Where to See the Best Wisteria Blooms in Japan This Spring

"I was struck by the park's Kibana wisteria tunnel, and learned it houses more than 350 different wisteria trees including a celebrated Great Wisteria over 150 years old that blooms in shades from violet to pink, purple, white, and bright yellow; the grounds also feature more than 5,000 azalea bushes, peak bloom runs mid-April to mid-May, admission ranges from 900 to 2,100 yen for adults and 400 to 1,100 yen for children depending on the day, the wisteria are lit up at night, and the park even offers wisteria-themed soft serve and other goodies." - Talia Avakian Talia Avakian Talia Avakian is a lifestyle reporter based in Los Angeles with a love for outdoor excursions, off-the-beaten-path local finds, remote and historic hotels, and innovations in food. Easy access by car&trains with tons of parking lot available, your go-to illumination if you are nearby and want to experience beautiful and affordable illumination for the family to sight-see... just be there early though: ✿to get a choose from many food stalls available (their minced katsu is amazing). ✿ get the nearest parking lot to avoid long walks to&from on the cold weather. ✿enjoy the illumination completely without the full crowds coming yet --slow walks, tummy full, take photos with the family and just leave early if possible (maybe around 7) to avoid traffic going out✨🌟⭐✨💫.

The flower park was amazing. Unfortunately I went during the winter when the flowers were not in bloom. However I did get to see the parks Christmas Illuminations. Apparently this park is ranked within the top 3 Illuminations in all of Japan consistently every year. Overall the displays were amazing and the food options were just as good.

Ashikaga Flower Park – Where Nature Paints Its Own Fairytale Just a short train ride from Tokyo, Ashikaga Flower Park is truly a dreamland for anyone who loves flowers, colors, and a touch of magic. I finally got to visit this iconic spot in Tochigi Prefecture — and honestly, it’s every bit as breathtaking as the photos! The highlight of the park is, of course, the wisteria (fuji). Imagine walking under endless tunnels of soft purple, pink, and white blossoms gently swaying in the breeze. The air is perfumed, the light filters through the petals like watercolor, and everything feels otherworldly. The park’s 150-year-old Great Wisteria Tree is the real showstopper — its canopy of flowers looks like a purple waterfall cascading from above. Even beyond wisteria season, Ashikaga blooms beautifully year-round with tulips, roses, hydrangeas, and azaleas, so there’s always something to admire. If you can, stay until evening — the night illumination is stunning! The entire park glows with millions of lights reflecting off the ponds, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale garden. A few tips: check the bloom calendar before you go, as timing makes all the difference. The best period for wisteria is usually mid-April to mid-May. Go early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid crowds, and definitely try the wisteria-flavored ice cream — it’s as pretty as it tastes! Ashikaga Flower Park isn’t just a garden — it’s a full-senses experience that leaves you in awe of nature’s beauty. If Japan is on your travel list, add this to your itinerary. Trust me, it’s worth every step.

October 25,2025 -5pm One-time entry only Pretty small park, but attractions are left and right, so it's not really boring, especially at night illumination. You enter thru the shops There's a photography souvenir for free with a tiny photo and you can buy the big photo for 1500 yen, it has the ashikaga design photo card which is really nice not just plain photo print Autumn roses were beautiful. Blooming lotus and cosmos. By the wisteria illumination, it is very fragrant. I'm not sure if they used a wisteria diffuser or its a different scent by other plant. It smells so good. Worth the visit

Google
“Ashikaga Flower Park" is truly breathtaking, especially during wisteria season. The藤の花 create magical tunnels of purple, white, and pink, glowing beautifully at night when illuminated. The park is well-organized, with clear paths and plenty of spots to take photos. It’s easy to access from the nearby station, making it a convenient day trip. While it can get crowded during peak bloom, the stunning藤の花 displays are absolutely worth it. A must-visit for flower lovers. Especially nowadays, this place might seem as a model for "Demon slayer 鬼滅の刃", so thanks to t, it attracts more visitors than before.

