Where to See the Best Wisteria Blooms in Japan This Spring

"Ashikaga Flower Park is the only location in Japan with a Kibana wisteria tunnel visitors can walk underneath. It's home to more than 350 different wisteria trees — including a celebrated Great Wisteria over 150 years old — that bloom in colors ranging from violet to pinks, purple, white, and bright yellow. The park also has more than 5,000 azalea bushes that can be admired around the same time." - Travel + Leisure Editors

It is located in Tochigi prefecture, and it is 5 minutes away from the Ashikaga Flower Park station. This flower park is one of the best illuminations in Japan, a must-visit during the winter season (November to February) and the wisteria season (Mid April to Mid May). The entrance fee depends on the season, so please check the website for additional infos. Aside from the magnificent light-ups, there's also restaurants and food stalls around the place. As well as, souvenir shops that sells exclusive products. I highly recommend this place to couples, friends, and families.

Going to the park from Fujioka, Gunma via the expressway is pretty straightforward. However, the turn right before the park has quite the heavy traffic, probably because of the volume of people visiting the park. I visited around 6pm, and I waited at least 10 more minutes at the stop light before the park, which is honestly not that bad. Seeing the illuminated park was so worth the wait ✨ The crowd were all orderly and respectful, and the restaurants, shops, and toilets were all strategically placed to ease the tour.

We visited the park for wisteria, and we got to see so much more. The trip from Tokyo was pretty long we stayed from afternoon until night time to make the trip worth. The weather on that day was nice and the park is not crowded at all, we got to take so many photos and just spend time walking around and take in the beautiful flowers. As the sun sets, the whole vibe starts to change and it is still beautiful and the spotlights made the flowers more vibrant looking when the sky fully became dark. It is definitely worth staying back as the night time is equally enjoyable, and all the wisteria are so pretty and feels mysterious looking at the view. The souvenir store has lots of small gift items that could be a great souvenir to bring home as well. In the end, we all felt that the trip was enjoyable and the time spent was worth it.

Unbelievable as one of the best parks ever seen. Enjoyed the evening and the atmosphere. Weather was great till there was a cold wind shift we had to leave. The cafe there was good too. I recommend visiting this place whenever in Tokyo. Over an hour driving.

Beautiful garden in the day, but even better by night when the entire garden is lit by millions of lights. You can buy tickets at the gate or online ahead of time through third parties to get a QR code. The north entrance is further from the train station but has a huge gift shop while the west entrance is closer to the station but smaller. Plan to spend at least and hour or two exploring by night.

4/29/2024 I went on this day and most things were in full bloom. Purple wisteria was going strong, although I could tell it bloomed before the white wisteria. White wisteria was probably at its peak and was absolutely stunning. Yellow wisteria had barely bloomed, so if you go later in May you’ll probably see it. Roses also had not bloomed. But everything else was in full bloom. I spent about 5 hours here, from 2:00-7:00, because I wanted to see the night views. 3:00-7:00 would have been better, but I got to take my time walking around the park and resting. There are a few places to get wisteria ice cream, so if you see a place with an extremely long line, you can probably find a much shorter line in a less busy area.

Yelp
It's 2 hours by train from Tokyo, but its a wonderful place. There is a JR route that takes you to a station next to the garden. The air is perfumed by the flowers. They have eateries (outside food court, stand alone eatery, food trucks) around so you can buy something to eat. I loved sitting at the benches and relaxing while enjoying the beautiful flowers.

Yelp
It was so beautiful that I had to take a lot of pictures. The park was a bit far from my hometown in Saitama. And the admission fee was high which was 1800 yen. The park was close to JR Ashikaga Flower Park Station. The park was huge. It took 2 or 3 hours to walk around. When I visited on May 7th, the peak of the famous wisteria was over. Probably, late April would be the best to visit. The most important thing to enjoy flowers is information. You need to check the latest information of the flowers at the website!

Yelp
If you enjoy flowers this is a place to visit they have flowers in bloom during the season so you can catch different varieties depending on the time of season you visit. The park is very large and they have outdoor food booths and also a restaurant on premises and couple ice cream vendors. Lots to see and do if you love floral you will love this park.

Yelp
It took over 2 hours from Shinjuku to get here but it was worth it to see this beautiful park, especially to take a breather from bustling Tokyo crowds. My friend took our time strolling the park and breaking for lunch, mochi snack from the food truck, and wisteria ice cream. We found plenty of places to sit and relax and enjoy the fragrant flowers. The wisteria trellis wasn't fully bloomed but there were plenty of other flowers and plants to see. Maybe give another week for the full bloom.

