My concierge suggested this place when I asked where could I hold a small business lunch near by. When I arrived, it was 1:30PM. The place looked closed. I just assumed they opened for 2 or maybe even later, as is the Portuguese way, and began to peruse their menu on the door when it opened. It was the owner. He said if I didn't mind waiting a bit for the food that he could seat me and give me wine right away. I couldn't argue with that. It was 90*F outside anyways. However, I did think to myself all restaurants in Portugal should state that exact thing on the door. Once I was in, I doubled the restaurants occupancy. The owner was speaking with a man near the back after he sat me in a comfortable side table. The waiter was actually quick, polite, and responsive, but knew little English. Few people in Portugal have great English. Portuguese is a beautiful language - I suggest you brush up a bit before visiting. It helped me out greatly. OK, it helped me out some. My Portuguese is terrible. Some speak Spanish, so that helped a bit. Because, as an American, I know a LOT of Spanish words for food and drink. Anyways, I had about 4 courses over the course of an hour and a half between me and a realtor. We had too much wine, langostinos, rice, beans, shrimp, a bunch of stuff I forget how to spell or pronounce that was likely raw beef maybe and some crab-like thing, mushrooms, etc etc. Some of the best food I have had in Portugal. Two bottles of house wine, loads of seafood we couldn't finish, and a few small sides set me back €50 for two people! Thank you, Restaurante As Velhas.
