Before I start this review I want to make it clear that this is not about the staff. I'm sure the staff are great. They're just trying to do the best job they can, given the circumstances. It's pretty obvious that Aspen Village is sorely under staffed, especially as it pertains to cleaning or any other type of maintenance.
Understaffing is the fault of the people who manage this hotel and others related to it in Waterton. There is no excuse for being understaffed, given the nature of tourist season in Waterton. For people like me who have spent a long time on the road, who are tired and want to lay on a bed for a short while to recover, when the check-in time says 4pm it should be at that time and not nearly two hours later. Why has management left Aspen Village understaffed for the better part of multiple tourist seasons in Waterton?
Speaking of maintenance, when I walked the grounds of this motel's sister company Waterton Lakes Lodge, I noticed a broken down Washing machine outside a maintenance building. What was telling to me is that washer didn't look like a heavy duty machine that hotels normally use to disinfect their towels and sheets, rather a unit used in family homes. This explains the lack of cleanliness regarding the white bedding in our room and the towels too.
If I could title this review it would read "Lipstick On a Pig," because on the surface this place looks like it was recently renovated. These renovations are only surface measures and don't really make for a more pleasant stay.
This company has decided to use either manufacturered hardwood or some form of vinyl plank throughout their hotel rooms, even in the washrooms. Using this type of flooring in a washroom is a no no for reasons I will now explain:
When we entered our room and checked for cleanliness, the floor around the toilet smelled like urine. With flooring such as this in washrooms, there is no water resistant protection like when ceramic tile is used and moisture of any kind can seep through the seams and sits underneath. If one looks at the ceiling of unit #1 where we stayed, there is a water stain on the ceiling where the room above likely had water on the floor.
Speaking of water, my wife had one semi-warm shower in the evening and then after that point the water was essentially cold. When I tried to utilize the water in the later evening and my elderly mother tried to have a shower in the morning, the water was essentially the temperature of Waterton lake. We called the staff at the other adjacent hotel to ask about the water issue during the night, to which they replied they would restart the boiler, which obviously never happened. Therefore, either the staff lied to us, or they don't have a clue how to deal with issues such as water maintenance.
The renovations in these rooms at Aspen Village are nothing to call home about, I find the craftmanship and attention to detail to be lackluster. Crown moldings and baseboards with no milling or fit; thin walls where you can hear your neighbours and their dogs barking at all hours; from leaky floors to questionable electrical and plumbing, nothing seems to be done correctly or to code in this motel. Wall outlets are too low, bathroom sinks are too high; there's no air conditioning in these units which would be a killer on really hot days. Therefore, I would not recommend staying here, unless you have no other choice. In fact, I'd probably stay in Pincher Creek and then drive to Waterton. Save yourself some cash and annoyance. The $300 price tag ain't worth it.
Aspen Village has you with location, but other than the beautiful view I am having difficulty trying to think of another positive vibe I received from this menagerie of Waterton motels.
