15 Best Coffee Shops in Sydney | Condé Nast Traveler

"Regulars and passerby get their coffee fix at Artificer, which attracts a loyal crowd of enthusiasts. Surry Hills is full of media, hospitality, and fashion types hooked on this next-level caffeine. Artificer takes its beans seriously: co-founders Dan Yee and Shoji Sasa focus on seasonal blends from Colombia, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Kenya. Options include espresso, filter, and cold brew. You can also buy sleek black bags of house coffee to take home, plus tactile ceramic cups." - Sophie Davies

Staff is friendly with delighted smile. The environment and atmosphere is cozy and chill. The washed Columbian double espresso and Brazilian batch brew nicely matched the tasting note on the bean package. Recommended for coffee hunt if you are interested in single origin black coffee.

I really enjoyed my last coffee in Sydney – it was delicious! But I think the barista still needs some practice with latte art. The one I got was a bit of a fail, while another customer got a perfect one… Same price, but feels a bit unfair!

I love the coffee here. It is always delicious, whether it's a batch brew, long hotel or espresso. A simple, small venue and favourite neighbourhood hangout.

In my opinion, Artificer Coffee serves the best specialty coffee in Sydney. They love what they do and they are killing it! The black coffees are my favourite. Single Origin options are always great. Friendly and knowledgeable baristas. Retail section is great for making coffee at home or as a gift. Simply that one cafe serves beautiful coffee and good vibe in the morning. ☀️

This is my first visit to this cafe. A friend recommend this cafe as they have a really high quality blend. I am very picky when it comes to coffee that I rarely go to any cafe randomly as the coffee culture in my hometown is quite strong and my own benchmark is high. I can definitely say that they serve a really nice coffee with aromatic flavors. The shot might no be that strong but perfectly blended very well. To be clear, I order Latte. Highly recommend this for those who look for high quality coffees.

Google
Easily one of the best coffee spots in Sydney. The team knows exactly what they’re doing — no frills, just really high-quality coffee made with care. Every time I come in, I know I’m getting a great cup. It’s a small and cozy space but always has a good energy. A place run by people who really love coffee!

Best cafe in Sydney. You can experience the most delicious latte! But it closes too early!!! If you want to taste the coffee here, you have to hurry!

Google
The coffee itself at Artificer was solid — well-balanced and clearly crafted with care. However, the overall experience left a lot to be desired. When we asked about filter coffee options at the counter, the staff defaulted to batch brew without mentioning that they also offer pour-over. We only realised they had pour-over available after we left, which was disappointing as we would’ve preferred that if given the option. On top of that, the service felt a bit inconsistent. As we left, we noticed staff saying goodbye to other customers — but not to us. It came off as selective and slightly unwelcoming, which unfortunately coloured the experience. In short, great coffee but the customer service didn’t match the quality of the brew. Would love to see a bit more attentiveness and warmth to elevate the overall vibe.

Yelp
Now, I should point out that when they describe themselves as being a specialty coffee shop, it basically means that they only do coffee. Well, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you happen to drink coffee (which I don't). Still, I decided to forgo my reservations and at least have one, and it wasn't too bad. However, this place does happen to be pretty small, and there really isn't much in the way of places to sit down. It is probably more a place for takeaway, so remember your keep cup.

Yelp
Artificer Coffee have achieved a high level of service with this cute little cafe. I'll get to the coffee in a bit however, the whole experience should be a very pleasant one for most people. The shop is situated on a corner next to a bike track on Bourke Street, Surry Hills, and it takes 15 minutes to walk here from Central station. It creates an interesting ambiance to it with its somewhat quirky yet friendly staff, minimalistic design and layout with a very strong theme of American oak being used thoroughly throughout the cafe. Because Articifer is in Surry Hills, the staff and the other customers can seem a bit strange but I can work with that. There a various stools and couches but they may be limited due to how popular the place is, so I just got a takeaway small cappuccino with no sugar $4. I would definitely come back later and try some of their other coffees but for now I ordered a small cappuccino. It was gorgeous. Texture wise it was very velvety, smooth and slick. The disintegration between the foam, steamed milk and espresso was on point. In terms of flavour, the cappuccino had high notes with a nice honey ring to it. The temperature was great as well. A high quality coffee. I would highly recommend going out of your way to try out Artificer as it an amazing experience and service.

