The 4 Best Hostels in Cape Town (Updated 2025)

"Tucked away in the leafy suburb of Gardens, this quieter, small hostel still makes it easy to meet other travelers while offering a more peaceful stay; it has an outdoor pool, a shared kitchen, and an on-site café that opens for breakfast and reopens as a bar at night. I appreciated the thick mattresses, plenty of plugs and USB ports, and modern bathrooms with really nice high-pressure showers, which are a big plus in my book." - Matthew Kepnes

The place's got marvelous services. There is upstairs, a self-service kitchen fully furnished and all you do is to buy own groceries, you cook, well you'll be good to feed you stomach. The place has a great view of table mountain while you resting by the swimming pool side. Perfect balcony to relax and catch fresh air with excellent view of cape town.

Great place great location no problems up until we had to check out and my 3 rings were gone that i left on the rooms zinc... They claimed they never saw it but it was gone and only they had access to the room very disappointing cuz the place looks amaizing but that is straight up theft and even tho it doesnt have value of millions it had sentimental value to me but location and place great..

It's a bit far from the waterfront and not that many cafes and restaurants nearby but I was impressed by the security. The staff seemed inexperienced (were they new ?). All I got was a quick cursory introduction of the room and left to it. The single room was just acceptable for one night. Shared shower and toilet down the hall was clean. In the end I suppose it reflected its price.

I had a lovely stay here. The Ashanti Lodge is very scenic and colorful with great views! The room was clean and comfortable and I felt I had everything I needed. For a backpackers accommodation it is of a very nice and clean standard like a hotel room (I had my own room). It was also very cheap and great value for money. Staff were also friendly and helpful. Would stay here again.

I am checking in and they are unable to clarify my room rate, date of booking, pre-paid amount, staff generally seems clueless. One hour after paying the balance I m still in reception trying to clarify things instead of visiting Cape Town. The staff is not very patient and leave off on other errands without finishing off a conversation they started. They don't seem to like working here and want to get through the day without stress.

If you want to stay in a home away from home where community lives and a spirit of kindness then look no further. I stated in the double bed room nice and spacious with basin and bathroom and shower was communal. The place has aged considering I stayed here in 2016 yet it still clean and managed well and it's rooms don't exactly look like the picture yet all smooth. The bathrooms were excellent that's always a first priority. Naz was my shining star always ready to help and of service especially on weekends when there is no reception. All the staff were kind friendly and helpful, place was kept clean. I was gonna give this place a 5 star yet I found it interesting that one morning I had misplaced my bank card. I wanted a R50 breakfast and told the gentleman who makes breakfast that I would pay when I comeback from the ATM, he didn't even have other options and asked if I was staying an extra night (which I wasn't at that moment (ended up staying an extra night) he's case was because of so many other guests he needs immediate payment because he has huge bills of unpaid breakfasts. I found this disappointing and understandable. Otherwise wise choice situated within walking distance of everything. Made new family and friends Always a great choice.
