On the Grid : Association Soierie vivante

"Soierie Vivante, it’s two workshops in the heart of the Croix-Rousse: a municipal workshop of lace-making and a weaving workshop, both distant of 800 meters. This association safeguards the last two weavers workshops/Canuts homes belonging to the city of Lyon. A guided tour and a demonstration of the powered looms takes place throughout the year from Tuesday to Saturday: at 2pm and 4pm for the lace-making workshop and at 3pm and 5pm for the weaving workshop. A beautiful way to discover the history of the Croix-Rousse and the life of the silk weavers." - Servane Tranchant & Séverin Millet

Our family loved the loom weaving workshop! We were able to design our own textiles very easily. The staff and volunteers were very informative and generous. We were given personal attention and they even brought snacks for our sons and spoke to us in English so we could fully participate. Our favorite family activity in Lyon - especially on a rainy day.

Three very large looms in an interesting setting. Nice shop. 40 minutes of explanation, all in French supplemented by a card containing some background information in English. If you don't speak French fluently I wouldn't recommend this.

Super! We did the 2 workshop tour, starting here and ending at Atelier de municipal de tissage down the road. It was an easy stroll between the two. Arrive a little early so you can enjoy the little shop and beautiful, fairly priced creations. The tours were both interesting (with loads of printed detail in English and German, and clearly spoken French). Incredible preservation of a party of Lyonnaise heritage. Bravo!

Association Soierie Vivante is a dedicated organization in Lyon focused on preserving and promoting the city's rich silk-weaving heritage. Lyon has a long history as a center for silk production, and this association plays a crucial role in keeping that tradition alive through various initiatives and programs. The association often organizes workshops, exhibitions, and events that educate the public about the art of silk weaving and the techniques involved. Visitors can participate in hands-on experiences, learning from skilled artisans and gaining insights into the intricate processes of silk production. These activities aim to foster appreciation for the craftsmanship and cultural significance of silk in Lyon's history. In addition to educational programs, Association Soierie Vivante may also collaborate with local artists and designers to create contemporary works that incorporate traditional silk techniques, bridging the gap between history and modernity. This approach helps to sustain the craft and encourages innovation within the silk industry. Overall, Association Soierie Vivante serves as an important cultural hub, celebrating Lyon's textile heritage while actively engaging the community in the preservation and appreciation of silk weaving. It's a wonderful place for those interested in textiles, craftsmanship, and the artistic traditions of the region.

Sweet visit to the former home of Mme Letourneau, where she wove (after his father died) trimmings or narrow decorative ribbons in the three looms dating to 1870 fitted to their apartment. One loom is set up with 18 individual mini-looms and warps and the pattern is woven using the Jacquard mechanism of subsequent punched cards for picking up the correct threads for each row. Lovely little shop for unique souvenirs in the other of the rooms and short presentations held every opening day at 2pm and 4pm. Very welcoming personnel.

We did the workshop and tour. For the workship, we wove with a traditional loom. We picked out the thread and at the end they stitched it into something small of our choice. My sister did a small purse and I did an owl. It was a great experience. Would be especially good for children, but I'd say is fun for all ages. Would highly recommend! But some advice, the sign for the building is small and there's construction outside, but if you follow the building numbers, you should be fine.
