The Wonders of Florida in 24 Museums

"The Maitland Art Center at the Art & History Museums of Maitland was created in 1937 as a winter artist’s retreat. The labyrinthine compound was designed in an obscure Art Deco architectural style known as Mayan Revival. The winding pathways, hidden courtyards, and high walls are all richly adorned with thousands of hand-carved concrete sculptures, ranging from serene saints to defiant warrior goddesses. The complex is the dream vision of artist and architect Jules André Smith, a reclusive creative who built the center in 1937 as a place where artists could dedicate themselves to experimental art forms. The studio operated until Smith passed away onsite in 1959. Today, artists still work in the historical studios. Visitors to the site can explore the grounds and visit the Maitland Art Center Gallery, which often has Smith’s artwork on display. If art isn’t your thing, the Telephone Museum is right next door, where visitors can play with antique switchboards and vintage rotary phones. Located in the heart of central Florida, the Art & History Museums of Maitland is a great stop for visitors who want to get to know the other side of Florida." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

My husband and I had a very small, intimate wedding in October. We were having trouble finding a venue that didn't look humongous with the small guest count -- until we found this place! We were beyond thrilled to find a venue as beautiful and unique as the spaces available at the Art & History Museums of Maitland. We chose to do the Morning Elopement in the Mayan Chapel, an exceptionally stunning space. Something we really appreciated was that, because the space is so beautiful on it's own, it really doesn't require much (if any) additional decor. We also opted to have a first look in the main garden and a private first dance in the courtyard right next to the chapel. All of our guests made sure to let us know that they loved the look of the venue and hadn't seen anything else like it. Our point of contact was Paola, who was so helpful and always so quick to answer any questions we had. The Art & History Museums of Maitland is a truly stunning venue, and we are so happy that we chose to have our intimate wedding here. We would absolutely recommend it to anyone planning a more intimate wedding.

We recently hosted The Future of Weddings: Insights from Vegas event at the Art & History Museum of Maitland, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish! The venue itself is absolutely stunning, offering a unique blend of charm. The layout of the space allowed us to create an engaging and comfortable atmosphere for our attendees. A special shoutout to Paola, who was incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout the entire process. Her attention to detail and willingness to ensure everything went smoothly made all the difference. If you're looking for a versatile, beautiful space with outstanding staff for your next event, the Art & History Museum of Maitland is a top-notch choice.

It‘s worth recommending everyone, full of artistic atmosphere. Retro-style building, one courtyard and one scene, quiet and peaceful. I heard that many people come here to take wedding photos. Although it is cloudy today and occasionally it rains a little, I still meet three couples to take wedding photos. The beautiful scenery is really a good place for people to linger.

I had my wedding ceremony at the Art and History Museum of Maitland and it was beyond my wildest dreams! They are a very affordable venue and the natural beauty meant I didn't need any decor since I was surrounded by nature and the details of the architecture the whole time. They are responsive and easy to work with and I can't begin to explain how stunning the chapel and Mayan courtyard are. Must see in person! SO glad I chose this as my venue for one of the most important days of my life! Highly recommend! Photo credit: Lemonhoneyco