Google
Ashikaga Flower Park is sublime and I didn’t even visit during wisteria season. I only saw the main wisteria tree in its barren form, but due to its great size and outstretched vines, I just know it is an amazing sight when it is in full bloom. Even without wisteria, the other flower arrangements are gorgeous. I got to try wisteria ice cream, which was such a pretty purple. The taste was rather mild, but unique. I loved the gift shop. So much purple! It was a sight for sore eyes for a purple fiend like myself. There were so many different types of omiyage—many non-purple products, too—that I probably spent as much time browsing in the shop as I did the flower park. I had a great time and would absolutely love to visit again when the wisteria bloom.

Visited during Wisteria season in June, it was very pretty. The wisteria ice cream is a must! For foreigners visiting, there is a cash only eatery so make sure to bring extra or near the entrance you can use card but with less food selection.

Yelp
Beautiful garden in the day, but even better by night when the entire garden is lit by millions of lights. You can buy tickets at the gate or online ahead of time through third parties to get a QR code. The north entrance is further from the train station but has a huge gift shop while the west entrance is closer to the station but smaller. Plan to spend at least and hour or two exploring by night.

Yelp
It's 2 hours by train from Tokyo, but its a wonderful place. There is a JR route that takes you to a station next to the garden. The air is perfumed by the flowers. They have eateries (outside food court, stand alone eatery, food trucks) around so you can buy something to eat. I loved sitting at the benches and relaxing while enjoying the beautiful flowers.

Yelp
It was so beautiful that I had to take a lot of pictures. The park was a bit far from my hometown in Saitama. And the admission fee was high which was 1800 yen. The park was close to JR Ashikaga Flower Park Station. The park was huge. It took 2 or 3 hours to walk around. When I visited on May 7th, the peak of the famous wisteria was over. Probably, late April would be the best to visit. The most important thing to enjoy flowers is information. You need to check the latest information of the flowers at the website!

Yelp
If you enjoy flowers this is a place to visit they have flowers in bloom during the season so you can catch different varieties depending on the time of season you visit. The park is very large and they have outdoor food booths and also a restaurant on premises and couple ice cream vendors. Lots to see and do if you love floral you will love this park.

Yelp
It took over 2 hours from Shinjuku to get here but it was worth it to see this beautiful park, especially to take a breather from bustling Tokyo crowds. My friend took our time strolling the park and breaking for lunch, mochi snack from the food truck, and wisteria ice cream. We found plenty of places to sit and relax and enjoy the fragrant flowers. The wisteria trellis wasn't fully bloomed but there were plenty of other flowers and plants to see. Maybe give another week for the full bloom.

Yelp
Mystical, mesmerizing, stunning... unfortunately I do not have enough vocabulary to match its stunning scenery. This was my first to visit and it was full blown of wisteria beauty. Admission is not cheap. It's 1800 yen for adults. But I didn't mind it once I saw them. I definitely recommend wisteria illumination. Seeing them during day time is good but I'd definitely prefer seeing them in night time. It looks magical and stunning. I'd recommend not to bring your car unless you have high tolerance of bumper-to-bumper traffic jam. Closest station is 15min walk to the east. I find train is hassle free. But do note that it's a rural line and comes only twice an hour. And it doesn't mean every 30min either. Make sure to check the timetable.

Yelp
Welcome to Ashikaga Flower Park, one of the largest wisteria flower parks in the country. During my most recent trip to Japan, I surprised my friends by taking them here to see the gorgeous winter illuminations. The 10 minute walk from the JR station seemed very rural and dim until you finally reached the park with its spectacular lights. When the illuminations are in place, the park is opened until 21:00. The cost to enter the winter illuminations is ¥900 and well worth the experience. You first pass through the gift shop featuring hoards of Tochigi omiyage before entering the actual park. You'll be swept away with music that makes you feel like you're at a Disney theme park and will try your best to change your camera settings to capture all the lights. Each corner of the park was themed. We saw a marvelous castle with light fireworks, arches highlighting the four seasons, and a beautiful lavender portion with lights hanging from above that makes you feel like you're in a fantasy land. Despite it being such a busy time of year, you can manage to find areas of solitude where you can admire the lights and reflect even for just the briefest moment. This spot is perfect for dates with significant others or close friends as you embrace the cool winter air with a backdrop of a thousand tiny lights.

