"We used to order lunch from Astro, a place that we loved. I’d been going there for years because I did so many plays at Manhattan Theatre Club, but it closed — temporarily, hopefully — in December." (Note: As of April 2021, Astro has fully reopened.)

Quick and easy if you are nearby and need to get in and out, but other than that it’s expensive for what it is and probably not worth the visit. I can see a nostalgic factor to the seniors who frequent here but if you’re looking for a good diner with lots of options and bang for your buck, this one’s not it. We got two fairly small, standard dishes (egg and ham sandwich + BLT) and it was over $50 incl. tax/tip. On top of that, this place is very small and even walking in the aisles was hard… and I’m a relatively tiny person. The setup isn’t good for lounging and with the prices high, food quality pretty OK, safe to say we won’t be coming back.

Google
This is a quick stop spot. I’m not sure I’d enjoy coming back, but it seems to have a-lot of foot traffic. The menu is pricier than I expected. The location is great, that’s a win.

An Excellent vibe restaurant for breakfast & brunch. Great variety Loved the Greek yogurt & granola. The omelet was OK, not the best taste Excellent & fast service

Google
Cute diner with good breakfast sandwiches! The service was nice and food came out fast. Great place to try NYC bagels. This is a good place if you want to stop by to get something small. I love the small booths and atmosphere of the place.

Google
What a gem… fastest coffee in the city.. family owned and wonderful place.. have a good food at a classic dinner

Google
Astro Diner or as we read it on the green sign - “Restaurant” : If you want a VERY quick breakfast and good quality cooked exactly as desired - go here! Carnagie Diner was great food but very slow. This is for good food but super fast! Our server was great, attentive and fast as lightning too! Fast without sacrificing quality is hard to find.

Google
No wait for a table for 2, around 10:15 am on a Saturday. Quick & efficient staff from ordering to receiving the food to receiving the check. Food was awesome, price was fair, portions were perfect. Constantly being cleaned, quiet environment for the size. 10/10 recommend.

Google
I ordered the Chicken and Waffles which was not on their paper menu but obviously online.. it clearly shows bone in chicken and some type of glaze.. instead I received 3 frozen generic chicken tenders cut up and was charged $32. Do not recommend

Yelp
I got food poisoning here grub eating the salad/Caesar/blue cheese dressing/strawberry mimosa.

Yelp
We were searching for a place to have breakfast before going to the MOMA. We stumbled upon Astro. I'll be brief - we ordered a veggie omelette with cheese - it was inedible. It had a very bad under taste that may have been from either the grill or the spray they're using. The omelette itself was a pile of egg with the vegetables and cheese mixed in - the presentation was atrocious. However, I really don't care how it looks, as long as it tastes good. We sent it back. However, we also ordered the pancakes, which were good. They were fluffy, and tasted fine. Go figure.

Yelp
You don't find these old school diners around anymore. My girlfriends and I had breakfast on the last day in NYC. Ironically I ordered a California omelette with hash browns. They also had their own breakfast orders as shown in the picture. The waiter was attentive and the restaurant was the old school NY diner feeling!

Yelp
This place is incredible. The staff is attentive, friendly & extremely helpful & knowledgeable. The menu is extensive and the food besides being delicious is fresh, plentiful & arrives quickly. Our server Gabriel was remarkable, friendly with a great smile & attitude. Ask for his section. You'll be glad you did. All in all, while in NYC one should make an effort to treat oneself to Astro Restaurant!

Yelp
Small and unassuming, but we were greeted by a warm staff ready to accommodate our every need. I highly recommend the hot cocoa, cheap mimosas, & cool mugs (crispy lettuce) Did not skimp on portions 10/10

Yelp
This sweet little diner is clean, efficient, helpful, and the food is loaded with flavor. We both had the smoked salmon eggs benedict and man oh man - it was HUGE! We shoulda shared. The breakfast potatoes were really good, could've been a little bit more crispy. But the bennies themselves were loaded with flavor and the eggs were perfectly poached with creamy lemony hollandaise all over the place. Thanks a bunch!

Yelp
Wow this place was bustling with people and servers the food was quick and good. Typical diner food. I got the breakfast wrap was customizable which I really liked. Have no complaints and defintely would come back for the quick and friendly service.

Yelp
It's a small place but food was great and service was amazing! Definitely going back next time in town!