Yelp
The Art and History Museums in Maitland are one of only forty-five National Landmarks in Florida. It was chosen as a National Landmark because it is one of the few surviving examples in the Southeast of an obscure Art Deco architectural style called Mayan Revival. I had the pleasure of visiting this cultural gem recently. Parking is free and admission to the museum complex was only $6. The Art Museum was built by American artist and architect Jules André Smith (1880-1959) who founded it as a winter artists colony in 1937 dedicated to experimental art. Smith studied stage design and architecture before turning to the arts. He served in the army during WWI and the Maitland Art Center is a culmination of his interests, travels and life experience. The home and gardens are built on a former orange grove and are modeled after the central courtyards and tributaries of Segovia, Spain. The artist colony was funded by philanthropist Mary Bok who also funded another treasured Central Florida landmark, Bok Tower Gardens. The studio operated until 1959 when Smith passed away on the grounds. Four of the original art studios are still intact and hosting artists today. We started off in the art museum which has a gallery that features a variety of local and regional artists, with rotating exhibits that highlight contemporary works as well as traditional art forms. During our visit the exhibit was A Bright Light from the Embers. This exhibit showcased the works of late artists Que Throm and Cicero Greathouse, who were a key part of the Central Florida arts community. On display was their art, letters, personal artifacts, and the recorded memories of those who knew them, all of which offered a window into their relationship and the love they shared. Next we went next door to the history museum which was founded in 1970 as the Maitland Historical Society. In 2010 they merged with the Maitland Arts Center. The museum collection of historical artifacts dates back to the late 19th century. The permanent exhibition is titled Maitland's Attic: A Journey Through A Small City's Past. Displays begin with the history of the First Peoples of Florida, followed by the start of the Art Center, the Florida Audubon Society, and ends in the 1970s in a room that would be familiar to anyone who grew up in that era. Directly behind the history museum is the Telephone Museum which was established in 1981. The A&H's Telephone Museum explores the technology of communications and the history of the telephone as you explore how communications have changed throughout time. You can learn about the history of the Winter Park Telephone Company which was founded in Maitland. The Telephone Museum has working antique phones and switchboards. My favorite part of the museum is the garden across the street with its winding pathways, hidden courtyards, and high walls adorned with murals and thousands of hand-carved concrete sculptures including saints and warrior goddesses. The gardens are a popular site for weddings and private events in the Main Garden, the Chapel, and the Mayan Courtyard. The Maitland Art and History Museums is a hidden gem. Whether you're an art enthusiast, a history buff, or just looking for something to do on an afternoon, this museum offers a rich and rewarding experience. Local residents as well as those just passing through will find this museum complex is definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
My mom and I were looking for a fun activity to do this weekend and chose to explore this museum. We had a lovely experience. The staff were welcoming and helpful. I got in for free with my student I.D. and admission was only $6 for my mom. We really enjoyed walking around the gorgeous building and absorbing all of the art. They have active studio spaces and offer classes and activities as well. I loved learning more about our local history, especially learning about Florida Black history and the importance of Eatonville, the Dommerich family and their impact on the area, and the citrus industry. We also enjoyed the telephone museum and seeing all of the relics of telephony. We enjoyed the gorgeous pond and beautiful stonework. We walked across the street to explore their wedding venue space, which is absolutely lovely. I highly recommend this place for art lovers and history enthusiasts! (Out of respect for the artists, I did not take any pictures of the art work and only of the museum faculties.)

Yelp
What an awesome cultural gem. The grounds are beautiful - the chapel, the courtyard, the artist studio gardens, wow. I learned so much by visiting and I didn't know this place was built in 1937 and it was originally a retreat for artists! They also have a history museum and a telephone museum. The History museum talked about the history of transportation in and around Maitland. The Telephone Museum is really cool and it's a must. Both the Art gallery and history exhibitions rotate but the Telephone museum is a permanent exhibit. If you're in Orlando, this place is a must.

Yelp
I visited the Maitland Art Center recently and I viewed the "Soldier's Home: Veterans' Art in Central Florida" art exhibit. The moving exhibit features local veterans artists: William Gura, Michael Moffett and Jim Hosner. The exhibit provides an opportunity to take a look at the impact of war on individuals. . Note: The exhibit has a graphic nature at the end since it deals with PTSD and veteran suicide. The person working at the museum warned me when I paid which was nice. The inside museum is small but the exhibits are done well. There is also the Mayan Revival courtyard outside which is beautiful. I explored the Research Studio for artists in residence too. This place is so charming and unique.

Yelp
I was reminded yesterday, in the most beautiful way possible, that things are often not what they seem, and it's always important to look beyond the surface. I had been invited to the opening of the Maitland Art & History Museum's Culture Pop! Veterans Art in Central Florida Exhibition, which had been curated by my friend and fellow NYU alumni Rangsook Yoon. Walking around the Art Exhibition rooms, I was admiring the diverse and amazing artwork, when I came across an installation art piece, which consisted of a bunch of used and damaged baseball bats hung up on the wall. ''Eh! Really? This can be called Art?" And I walked away, thinking it was among the most boring and senseless art installations I had seen. Later on in the evening, there was an opportunity whereby Rangsook interviewed the Exhibition Artists, and when she came to the Baseball installation piece, I was listening with half a ear, and had actually visually moved on to admire the next artwork piece. Then I heard the artist say, "There are 20 Veteran suicides in America everyday. I use these baseball bats to represent them." And just like that, I was surprised, flabbergasted and humbled in a instance. So please do come and visit this small and charming Museum, and you might too see or have an experience that challenges you or surprises you - Good Art will do that and we are lucky to have a Museum of such great quality, with a very affordable entry price, located right here in Orlando! PS - it's also a Purple Heart affiliate Museum, which means entry is free for Veterans. Would have been Yelp 145/ 2018, but I do not count updated reviews.