Yelp
Ashikaga is perhaps the most beautiful flower park on earth. It is hard to capture how spectacular the wisterias are. The purple and pink bloom first, then white, then yellow. 4/23/18, the purple are about a couple days past peak, the pink are peak, white are a few days from peak, and yellow just starting to bud. They are magnificent and need to be enjoyed in person. The evening illumination is other worldly and is a must!

Yelp
Ashikaga Flower Park is a must see! I saw a post on Pinterest of the wisteria and I knew that this park had to be on my late-April/early May to-go list. Now, one... I don't drive much, at all. This park is accessible by train, but it's rural and far. So I opted for a Yokoso tour leaving from Shinjuku. Definitely consider that option. While crowded during Golden Week (and I imagine almost every other time), the crowds do not take away from the beauty of the wisteria. The professional photos, while certainly better than mine, still don't totally capture how amazing the flowers are. It must be seen in person. The entire park is done well. Flowers abound. There are plenty of food venues offering snacks, beer, waters, ice creams. You may buy live plants to take home or a variety of other souvenirs. It's difficult to adequately describe how beautiful this garden is, so please see for yourself.

Yelp
We came on April 22 to see the wisteria flowers. It's about 2 hours out of Tokyo, depending where you are staying. The trip will take most of the day. Expect to spend at least 2-4 hours here depending if you eat or are taking photos. There were some wisteria trees that were starting to bloom but they were definitely not close to full bloom like how you see in photos. We were a little bummed out, but you can't predict nature completely. There were still a ton of beautiful flowers and we were even able to catch some of the cherry blossoms still blooming. This place was still definitely worth taking a trip to. Lots of great photo ops! You must try the wisteria ice cream and visit the gift shop. Make sure you bring enough yen since they don't take credit cards. ********* Go Ashikaga to see the wisteria and other flowers

Yelp
If you are coming from Tokyo, this is going to be an all day thing. Words can't begin to describe how beautiful this place is. The wisterias are incredibly beautiful. The gift shop is overly crowded so be careful. The gift shop does have some very unique items so I suggest you stock up. The wisteria ice cream flavor is amazing. It only has a light floral aftertaste. At nightnight they have a beautiful light show. They also have beer and some street food which was pretty amazing.

Yelp
Amazing gardens! We spent hours wandering through the wisteria trellises (full bloom April-may), the rose garden, which was just starting to show color, the azaleas and rhododendrons, water features and more. Great food stalls, and you must try the wisteria flavored ice cream.

Yelp
We went to the Ashikaga Flower Park in the city of Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture to view the Westeria flowers. It was near the end of the Westeria peak season so the flowers were all bloomed out. The best time to go is during Japan's Golden Week which starts around April 29th and lasts till May 5th. Admission into the park is 1800 yen. The Westeria trees have beautiful hanging flowers that give the appearance of grapes (purple color) and come in white, yellow, and pink also. They are artfully on trellis around the park. The park is sectioned with different areas to view the Westeria and also offer night viewing under lights. The park also offers areas for roses (not yet bloomed), as well as Rhododendron and Azalea. I even got to taste the Westeria flavored soft ice cream (300 yen) delicious. They have a free picture taking area with the option of purchasing your photo for 1000 yen which we did of course. You could keep the tiny photo for free. The Westeria are pretty much done for this season but the roses should be in bloom soon. We took several trains to get to the park, one was the Shinkansin (Bullet Train) and the last train was the JR Ryomo Line to the Tomita Station and then a little 15 minute walk to the park. Well worth the long trip!
