Art Sanctuary Allan West (Allan West's studio and gallery)

This is the place if you want to buy some Japanese artwork as a souvenir. Allan (The artist) has a great personality! He will answer all your questions about his artworks. I can recommend a visit!

Super interesting dude - beautiful art and atmospheric, traditional working studio space. He clearly has a real passion for the culture and history of Japan. He obviously speaks fluent English as well as Japanese and I found it brilliant being able to ask him questions about everything related to art and this amazing country.

If you love art and nature please go and visit the studio of Nihonga painter Allan West. During my autumn holiday i visited the studio twice to be enveloped in beauty and a warm welcome, even though I wasn’t able to buy any artwork. I did buy Allan’s recently published book “They hang me in Tokyo”. It’s for sale in Allan’s studio and online. Reading the book beforehand adds an extra dimension to one’s walk towards the studio in this spiritual part of Yanaka neighbourhood. Mr Allan West's work is always a delight to see every time I visit his studio. His deep insight and love for Japanese painting is amazing, and this studio itself is a old repair shop which he renovated by himself. Strolling around the neighborhood of Yanaka is very enjoyable too.

Insight into Allan West art and workshop. And very friendly that is! One can see amazing body of work but mainly converse with artist himself. There is some artwork for sale too, if you are interested.

This gallery really is a gem. Not too hard to find and definitely worth it. No pressure to buy, but so much to see and love in this small and beautiful gallery. The America-born artist and his wife speak great English and are happy to answer the many questions you will have. The gallery is featured in an episode of Tokyo Eye 2020 which can be accessed on the NHK tv website. Closed Thursdays I think.

Great little hidden gem and Allen is very accomodating. He has some great works on display - unfortunately we arrived just after he had finished work for the day but he let us in anyway to see the art work and video.

Met Allan at his own studio. What a beautiful space and such an inspiration. Highly recommend this place :)
