25 Places Reborn Through Graffiti and Street Art

"Strolling through downtown Rapid City, the second-largest city in South Dakota, the stray bit of graffiti here and there is not that shocking, but the vandalism-covered side street known as Art Alley is a surprising gallery of civil disobedience that is (mostly) beloved by the locals. A brick-paved alley that runs from Sixth to Seventh Streets between Main and St. Joseph, Art Alley is covered with the works of street artists, from amateur to professional, on every surface. The walls, telephone pools, pipes, dumpsters, and anything else that happens to be a part of the urban landscape are subject to redecoration in the tight alleyway. With artists constantly adding to and covering up each other’s works, the alley remains a dynamic, ever-changing landscape with something different to see each time you go. Over the years it has also featured paintings on canvas, sculptures, and other art forms presented as though it was a true gallery space. Operating since 2005 without any major law enforcement interference, Art Alley is unique in that the alley is city property but the walls which are covered with artwork are privately owned. There is no board or director in charge of Art Alley, but artist Todd Rigione acts as unofficial “curator.” Citizens remain divided as to whether it is art or an eyesore." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Its ok with some cool art and free to enjoy while checking out shops downtown.

Sarah Hartman

Google
Cool to walk through and see all the different graffiti, most of it was nonsensical and messy, but a few great pieces.

Jennifer S

Google
Mostly graffiti, but still worth checking out if you’re walking in the area.

Karen Rainford

Google
This was interesting because it's obviously not a set of professional murals, so the quality was uneven. I do love the concept of community art at all levels.

Ash M

Google
It’s cute, worth a walkthrough.

Were just passing by and got mesmerized by it! A must see!

Google
Free parking Free admission Great experience for both kids and adults Minimal walking Wheel chair and child stroller accessible I really appreciated and loved Art alley. The art work is unique and beautiful. I took so many photos and still wasn't able to capture every aspect of Art Alley. Art Alley is close to shopping, parking and restaurants. Easy to find via GPS

Google
Unfortunately mostly graffiti that is probably covering some good work. You need a permit to put your art there and the city can be a bit more selective of what goes up on the walls. Is a neat idea but looks trashy at this point. Very litter art that’s worth mentioning.

Yelp
The art alley was super cool. Lots of cool different artwork for picture props and to just look at!

Yelp
Fun for an alley. Story is the alley was getting graffiti tagged, local art council decided to embrace it. Someone was installing a large piece as we went by. Sign posted to seek permission before any further graffiti added.

Yelp
In the alley that runs from Sixth to Seventh, the walls and stairs and dumpsters are an evolving canvas where artists share their stories and social commentaries. Honor Life. End Gun Violence. Community. Safety. Interesting to be able to chat for a few minutes with an artist as he repaired his work. Each artist is permitted and has to get permission from the building's owner to paint. Artistic content has to be appropriate for all ages and profanity is not allowed. Definitely worth a stop if you are visiting Rapid City's "City of Presidents" walk.

Yelp
It probably should be called Grafitti Alley. There were some interesting pieces but nothing that screamed amazing. It's worth the 5 minute stroll to look up close.

Yelp
I'm s big fan of street art. Being from the Bay Area this reminded me of home. Fun to see people's work.

Yelp
Cool little place to walk through. I assume that it's changing all the time. I was visiting from out of town. I think it's worth it. It doesn't take a long time we just drove straight through the Alley but it definitely took us a second to find. Don't use maps through your iPhone. Definitely type in this address attached to this location on Yelp.

Yelp
SUPER COOL!!! this was SO awesome to walk through!! every time I expected the artwork to be over, there was more! also, every piece of art was 100% safe for work.

Yelp
Def. worth a quick stroll if you are in the area. I'm glad I found it on a tourist guide while waiting for my friends at the airport - we breezed into town - walked around a bit - grabbed a bite and saw Art Alley before heading off to Mount Rushmore. Rapid City is a cute little town full of interesting things and friendly people and this Art Alley added to the charm. I saw some really neat graffiti art from some seriously talented people. It's really cool that the city has created a space where people can come and practice their craft, with permits of course. ;)

Yelp
In most cities if you saw paintings or mural that represented graffiti on the walls and dumpsters in alleys you'd probably not go around wondering the alley. Maybe it was the rain or something but I didn't feel scared at all. It was relatively clean, no rats, no less fortunate person in the corner, no wanna be tough guys, and no funky smell. LOL it's Rapid City was there really anything to be scared of. This alley may even seem welcoming for people to visit and/or participate in leaving their own a work. There was this one guy painting while the rain was drizzling down. There's Bugs Bunny, Kermit the Frog, Minions from Despicable Me, words of inspiration, words of humor, and supposedly a glory hole, which I didn't go out searching for haha. A great place to catch local Rapid City artists to showcase their talents. I have a feeling you have to ask for permission before start doing your own work.