Yelp
We came here for breakfast on a chilly morning. The ambience was something right out of a little movie.. a cozy diner, friendly staff, customers engaging with the staff and one another was great! It is a small place. That's why the term cozy..... and the restrooms, clean and really cozy! Did I say friendly staff? They were amazing! Treated us like we come there all the time! We ordered a late brunch essentially. Everything was great. Drinks: mimosa, coffee and Diet Coke...See our pics for our order and note, I did not order extra bacon; it came like that and I love bacon! I am from the south and saw that they had grits on the menu but I missed them since I came a bit late for a breakfast meal (a bit after 12). When I come to New York again one day, this place will be a for sure visit for breakfast!! And I will come early to try out the grits! Sits on the corner of the block and it is just a block from the Conrad hotel. We're in New York, so I figure the prices were more than reasonable and especially when I compare it to other places that we visited within the main parts of the city. Thanks Astro for a wonderful experience!
google avatar

Suzette D.

Yelp
This is a must visit place. The breakfast menu is large yet simple, and the service was on point and friendly. Our meals were so good, especially the grits. Being from the South, this is very important! If you're looking for a feel good place for breakfast, you can't go wrong here.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick seating for a large group, quick service, and good food! The gyro was large with a good portion of sweet potato fries. The restaurant is small and tight but it's fun.

Yelp
This restaurant was just close to my hotel. When you walk in it seems like a usual NY diner. The food was mediocre, service was mediocre. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla for over $20. The plate looked full because of the potatoes. It was too much dry potatoes. I would have priced it a lot less. The server tried hard but seemed distracted with the other workers. Overall: I'm heading to saying if you like breakfast potatoes this is your spot

Par H.

Yelp
Chicken in the wrap was dry and flavorless. Asked for no mayo but was inside the wrap anyway. On a positive note, my lunch companion had a fantastic greek salad. Typical NY deli seating - cramped but had a nice neighborhood vibe.

Linda C.

Yelp
I loved it True authentic New York diner Food was great, service was fast and great. I will definitely be back

Yelp
Service was fine. Food was meh. The orange juice was advertised as fresh squeeze... there was nothing fresh about it. It tasted like someone dumped a cup of sugar inside. Lol - the eggs Benedict's sauce had a weird taste to it and smoked salmon tasted kind of bad as well. The best out of the three was the Nutella pancakes. Though, I wouldn't recommend coming here just for Nutella pancakes. It's very tight sitting here and quite busy. They do not have high chairs, so we had to keep our stroller open for our son to eat in.

Yelp
It's New York City, and I understand that, but $3 for a can of Coca-Cola seems a bit unreasonable. The place is tiny and cramped, like everything else in the city, but it was very close to our hotel across from Radio City Music Hall. I ordered the BLT, which was $12 and comes with a pickle and a tiny condiment container of coleslaw. I don't like coleslaw, so I asked if I could have an extra slice of tomato instead, but our server refused. He said it was a very small amount of slaw. My husband ordered the Pizza Burger, which is just a regular cheese burger with pizza sauce and slices of mozzarella instead of American cheese. He liked it. It came with fries and a pickle for $20. I would not say the staff were friendly, but they weren't rude either. Simply doing their job. All in all, it was satisfying.
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
Had the salmon eggs Benedict w grits. Was not good. Had a sour taste like the salmon was not fresh. The hollandaise sauce is awful. I couldn't even eat any of it. Service is subpar.
google avatar

Chelle S.

Yelp
Reviews are consistent with our experience. Huge menu. They're not good at making any one particular dish. Got the eggs Benedict, one egg was severely undercooked and one overcooked. Service was good. The place is fine for what it is. It's old and that's also a reflection of their food. All four plates were okay. It's like going to your mothers house, who is a mediocre cook. She can make anything, but it will just be okay. Overall disappointing experience.

Brian B.

Yelp
Hot, tasty food in generous portions. Served quickly. Get what you want when you want. Moderate price based on NYC definitions of "affordable".
google avatar

Connie D.

Yelp
If you love paying NYC prices and being treated like garbage, this place is for you. Food was mediocre. Dry potatoes. Smashed into a booth like a sardine. Barely an aisle to walk through. That's ok, we signed up for that, but.... Ordered immediately but the waiter stared us down the whole time trying to turn the table. Felt very rushed which I understand it's nyc, but trying to take our plate when it's half full after three minutes..... then an older man came over and said 'you leave now, there is a long line' was shocking, even for the city, and I have spent a lot of time there, I know the drill....BUT a 25 dollar breakfast that was dry and rushed us out. Still gave an excellent tip. But shame on them. FYI-I don't ever leave bad reviews, ever. I am an understanding person. This was bad enough for me to feel I had to say it. Really cringy.

