Ok, so, I went to the Arlington Drafthouse to attend a comedy show with Heather McDonald. I've seen her a few times, so I knew I'd enjoy the show. However, because it would be my first time at this location, I wondered how the experience would be...especially from what I'd heard about office chair seating. Hmmm.
First things first, parking. The website shows that parking is available in the Drafthouse lot behind the Drafthouse catty corner to the back of the theater. The parking signage scared me away at first. I thought it was the right lot, but because it doesn't reference the Drafthouse, I wasn't sure and there is no attendant. An attendant at a lot across the street directed me back to the lot and told me it was for the theater...I think it's true. Lol. Parking in the lot is free. Parking on the street and in the other lot was not.
The doors opened at 6:15 PM, which is when I arrived. The show started at 7:30. A person checks your ticket for the show and your ID when you walk in. They direct you toward the seating area, which was easy to access.
Because I arrived a little more than an hour before the show, there were maybe 20 other people there when I walked in. It was bigger than I expected and had a lot of seats available. I got a center spot on the second row which put me eye level with the stage. Perfect. Oh, and the office chairs were comfy and somehow made sense. Each had its own armrests, which was great.
Here's the problem.
I had already looked at the menu online so I knew what I wanted. I was there alone so I made myself busy on Twitter. Although I was told that a server would come to my seat and I had the sign up to show that I wanted service, 15 minutes after I chose a seat, no one had come. Around this time, I looked around to see that more people had arrived. Even though many of the other patrons came after me, they were being served while I still had not been. As I surveyed the room and watched the others with water, drinks or whatever they ordered, it was then that I noticed I was the only Black person in the room. Hmmmm.
After 30 minutes of not being served or checked on at all, two women (not Black) sat directly to the right of me. Because they wanted to order food and drinks, I took the service request sign which had been in front of me and slid it over in front of them because they did not have one of their own. I figured we could share it and wait together. Within 3 minutes of their arrival, a waitress came and took their order. I was floored! Fortunately, after their order was taken, the waitress asked me if I had been helped. When I told her no, she told me that my seat happened to be the beginning of another section and she would ask the waitress assigned to my section to check on me.
That waitress never came.
When the waitress brought the drinks and food to my seat neighbors, she asked if my waitress had come. When I told her that I still hadn't been asked for my order, she apologized and took my order. By this point, me and the two women who sat beside me had been engaging in conversation. They were interested in finding out about me being by myself, and I was grateful for them showing up because that was how I got service. Who knows what would have happened had they not sat beside me.
Long story short, the waitress covering my seat area never EVER came the whole evening. The other waitress adopted me and I thanked her for taking me on. I don't exactly know why this occurred, but it should be looked into. Perhaps the end of one section and the start of another isn't clearly defined. I don't know. It was weird. Very weird. The optics aren't good.
The popcorn was ok. They note on the menu that they don't give extra butter, which I would have liked. And the drinks were just ok too. Both the food and drinks were reasonably priced.
If the person who waited on me had been my actual waitress and had checked on me at the same speed as other people were checked on, my rating would be higher. However, because I really don't know the why and how behind my experience, I rank it a 3 instead of a 1 or 2 solely because of how the other server stepped up to assist me when I was in need of a drink!
