what you get. Dessert had good taste, crust was a bit too hard though. Service: This time they allowed us to eat in the ground floor to accommodate my wife which was nice. Service was still good. One negative is they stick to the menu too closely - like typical Taiwan restaurant. An American restaurant would allow slight adjustments to accommodate guest requests. Overall prices a just a bit high. -------- Food is ok. Had waffles plus eggs and tater plate. Friends had pancakes and biscuit burger. Service is good. Tater tots were good. Nice and crispy. We ordered a second helping. ----- Never serve cold butter with pancakes, waffles, bread, etc. Plan ahead and have some ready at room temperature. Waffle was just ok. The syrup was decent.

This was a highlight of our trip to Kaohsuing. We ate local food all week and were ready for western dishes. Our group of 6 people were completely happy with every dish we ate. Portions are huge. Service is professional. The owner is great to talk with (when he’s not super busy making great orders). Highly recommended. I’m laughing a few of the reviews saying steak should not be fried or that ribs should not be soft. I’ve eaten a lot of southern food in the United States and around the world and this place is authentic and excellent.

This was a wonderful place to have a wonderful dinner. I went there with a group of four at 5:30 pm. We were greeted quickly and shown around the restaurant before we sat down. The restaurant is very clean and tidy. The decor in the restaurant is fun and nostalgic! It brought me back to childhood memories of growing up in America! The people that work, there are very professional and kind. They speak Chinese and English equally as well. All the food we ordered was fantastic and hot when it got to the table. The price of the food was well worth the portion served. We had wonderful ice cream, milkshake, and brownie for dessert. I have to say the possum pie dessert was the best dessert I’ve ever had. It was a mixture of cream cheese, chocolate, pudding, and a sweet wonderful gram cracker like crust. It was just sweet enough, and so delicious!!! We will definitely come back to Arkansas restaurant soon. Thank you so much for everything !!!

Visited all the diners in Kaohsiung, Arkansas was the best for me. Biscuits and gravy are not easy to find in Asia, and it was a nice treat to enjoy in a familiar diner setting.