Yelp
I am giving 4 stars simply because of the service not necessarily the food. Our waitress was so sweet: she was an older lady with an accent and she definitely knew how to talk. We came here on a whim as we were staying a hotel located right around the corner from here. We were initially seated in the back of the restaurant near the kitchen and it was scorching hot. So we opted to sit outside and luckily we got the last table to do so. I ordered a western omelet with American cheese and it came out with no cheese and very dry. The English muffin was good. The Turkey bacon was not ordered as we ordered beef sausage. We made our server aware and she fixed it with no issues. The grits were okay, definitely need the butter and cheese and salt and pepper though. I added pieces of my beef sausage in with the grits and that was my meal because I didn't want to wait longer for my food. I ordered a side of home fries as well but they were soggy and not what I expected. The mimosas came in weird cups but they were only $5 if you ordered food so you couldn't beat that. I would definitely dine here again as they had a lot of options, and my new auntie made it worth while.

Quin D.

Yelp
Cheap ingredients for expensive prices. Eggs are undercooked and still have VERY runny whites and potatoes are just bland and taste old somehow which I've never experienced with potatoes.
google avatar

Yelp
What a relief to be acknowledged when you enter a restaurant, seated and served in less than ten minutes. The lamp gyro was delicious.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast, amazing service, amazing price !!!! Location is convenient too, close to a lot

Yelp
For over 3 months I've been coming to use thier restroom because I work at a bank across the street and today the owner forbids me to come use thier bathroom. Not very good. Hope nobody goes to this restaurant.

Samantha M.

Yelp
I would give this restaurant negative 5 stars if I could. Only go here if you are ready to eat quickly and be rushed. Part of my party had to step out for a phone call before our food arrived. I began eating while he was on the phone and after 15 minutes of me eating, the manager came over and announced he had a line and could I take the food to go as my partner was on the phone DESPITE THE FACT I WAS STILL EATING. I have never in my life been asked to leave a restaurant and would NOT recommend even my worst enemies eat here. Completely rude and unprofessional.
google avatar

Dimitri P.

Yelp
Just outright gross. Server was rude , food tasted bad. Ordered a ice tea and they brought one that was bad, I told the server and he started arguing that they make it every day and it's not bad. I asked him to taste it and he just walked off. Food came out and when I say it was the worst food I've ever had in the city it was. Nachos were over cooked chips with shredded cheddar and tomato nothing else. Ruben wrap was soaking in grease, pork gyro was overly salty, fries had no seasoning and just inedible unless you want to have heart burn for the week. Do your self a favor and steer clear of this place unless you like throwing money in the fire pit. Use this place as a landmark to find the hot dog cart on the corner and eat there instead , standing up in rain or snow . Anything is better than this dump.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
I'd give this place about 3.5 stars. Our waitress was SO sweet. I adored her. She made good recommendations and was really nice. We ordered sandwiches for lunch. They were fairly average - nothing super special. We were seated right away when we walked in. We had a limited amount of time before going to MoMA and we were able to make our time slot with no issue as the food didn't take long. I had a turkey cheese melt and it was just ok. Could have used some seasoning. It was decent, nothing super special.
google avatar

Tyler V.

Yelp
Service was great. Got seated very quickly. The strawberry short pancakes were very good!
google avatar

Lorraine H.

Yelp
Hot dog was soggy and my order was wrong but nbd. I got onions which I specifically said was please no red onions! When I went to use the mustard, nothing came out, except for a big blob of dried up nasty looking booger like mustard Glad I'm just visiting because I wouldn't wanna ever eat here again.
google avatar

Yelp
No a bad place to go to breakfast. Typical diner fare! I had the Denver om and a cup of coffee food ok at best. If you never experience diner dinning good place to try. Kinda pricey for breakfast but being in the heart of Manhattan I can understand the price points. Try it you might like it!!
google avatar

Darrin J.

Yelp
Food surprisingly good having tried the filled French toast and chicken fried steak. The Astro doesn't take reservations so there can be a wait but they seem to turn tables quickly. Service is efficient and food is served very quickly which is unusual for most restaurants in NYC.
google avatar

Terry D.

