This is a must when in Valparaiso. Although it is quite easy to get to the top of Cerro Alegre, the Ascensor Peral (Funicular) is almost a right of passage when visiting for the first time. El Peral, one of the 16 "elevators" in the port town, connects the city below (in particular the "Plaza de Justicia" - where the monument of the naval warriors is located) to one of the most beautiful hills in Valparaiso (in my opinion).
Opened to the public in 1901, what makes El Peral so important, is that it was the first steam powered "elevator" in all of Valparaiso (fun fact: because of this, it was also declared a national monument in all of Chile in 1998!)
From the Plaza de Justicia, you arrive to the Paseo Yugoslavo (the main place to celebrate during the Valpo famous New Years), where you will have a breathtaking view of the colorful port town as well as direct access to the art museum, Palacio Baburriza.
The best part is that it only costs 100 pesos to go up!
This is especially useful if you are with young children or can't make the trip up for any reason.