Yelp
Nice place - do wish there wasn't graffiti on top of much of the art though. Nice stroll down the block.

Yelp
During my trip to Rapid City, I spent my first couple of days in the northern, more suburban part of town. It was a fine place to relax and easy place to get to Mount Rushmore from, but it's a pretty sleepy place. It wasn't until my last day in town that I went downtown and went to Art Alley. Art Alley is a pretty cool place. It's free to see and when I went there weren't many people there. I don't know how many people it appeals to, but it's so interesting to see so many people coming together and making such a large work of art. It's very bright and colorful with tons of different objects being depicted. Even the dumpsters are painted. If I were to work downtown, I'd definitely walk through here often just to have an interesting view. And if you're in town I think it's worth it to have a look. Rapid City doesn't look like the most art friendly place, but apparently there are enough artists here to make a piece of art like this.

Yelp
This made my trip to Rapid City well worth it. I will add photos later, but imagine in the best artists and graffiti artists were allowed to paint on walls and alley items like trash cans, fire escapes, gas and electric meters and you could walk down and see their work for free? For an entire block you see words and paintings of welcome and protest. Reminders of MLK's speeches, desires for peace and love, reminders of the suffering that has happened in our country, line the entire alley, and you are free to take photos as much as you want. There are memorial pieces, cartoons, animation, graffiti, gorgeous!!! It made we wonder why we don't allow this to happen in areas of every city. It was powerful and meaningful. The human capacity to be creative constantly amazes and delights me. Bring your camera because something will grab your eye and you'll wish you could keep a shot of it.

Yelp
Unique alley with some decent art but overall I wouldn't say it's worth driving out of your way to see it

Yelp
Anyone from out of town or just visiting rapid city, this place to be added to everyone's day planner because this place is a good find. Trust me you would want to take lots of pictures of what i call it "innocent graffiti " this place ain't the ghetto no tags, no explicits, just cool art. Its a cool block to walkin too, strolling, looking at many artist that put in work here. You will see murals of some of looney toon characters, homer simpson, elmo, aliens, etc. lots of colors! Art alley is worth a visit, especially that your in the middle of buffalo country add this to your itinerary :)

Yelp
So I was in rapid city visiting and I thought it would cool to check out this art ally and I gotta it's pretty cool, I enjoyed walking down it & checking out all the cool Art that's painted on the side of walls. :)

Yelp
This is a neat concept, or use to be art by locals or visitors, but it seems lately people just tagging over the art making a mess. Although this is a living art project tagging or messing up a piece of art just to be a jerk just isnt cool. Give it a look there are some awesome pieces.
google avatar

Ken K.

Yelp
Art Alley is a great place to get many different looks into the minds of local artists and many want to be artists! We enjoy looking at all the different drawings, from amateur to some really nice drawings. This was a great idea and I even took my mother in law there when they visited. It is worth a look!
google avatar

Sandee W.

Yelp
This place used to be so cool with timeless art pieces of local artists but now I think it really needs to redone, Its cool to Stroll through but definately needs a overall because now its pretty scriblbled over top of and needs to start from scratch and let other people try their art skills.

Yelp
So much more than "just" a graffiti wall, Art Alley is a vibrant universe of color and art. Quotations, portraits, cartoons, canvases, and sculpture meld together in a sea of color. This must be what it feels like to step inside a painting.

Yelp
A really cool and random find. We were just wandering the streets taking it all in and saw this alley full of life and emotion on a quiet and dark evening. Its a must stop.
google avatar

Oliver D.

Yelp
Very cool artwork, excellent concept for city's alley way to add depth of art & culture to an otherwise blighted area between buildings. Ok for kids as long as you don't stand around long enough for them to start reading the various graffiti in the margins. There is quite a bit of standard "tagging" but the murals definitely shine out and impress.

Yelp
Free, cool, good grafitti. Someone seems to have written the entire Tao Te Ching in this alley. We also spotted Wakko and Dot.

Rachel A.

Yelp
Most cities have a graffiti street like this, but it was a refreshing find in a remote area like Rapid City! Again, just like all alleys or streets like this, it's an art-driven place, so you can come back over and over again & be happy to find new things each time. As time evolves, so does the art.

Sarah M.

Yelp
This is a cool place IF you catch it at the right time. I've been down there a few times and the first time it was just awesome! There was great artwork everywhere!! But everytime I've been down since then it has been mostly graffiti looking junk, and not art. :(