Yelp
For a Special Wedding Venue, The Art-History Museum is unmatched. While originally on the fence, due to the venue being outdoors and the uncertainty with Florida weather, the Actual wedding was amazing, with the perfect backdrop of the Chapel - Courtyard...highly recommended for ceremonies.

Yelp
Not the most exciting Museum I've ever been to. I went here for a pop culture event and there just wasn't much going on to keep my interest. I walked through the exhibit which was a very small exhibit with some strange wax sculptures that were not really my taste. The outdoor garden seems like a quant place where they probably host weddings and I'm sure it's a great venue, just lacks museum interest and isn't a museum I would frequent.

Yelp
What a cool way to spend a Friday night! I invited a friend along to the first event for the fall in the Culture Pop! (formerly Culture & Cocktail) series which is held on the 2nd Friday of the month from 7p-11p. It sounded like a cool little outing plus I was able to snag a great deal on Living Social for 3 events in the series for 2 people. Both of us had never been to these museums and didn't realize what a treat we'd be in for. Once we checked in, we were each outfitted with a bracelet and a drink ticket and encouraged to explore the grounds. I wish I took down the names of the actual venues but here goes... The first one we checked out was the outdoor venue made of stone that was absolutely gorgeous. We kept commenting on how gorgeous it would be to have a wedding there. There was a DJ in this venue and a little seating area to schmooze. They also had people reciting poetry every so often. Next Stop- Clotheslines with Art on display for purchase. I liked how open the area was and that people were free to mingle and schmooze while checking out the work of local artists. And there was also a cool funky band playing in the background so, overall, it was a neat vibe. There was a mix of older and younger folks so I could see this being a good way to meet new people (ahemmm-note to my single friends)! We also made a point to check out the actual art gallery and the work that was on display. The gift shop is in the lobby/reception area. I didn't get a chance to take a look but the area is quite small so it can get cramped. We took some time to browse the art in the gallery. Some very detailed and intricate pieces. Again, I regret not jotting down the name of the artist whose work is on the walls. Definitely worth the time if you're in the area and looking for some time to kill. My favorite part of the event was the Community Art Project area where we were encouraged to draw on the walls of the building . The volunteers(who were fabulous and oh so friendly) provided the paints and brushes and we just had to let our imagination flow! It was very freeing but at the same time you couldn't help but be intimidated especially when we saw REAL artists painting on the walls beside us! The museum wanted to send the old interior off in style before renovations are done hence this project. While we here, we found out that they are always looking for volunteers and even host art classes if that is something you are interested in. As a whole, I was very impressed by the museums and would love to check it out again in the daytime. It's tucked away on Packwood close to the lake so after a visit you can take a stroll near the lake. Perfect day date!

Yelp
I recently attended a wedding at the Mayan Chapel. In all my travels, I must say that this is a beautiful wedding site! The artistry of the chapel gives a historic "temple" feel. Gorgeous flowers and a number of curious lizards completed the ambiance. Seating in the chapel is extremely limited but the connected reception space is much bigger. I wandered into one of the connected buildings (a back up just in case the weather didn't cooperate) and it was nice and cool with A/C. There is also a rather large green space to walk around or take pictures. I also walked down the street a bit near the water. Overall, even if not for the wedding, I would have liked to explore the facilities and the area around a bit more.

Yelp
This is a complex of about three small museums and three small gardens/parks. Admission to each is $3, although you can buy a 'pass' for all three (gardens included) for $9. There is no multipass-style discount. The value proposition for each of the museums varies, but if you visit all three museums and the gardens, it is worth the combined admission. 1. The Historical and Telephone Museum is, I feel, one of the more extensive exhibitions with a good number of artifacts and educational materials packed into a very small museum. Ironically, most of the reviews don't mention it in favor of the art spaces. However, it's definitely worth a visit. I wrote a more complete review of this specific museum in it's own entry. Although shout-out to our tourguide Rachel, who was great. 2. The Art Center is attractively designed with well-designed exhibits. I will say it's only three small gallery rooms, with a handful (or one) piece per room, so it's the most 'single-bite' of the venues. 3. The Waterhouse Residence Museum is a beautifully preserved 19th century Victorian residence that provides a glimpse back in time to the life of an 19th Century Upper-Middle Class family. Waterhouse himself was a carpenter and built the house, which is one of the best preserved examples in the region. Our tourguide was likewise informative. There's also a carpentry exhibit on the Waterhouse Residence property. They count this as it's own museum, but it's literally a carpentry shed with a replica of a period-appropriate workshop within. Also, you can't go in but look through the window. It's worth a look after your residence tour. The Waterstone Residence is a bit separated from the other museums in the complex, but you can walk, of if you want to move your car, there is ample parking around the park that encloses it. 4. The other two garden areas are enclosed courtyard like spaces. One is a lawn surrounded by artist in residence studios. The other is a chapel complex. Both were designed in a Mayan art-influenced Art Deco style called 'Fantasy Architecture'. The chapel in particular is a combination of Christian iconography and Mayan-style art and creates an effect so evocative of an abandoned ancient temple that I half expected Indiana Jones to leap out and warn me to watch my step so as not to set-off some deadly trap. Overall, a worthwhile experience and recommended.