Yelp
Mystical, mesmerizing, stunning... unfortunately I do not have enough vocabulary to match its stunning scenery. This was my first to visit and it was full blown of wisteria beauty. Admission is not cheap. It's 1800 yen for adults. But I didn't mind it once I saw them. I definitely recommend wisteria illumination. Seeing them during day time is good but I'd definitely prefer seeing them in night time. It looks magical and stunning. I'd recommend not to bring your car unless you have high tolerance of bumper-to-bumper traffic jam. Closest station is 15min walk to the east. I find train is hassle free. But do note that it's a rural line and comes only twice an hour. And it doesn't mean every 30min either. Make sure to check the timetable.

Yelp
Welcome to Ashikaga Flower Park, one of the largest wisteria flower parks in the country. During my most recent trip to Japan, I surprised my friends by taking them here to see the gorgeous winter illuminations. The 10 minute walk from the JR station seemed very rural and dim until you finally reached the park with its spectacular lights. When the illuminations are in place, the park is opened until 21:00. The cost to enter the winter illuminations is ¥900 and well worth the experience. You first pass through the gift shop featuring hoards of Tochigi omiyage before entering the actual park. You'll be swept away with music that makes you feel like you're at a Disney theme park and will try your best to change your camera settings to capture all the lights. Each corner of the park was themed. We saw a marvelous castle with light fireworks, arches highlighting the four seasons, and a beautiful lavender portion with lights hanging from above that makes you feel like you're in a fantasy land. Despite it being such a busy time of year, you can manage to find areas of solitude where you can admire the lights and reflect even for just the briefest moment. This spot is perfect for dates with significant others or close friends as you embrace the cool winter air with a backdrop of a thousand tiny lights.

Yelp
Ashikaga is perhaps the most beautiful flower park on earth. It is hard to capture how spectacular the wisterias are. The purple and pink bloom first, then white, then yellow. 4/23/18, the purple are about a couple days past peak, the pink are peak, white are a few days from peak, and yellow just starting to bud. They are magnificent and need to be enjoyed in person. The evening illumination is other worldly and is a must!

Yelp
Ashikaga Flower Park is a must see! I saw a post on Pinterest of the wisteria and I knew that this park had to be on my late-April/early May to-go list. Now, one... I don't drive much, at all. This park is accessible by train, but it's rural and far. So I opted for a Yokoso tour leaving from Shinjuku. Definitely consider that option. While crowded during Golden Week (and I imagine almost every other time), the crowds do not take away from the beauty of the wisteria. The professional photos, while certainly better than mine, still don't totally capture how amazing the flowers are. It must be seen in person. The entire park is done well. Flowers abound. There are plenty of food venues offering snacks, beer, waters, ice creams. You may buy live plants to take home or a variety of other souvenirs. It's difficult to adequately describe how beautiful this garden is, so please see for yourself.

Yelp
We came on April 22 to see the wisteria flowers. It's about 2 hours out of Tokyo, depending where you are staying. The trip will take most of the day. Expect to spend at least 2-4 hours here depending if you eat or are taking photos. There were some wisteria trees that were starting to bloom but they were definitely not close to full bloom like how you see in photos. We were a little bummed out, but you can't predict nature completely. There were still a ton of beautiful flowers and we were even able to catch some of the cherry blossoms still blooming. This place was still definitely worth taking a trip to. Lots of great photo ops! You must try the wisteria ice cream and visit the gift shop. Make sure you bring enough yen since they don't take credit cards. ********* Go Ashikaga to see the wisteria and other flowers

Yelp
If you are coming from Tokyo, this is going to be an all day thing. Words can't begin to describe how beautiful this place is. The wisterias are incredibly beautiful. The gift shop is overly crowded so be careful. The gift shop does have some very unique items so I suggest you stock up. The wisteria ice cream flavor is amazing. It only has a light floral aftertaste. At nightnight they have a beautiful light show. They also have beer and some street food which was pretty amazing.

Yelp
Amazing gardens! We spent hours wandering through the wisteria trellises (full bloom April-may), the rose garden, which was just starting to show color, the azaleas and rhododendrons, water features and more. Great food stalls, and you must try the wisteria flavored ice cream.

Yelp
We went to the Ashikaga Flower Park in the city of Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture to view the Westeria flowers. It was near the end of the Westeria peak season so the flowers were all bloomed out. The best time to go is during Japan's Golden Week which starts around April 29th and lasts till May 5th. Admission into the park is 1800 yen. The Westeria trees have beautiful hanging flowers that give the appearance of grapes (purple color) and come in white, yellow, and pink also. They are artfully on trellis around the park. The park is sectioned with different areas to view the Westeria and also offer night viewing under lights. The park also offers areas for roses (not yet bloomed), as well as Rhododendron and Azalea. I even got to taste the Westeria flavored soft ice cream (300 yen) delicious. They have a free picture taking area with the option of purchasing your photo for 1000 yen which we did of course. You could keep the tiny photo for free. The Westeria are pretty much done for this season but the roses should be in bloom soon. We took several trains to get to the park, one was the Shinkansin (Bullet Train) and the last train was the JR Ryomo Line to the Tomita Station and then a little 15 minute walk to the park. Well worth the long trip!
