How to Plan an Aspen Family Vacation, According to a Mom Who Did It

Google
Camping near Aspen and needed something to do on a rainy day. Went swimming, sat in hot tub, steam room, sauna and took hot showers. Relaxed in lounge and watched football game. They also have ice rink, rock climbing, tennis courts and maybe basketball courts (didn't venture the whole place)

Awesome building and people! Great facility to take the family, grab a snack or simply play or watch a game of hockey. Nearby fields for sport are totally a plus and in the winter, the slopes are a fantastic spot of the family to slide into the fun winter games.

Water park, ice skating rink, outdoor activities. So much to do - this place is the heart of summertime fitness in Aspen. Beautiful facility and staff were very friendly.

We went here on January 2025… the whole soccer field was covered by at least 10 inch snow and there is an area where kids can do sledding all without paying and fee… our kids enjoyed a lot

We’ve been coming to the Aspen Rec Center for over 12 years and have always enjoyed it as a family-friendly highlight of our trips. That changed this year. We paid $125 for a full day of fun, but what we got instead was a frustrating and frankly infuriating experience marred by inconsistent rule enforcement, poor communication, and lifeguards who seemed more interested in policing us than ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all guests. The core issue? An obscure policy requiring all children under 8 to pass a 50-meter swim test or remain within arm’s reach of a parent in the water, even in shallow or low-risk areas. That rule has never once been enforced in any of our previous visits, and we were blindsided by its sudden and aggressive application. Our six-year-old son, who is over 4 feet tall and a fairly capable swimmer, attempted the test but understandably struggled with the excessive distance—50 meters is no small feat for a child his age. So we complied with the rule… and were punished for it. Despite following instructions, we were relentlessly harassed by lifeguards whenever either of us was more than a few feet from our son—even when he was safely in a lifejacket, in 1–2 feet of water, and within easy view. At one point, he wasn’t even allowed to remain in the shallow kiddie pool unless one of us was physically in the water with him. This level of rigidity borders on absurd. Meanwhile, multiple other children—clearly under 8, some even under 5—were freely swimming in the lazy river and using other attractions without a parent anywhere nearby. One group, watched over by a non-swimming sitter who didn’t even have a suit on, was left alone entirely. When we asked why they weren’t subject to the same scrutiny, a lifeguard claimed the kids were “8,” then admitted they don’t check IDs. The double standard couldn’t have been clearer. Those who lied or simply ignored the rules were left alone. We, who followed the rules, were targeted. To make matters worse, the guidance from lifeguards was inconsistent. Our son met the height requirement for the waterslide and was initially told he could ride, but later denied access because one of us wasn’t at the bottom to catch him—even though another guard had said it was fine. No one seemed to be on the same page, leaving us confused and increasingly frustrated. Even worse, none of these rules were communicated to us at check-in. Had we known that a parent was expected to be in swimwear and in the water at all times with a child under 8, we could have made a more informed decision—or chosen not to spend $125 on what turned out to be a stressful and disappointing day. If you’re going to enforce rules this strictly, communicate them clearly before payment is taken. And if you’re having issues with locals lying about their kids’ ages, there are better solutions than punishing honest families. For example, offer discounted or free entry for parents of younger children, or raise the rate for older ones. But don’t create a system where lying gets rewarded and rule-following parents get penalized. We’ve loved the Aspen Rec Center for years. But after this experience, we’re not sure we’ll return. This wasn’t about safety—it was about poor leadership, inconsistent enforcement, and a failure to treat families fairly and respectfully.

Yelp
A great rec center. They got plenty of classes through out the week to make anyone happy. The ice skating rink is pretty big. The showers had a good water pressure but it was disappointing to only see mystery soap on the wall. For someone who only comes through once in a while paying almost $29 to not have the basic soap/shampoo/conditioner on the wall is kinda sad. I expected more for it being in Aspen. The staff is really friendly and there is plenty of parking.

Yelp
Very cool place to visit especially if the weather is not cooperating outside. Large and clean facility including full-sized hockey rink, with ice-skating available. Full-size rock climbing wall, professional level. The pool area is huge, with a lazy river, big waterslide, and area for little kids. Also a competition sized Olympic pool and steam room/Sauna. Everything you could possibly want to do indoors is here. Day pass rates available online. Pro tip: get the month long family pass if you are planning on more than twice. Once you experience it your kids will want to come back.

Yelp
What a fun and diverse place. You could swim, dive, enjoy a lazy river pool, climb and ice skate all in one afternoon! I wish we had something like this in my home town!

Yelp
We were visiting CO on winter break and went to Aspen for a day trip. The recreation center was a terrific indoor spot for the kids. This was my alternate plan once I discovered the Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs was close during the week. The kids spent a couple hours in the pool area and more time playing outside in the snow. It is very cool to be swimming in a warm pool with snow out the window. The kids would have stayed in the pool for longer if I had let them. Be aware that kids under 8 have to be accompanied with an adult in the pool unless they can show a lifeguard that they can swim 25 yards on their own. My son probably could have passed, but not my daughter. I would have let them stay in the pool for as long as they wanted If I didn;t have to be in the pool with them. The water was a very comfortable temperature, but there is only so much for an adult to keep themselves occupied in a kid's pool. I liked that they had enough noodles and small inflatable balls to play with. Unfortunately my son kept trying to launch them into the ceiling. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Be prepared to spend some money when you come here but it was all affordable for what was included. We did not get a chance to use the sledding area because my kids were pretty tired by the end of the day. I would recommend this place as a nice break from skiing and snowboarding while in Aspen in winter.

Yelp
A very good recreation center with some great facilities. The staff was always nice and the facilities are well maintained and always clean. There's plenty for everyone to find something including ice rink, pool, hot tubs, steam room and sauna, cardio room and weights room, rock climbing wall and others. This all in addition to the nearby outdoor football and European football field, tennis courts and numerous hiking and biking trails. Wouldn't mind if it were open a bit longer in the evening as 9PM I feel is a bit early. The weights room can also be underwhelming to serious and committed users as it's rather small and cramped and, while well equipped, is missing some key items. Daily passes can be expensive, but a monthly pass is quite affordable really.

Yelp
As a resident of Aspen, we are so fortunate to have this fabulous facility. Inside or out, the recreation opportunities are endless. Visitors are awestruck by the 2 ice rinks, climbing wall, workout rooms and the aquatic opportunities. Many school districts could learn the positive advantages of joining efforts of combining facilities with after school sports, clubs, and training.

Yelp
The PERFECT non skiing place to take my kids,2 and 4 years old, while on vacation in Snowmass. A true gem. The pool is super warm and very kid friendly. Lots of age appropriate stations that you can pick and choose. The staff is attentive and very nice. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Out of town visitor. The pool was smaller than I expected, but still pretty fun. The water slide opens at 12:30. $16.50 for kids, $19 for adults with all day access. I am traveling w my two kids and there isn't a gym child care for me to workout, but that's ok. Although, they do have a little sandwich shop in the center- $5 for kid meal of pbj and chips, I bet the cheapest in town!

Yelp
Wonderful option for families looking for a place to cool down and have fun while in Aspen! We were camping in the area and were looking for a place to escape the heat for an afternoon and this was the perfect spot. Lots of fun water features in the pool (slide, lazy river, water guns) and space to hang outside. We didn't take advantage of the climbing wall, cafe or ice rink but that was all available as well. Clean, friendly, worth it.