Yelp
Ambience here was cool and minimalistic but cant give a good assessment of their espresso because the barista was a little too grumpy to help me out. When I asked about the different espresso origins he had he merely listed them and said "we are an artisan espresso bar" when I wanted to order my espresso with milk... so I just got a pour over which was pretty good and was on my way. A big factor for me in coffee shops is passionate baristas who enjoy educating you on their selections and never make you feel out of place for asking more questions, as I didn't get even an inkling of enthusiasm from my guy here I can't give them more than a 2 star rating, he seemed nice enough to the local people but I was taken aback by his rudeness towards me. Apart from his lackadaisical personality, the place did have a nice vibe so hats off to whoever put it together!

Yelp
If you're a coffee snob or a coffee noob, you will dig this place. Don't be intimidated by the two former baristas of the year, they are extremely chill and approachable and will answer any questions you have. Artificer only serves coffee. That's it. Come here for coffee, don't expect any kind of food...not even a pastry. They do espresso, manual brew, and cold brew and whatever brews you can think of. I ordered a flat white and a manual brew. The manual brew is meticulously done in front of you and timed, and by default they use Kenyan beans. You can ask for different beans if you like, such as Bolivian but that is entirely up to you. My flat white was consistent, velvety and delicious. Went down smooth. My manual brew had no bitterness, slightly tart and made me wired like a mug. Delicious. Great place for a cup of coffee and to have a chat with a friend.

Yelp
It is hard to fault the passion or skill of two former baristas of the year, both with years of roasting experience, who are looking to make their mark on the Sydney coffee scene. While still very early in the piece, the flavours and balance these guys are getting from their coffee is unique and enjoyable. Certainly a cafe worth trying out if you are in the area, however if you can't get here to try their coffee, head over to Salvage in Artarmon as they are now also serving Artificer coffee. Yelp
Ranked so highly on its excellent coffee. This is a store selling coffee only. When you only sell coffee, it's gotta be pretty bloody good. And good it is. Clean, minimalist furniture and benches outside. Lovely Lovely man at the counter and he offered to bring the coffee to my table outside. It was a superb tasting coffee (I only had one sugar and I normally have two heaped teaspoons!). Beautiful latte art. They don't serve food, which, again - you go here for the coffee.

Yelp
Don't know what else I can say about this place other than it's awesome! Seriously, if you are a coffee lover you can't give this a miss. The coffee is amazing, robust and different (in a seriously good way)! The guys here know their stuff and are willing to sit and have a chat with you all about it. Saying this place is all about the coffee - in other words this isn't a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat. This is just coffee. And thank God for that! Because they do it brilliantly. There is minimum seating but when people are just coming in for coffee it empties out quite quickly. Make sure you try this place... No coffee lover can call themselves that unless they come here.

Yelp
Near perfect espressos matched with tasteful decor, Artificer is certainly an espresso bar out of context. While others rely on pastries and huge servings - appealing to our most basic urges, the emphasis is on appreciation of something we generally take for granted in our daily routine. While some may find it leaning to the 'hipster' side those who can look past the glossy exterior will find people who genuinely love their craft. Half concept, half business. Good mix.

Yelp
Visited Articifer for the second time yesterday after my son introduced me to this coffee. As the former owner of several high rating cafe's, and a full on barista, Artificer is up with the best internationally. If you are into full bodied consistently good coffee to what I would rate some of the best Baristas even from an international perspective you can not miss this place....Ivan S

Yelp
This new kid on the block fits in perfectly with the leafy neighbourhood vibe of Bourke Street. Minimal and casual without trying too hard. And of course, coffee is extremely ace.

Yelp
Artificer is a very stylish and cool (read "hipster") place. In a good way! The minimalistic design of the interior goes very well with the easy-going baristas and the tasty coffee. This place really knows coffee!

Yelp
My current fave. These guys do amazing coffee. Have yet to get a bad cuppa!! So far, I've had a number of different coffees (both hot and cold) and they've all been fantastic. So not only are you getting skillfully made coffee from a fantastic roaster, but it's CONSISTENT. That's probably got to be my number one gripe with most places these days - the inconsistency. From here, you are guaranteed amazing coffee every single time.

Yelp
Incredible coffee, amazing interiors and great service. Also love the take-home coffee beans and the seasonal selection they offer.
