24 Mesmerizing Mazes and Labyrinths

"Though the Ashcombe maze bears the look of a Victorian era hedge maze, and is, in fact, the “oldest” traditional hedge maze in Australia it dates back only to the 1970s. However, in the last 30 some years, Ashcombe has continued to grow and now is the largest hedge maze in Australia and outsizes the size of traditional hedge mazes were by quite a bit. With rounded fluffy edges, (clipped back three times a year to keep them nicely sculpted) the nine foot high and six foot wide “Cupresses Macrocarpa” hedges take up a good portion of the over 25 acres Ashcombe occupies. Among the other sights at Ashcombe are a “Lavender Labyrinth” with over 3000 lavender plants, a circular rose maze with 200 varieties of roses and over 1200 rose bushes. A popular event in the maze is the Great Gnome Hunt, where adults and children alike run around finding and writing down the names of every garden gnome they can find." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Painter’s Dream From the moment you step onto the grounds, the air is filled with the soothscent of lavender, if you like lavender of course. Soft, floral, and calming. The gardens are a painter’s dream, endless rows of vibrant purple stretch toward the horizon. No matter the season, there’s always something in bloom, with European, French, and native lavender varieties creating a sensory tapestry that enchants all who visit. But Ashcombe is more than its famed lavender. The Hedge Maze—Australia’s oldest and most famous whimsical touch to your lavender experience. Highly recommend

This place is absolutely amazing! My son, who has profound autism, really loves it here. Every time we visit, he wants to stay for hours because he enjoys the beautiful play areas and mazes so much. My daughter also loves it, especially the fairy hunt—kids get a little prize for finding all the hidden fairies in the gardens, which is super fun. The staff is really friendly too, and they even offer free tea and coffee at the café. It’s definitely one of our staple places to go, especially when the weather is nice!

I had an absolutely great afternoon over here. The maze was fun to move and get out of it. The play area was clean and big. The best part was lavender garden which was in full bloom. They have free coffee for all visitors and nice open seating to enjoy. Must visit place

Google
'Absolutely Fabulous' greed by a lovely man who gave us all the info and was very welcoming his positive energy was radiating. The gardens and maze were very exciting and fun with lots of exploring. A little fairy and gnome hunt for the kids but adults were keen too. Amazing take home lavender and enjoy a complimentary coffee overlooking the beauty of the gardens. I'd say the south maze needs some TLC and upkeep but all in all , recommend.

Went with few friends and family. A must visit especially if you have kids. Loved superhero hunting with the kids. Absolutely brilliant lush nature, amazing maze and the lavender garden is beautiful too. The gentleman and the lady at the reception were brilliant and welcoming. Small cafe for a quick rest , toilets were very clean too. Keep up the great work guys 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

A great way to spend a few hours. We had so much fun as a family exploring the maze, wandering the beautiful grounds, playing on the giant playground (while mum and dad had a coffee) and feeding the ducks in the pond. The perfect screen free activity.

Yelp
The Ashcombe Maze and Lavender Garden, which is a great place if you like the idea of a maze. The main hedge maze itself is fun to walk in, find the mosaic titles and figure your way out. There's a big land of the centre garden which features a small waterfall is very quaint and fairy tale like. The big land of Lower Woodlands of plenty of walking space and trees makes this part of the garden quite nice to walk along. Perhaps, I came at the wrong time of the year, because the nature wasn't at it's best when I visited this place yesterday. I am concerned about the edgy steel poles in the mazes, which I think poses a potential danger for kids. All it takes is for a kid to run around into the maze without caution and they can easily hit their head against this edgy pole. Mind you, there was more than one of these. There's also a Lavender Labyrinth, which sounds like something from a fairytale story but in reality, is untidy, small and not that exciting really. If lavender is your thing, you'll be better on visiting a proper Lavender farm. The tiny rose maze garden is nothing to be excited about, as it's plain and ordinary. The rose garden at Werribee Mansion is significantly better. Picnics aren't allowed at this place, but there is a cafe you can sit down to eat pies, ice-cream etc. Overall, the the place was quite disappointing particularly the maze, rose maze and Lavender Labyrinth. I wouldn't recommend this place for kids because of th hazardous spots. The prices follows. Adults $18.50 Children (4-15years) $10.00 Senior Card and Health Care Card Holders $16.50 Family 1 (2 Adults & 2 Children) $52.00 Family 2 (2 Adults & 3 Children) $60.00 Family 3 (2 Adults & 4 Children) $66.00 Children 0-3 years are free Perhaps, this place is nice in terms of mazes in Victoria and depending on the time of the year, can look beautiful in photos. I wouldn't recommend this place, unless they fix a few things to make the admission fee worth paying for. I think it's better to go the Royal Botancial Gardens is beautiful all year round and free of charge. Plus you can have a picnic too.

Yelp
ASHECOMBE MAZE CAFE The cafe is located at the start of the gardens. You could see the maze from the cafe. The service was great, orders were taken quickly and food came not long after, even when it was around three-quarters full. We had the lasagna as it was the special of the day. It came with a side salad. The lasagna was a huge slice and very filling. It has huge amount of minced meat in it. We also ordered the Chicken Parma that came with chips and a side salad. The chicken was very crispy with good amount of cheese and tomato puree. It was better than those you get from Disney resort quick service but cost slightly more compared with Disney. Overall a nice place to dine after a walk in the garden or hungrily having stuck inside the maze for hours or days.

Yelp
My friend and I spontaneously drove out here to take full advantage of the unexpectedly lovely weather yesterday. Besides being an absolutely beautiful area and giving us the opportunity to take some great pictures we had a blast. The hedge maze is the hardest and the most enjoyable but that doesn't mean the other mazes aren't challenging. I must admit we took some sick joy out of sitting in the centre of the rose maze watching others struggle to get to us! It's the small things in life! We only spent a few hours here and for $18.50 I kind of expected more, but I imagine with a family and kids you could make it a whole day out, otherwise there's plenty more to see and do in the area.

Yelp
Ashcombe maze is a beautiful, quaint and secluded garden hidden away in the far outskirts of Melbourne. This place offers a beautiful lavender garden, a rose maze, a hedge maze and many other lovely gardens. This is a great place to soak up some nature and enjoy a peaceful and aimless walk. Great for couples and families. Ashcombe is beautiful any time of the year, there's always something in bloom somewhere in the gardens. The hedge maze was lots of fun, it's not too big that you would be lost for hours-but it does take a good 15minuets to wonder through. Probably not great if you suffer from claustrophobia as the walkways can get very narrow. Ashcombe maze also have a delightful little café onsite that sell light and tasty items such as dips, sandwiches and scones. Entry is $17.50 for adults and $49 for families (2 adults 2 children). Be sure to check out the gift shop as your leaving, they sell a range of lavender items you wouldn't find elsewhere.

Yelp
every run through the corn mazes like some sort of thriller victim? well there are much more sophisticated alternatives legit hedge mazes! this place would be fantastic in the lavender season...unfortunately i was there in the summer so i only got to saw the dried twiggy remains otherwise the...the hedge maze is fun...DON'T CHEAT! afterwards, you can *wander* through their various gardens *bonus* they give a "gift" if you can find the names of the garden gnomes hidden around the premises // there's a restaurant that serves breakfast/cafe style food there as well ~*~ it's more for the gardens than anything else~