Yelp
What a beautiful place this is -- I'm sorry that I've lived here for so long without visiting. The architecture of the center is unique in the real sense of the word. The gallery art is limited, but quite nice. They are currently featuring works from the founder, Andre Smith. (Word has it that he haunts the halls at times. The gallery floors were creaking but I think it was I, not Andy.) But the real attraction is the place itself, especially the outdoor church across the street, with beautiful and imaginative stonework. I was there for nearly an hour, and not another soul was there the whole time; it was very peaceful and I got some great photos.

Yelp
What a hidden gem...The grounds of this museum are beautiful. Great spot to get married. The historic Aztec and Mayan theme carved outdoor chapel is so pretty. If you go make sure you tour that area.
google avatar

Debbie U.

Yelp
Don't take art "classes" here as classroom instruction just does not exist. "Teachers" modify your art for their eyes, do not provide any instruction, and clean out the studio periodically, discarding a students art without prior notification....so beware if you leave it in the studio any period of time. Art classes here are a social gathering at best and place for those who are bored and want "creative interaction" only.
google avatar

Pam H.

Yelp
Keep an eye on this place, they get some great exhibits! Hidden over on Lake Sybella in Maitland, this multi-building compound houses many artists and events throughout the year. While the actual museum is small, it packs a punch, rotating one amazing show after another. On my last visit I was able to check out the photography of Clyde Butcher, and in the past they have hosted borrowed works from the Dali Museum in St. Pete. They also host a monthly event, Culture Pop!, where different artists and musicians show off their talents. It's basically an open house with cocktails and fun music. Highly recommend. Even just walking the grounds makes for a nice afternoon, so plan to come out when the weather is nice and bring a camera. This is a side of Florida you do not see too often, so it's worth checking out.

Rhea P.

Yelp
Had no idea any of this existed until the culture club. Glad I took the time to drop by and have a look. The gallery was actually displaying a collection of local artists. Although a small collection, I have to say there were some really intriguing pieces! I especially liked the pelvis collage and the mesh relief. . . It was really nice to view such original and different pieces in such an intimate setting. Jewelery, cards, magnets, and other gift items are available int he shop as well.

Yelp
Awesome little art gallery with some cool live in studios they rent out to artists. Across from the gallery they have an oldschool celtic style out door church with amazing statues and stonework. The entire garden/church is enclosed by stone walls and the walk ways are brick with passages and quotes carved in. A great secret for the city of Jamlando.

Yelp
I will update as the week goes by, but the staff was friendly and they seemed organized. The one item which was annoying was the lack of signs for parking and drop off. One little sign which was placed inefficiently. I think some donations will be in order to allow them some extra signs for their location and drop off spot.

Yelp
The Art and History Museums of Maitland is a wonderful and whimsical location nonparallel to any location in the Central Florida area. Just visiting the location inspired me to want to get married there. The rental manager, Lauren, was extremely pleasant and helpful when making plans. The rental rates were excellent! I can't wait to spend my special day there and to visit often!

Yelp
If there were 6 star options I'd give it these guys! This review is waaaay overdue but here goes! We had our wedding here on April 7- beautiful weather thank goodness. Lauren and company bent over backwards accommodating us in every way. They cleaned the entire space, were always available to answer questions, and were just so nice the entire process. For the price you cannot beat the beauty of this location/and attention you receive from Lauren etc. We had 4 Rivers cater the event and had an open bar company that Lauren had suggested. What a fabulous- day- our ceremony was in the garden then we moved next door to the mayan courtyard space for a bit of dancing. Closing time here is a bit early I suppose at 10:30- but we started at 3 so it was a nice long day full of wonderful memories. Thank you Lauren for such a wonderful experience. We really had a blast! Yelp
It's beautiful. Wander freely around this former art commune from the 1920's/30's and you'll find amazing Mayan and Christian influenced carvings, a fountain, two museums and they still have an Artist in Residence! You won't be dissapointed.

Yelp
I had a wedding here. A great location for an outdoor wedding. The wedding and cocktail hour was at the location. Both sides of the Arts Center outdoors were used and the pictures came out great. The staff was great to work with.

Yelp
My husband and I just got married at Maitland's Mayan Chapel a couple weeks ago. This venue is as gorgeous and unique as it gets! Our pictures turned out amazing, our guests loved the ambiance and Brittany and the rest of the staff were wonderful! Best of all-this just so happened to be the most affordable place we considered for our wedding. Getting married at Maitland was definitely worth the trip all the way from Virginia!!!

Yelp
The Maitland Art Center is a beautiful place. It's so quiet and peaceful. It had many great art pieces and amazing architecture. It is a great place to relax and learn about some great artists.

Yelp
My son spent several weeks here for their summer camp. We were both excited for him to start and although he enjoyed it I was hoping for a little more. This would have been the perfect chance for him to experience some advanced instruction but it felt like most of what they did was what they do every week at public school. I did like that the camp brought in live musicians to play for the kids and walked them to the local fire station and library. They also walked them to nearby Lake Lilly. The grounds are small but stunning. There are lots of cool niches and a canopy of shade over the gardens. It is such a peaceful area in the midst of bustling downtown Maitland. We even joined as members hoping to take advantage of some of their classes but I was discouraged by the high cost, even for members. I'm still glad this place exists but just wished they could offer a bit more for families or children. The museum is small but quaint with some hands on displays. I think everyone should check this place out at least once.

Yelp
The Maitland Art Center and Museum is a beautiful venue, you can buy some of the artist wares in the Gift Shop. Beautiful Art Gallery and they host some top notch art events. I attended an event with artist Andrew Spears.

Yelp
Cute little museum. Not the biggest one, but still an interesting one. Had an interesting exhibit on horses that I very much enjoyed. Also Florida Opera theater had a great Production here in one of their halls that was fantastic. A great venue for almost anything you want to see. Very pretty garden courtyard inside as well.

Yelp
I was contacted by Gretchen from the Maitland Art & History Museums more than a year after my wedding (as evidenced below my original review). She also sent me a private message directly and tried to bribe me to take the review down in exchange for membership to the Maitland Art & History Museums and Bok Tower. I told her that I would not take my previous review down because it is an accurate telling of my experiences, but that if they would refund the rental amount I would update my review to state that they have since refunded my rental fee and have stated that they have made changes at the wedding chapel. (We have since moved out of the state and I cannot verify if any changes have been made.) I still believe that the entire rental fee should have been refunded after everything went so wrong on what should have been a very special day. However, once again the ball was dropped and I never even received a follow up response from Gretchen. If refunding the rental fee was not an option a response would have been appreciated and courteous. As far as I am concerned this is ANOTHER failure by the Maitland Art & History Museum. Being offered a bribe to take down my review was insulting, and the lack of response when I tried to offer what I believe is fair under the circumstances is unprofessional.

Yelp
My daughter was having a small intimate wedding and wanted a different sort of venue. We rented the Mayan Chapel and the adjoining area for the reception and had absolutely no problems-bride's room open and clean, leaves blown away, everything ready to go. Every attendee loved this venue-just enchanted by the surroundings and the carvings, the natural beauty of the trees hung with moss, and the elegant but informal feeling. They all said it was the most gorgeous setting for a wedding they had ever seen. There was a sign outside the venue on the day notifying others that it was rented for a private event, but I don't know if that was my caterer's doing or the Art center's. All I know it could not have gone better, the setting is unbelievable, and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is having a small affair.

Natalie L.

Yelp
I've loved this place ever since I was a kid. When my fiancé and I were looking for a wedding venue, it was definitely at the top of my list. We ended up getting married in the Mayan Chapel, and it couldn't have been more perfect. The venue rep, Brittany was super accommodating and was always available to answer any questions we had. If you're looking for an intimate setting for an event such as a wedding - definitely check this place out!

Robert L.

Yelp
Place was neat, and the art was very different. Other places had a little bit more items to enjoy so you're there longer then 30-45mins but still a fun little place to check out.