Yelp
A teeny tiny diner on 8th Avenue, you could walk right past. We stopped in on a Sunday around 3:30. The place was busy and people never stopped coming and going. Big menu, all the regular diner options. We opted for some onion rings and chicken tenders, a light snack before an early show (5:00). Very standard but tasty. The onion rings were very good. The standout here is the wait staff - like I said tiny place but they were very attentive and moved quickly. This is your place if you want good, fast service with decent food at decent NY prices.
google avatar

Ashlyn S.

Yelp
food was great, but the service wasn't amazing. all of the waiters seem to barely speak english, and the food was somewhat expensive. 30$ for a wrap and fries. i would still recommend.
google avatar

Denisa R.

Yelp
I'm in town and happened to be staying at a hotel nearby. Of course, before checking out I wanted to grab some breakfast with family and this seemed like a popular diner in the area. The service: phenomenal. I think the amazing service albeit it does get busy and they not so subtly gave us the check early, but overall the staff was very accommodating as we had a baby with us. The food: okay. I ordered the eggs, potatoes and whole wheat toast. The potatoes weren't the typical diner breakfast type and were just okay. The egg was a bit runnier than I had ordered it. I ate my meal, but it was just meh. I wish I had truly loved it. Overall, cute diner with indoor and outdoor seating options, great service, but I'd pass on breakfast and check out their lunch or dinner options.
google avatar

Tanisha P.

Yelp
It's unfortunate that my Yelp was not loading before I went here. My suggestion is to skip it. The service fine but the food has zero flavor. We essentially took a few bites of food and asked for the check. Disappointing
google avatar

Mr Wonton K.

Yelp
When you work late and need to find a place to eat afterwards, you better get to the restaurant by 9pm because most places close at 1030-11pm. I hesitated to try Astro because it didn't have that curb appeal and almost seemed that it was awkwardly jammed into a decrepit street corner. But I was out of choices at 10pm and went for it. The salad for $3 more was simple, fresh and generous. The boneless ribeye was a big cut of tender meat done between medium and medium rare, and quite frankly it tastes pretty damn good. The mashed potatoes seemed overly creamy but I'm not going to say it came from a box and the broccoli was a little overdone but I ate it all any

Meg J.

Yelp
We rarely ever visit the same restaurant when we travel but this is a must! Seated quickly, the food is delivered extremely fast and it's delicious! And to top it off.... best server ever, Irma! We asked to be at her table again! All Time fav server ever!
google avatar

Yelp
Avoid this place at all costs. It was empty inside, but the waitress told me to sit at a two top for some reason. I was there for maybe 30 minutes and the place got even emptier. I ordered a Greek salad without anchovies and guess what, it came with anchovies. The waiter apologized and took it back and he brought it back, of course, with the anchovies taken off except for one that was hidden beneath a tomato. If I had been allergic to anchovies, they would've had a serious problem on their hands. They ignored me for the entire meal, not even giving me more water, and by the time I realized what a dump this place was, I decided to give up. I will never come back and you shouldn't even go there in the first place. It was a total waste of $30. Yes, $30.

William P.

Yelp
Keeping it short, I was charged $21 for 4 eggs and bacon (takeout). Don't waste your money go somewhere else or a street vendor.
google avatar

Bruce B.

Yelp
My wife and I were first at Astro's yesterday for breakfast. We returned today, and we've invited a visiting couple to join us here tomorrow. We ate outside, under scaffolding, but enjoyed the people-watching. Both times we had very good and very friendly service. The food is plentiful, the menu long and made for people who just want to eat well. The ambiance inside and outside is nothing special, but the place is.
google avatar

Paula L.

Yelp
Typical old school diner atmosphere with a touch of cozy. Love the staff. We had a great waitress. We just got done coffee and a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich, but it was solid. The coffee was weak so we got a shot of espresso to dump Into and it was perfect.

J D.

Yelp
Way too expensive. $7.99 for a tiny bowl of cereal and $19.99 for two eggs, two pieces of bread, some potatoes, and two paper thin slices of ham. A box of cereal is $5. The ham should have been a thick slice. Food was average. Orange juice was supposed to be fresh squeezed - I doubt it.
google avatar

Michaek S.

Yelp
Not bad! Three stars for food, 4 for service and atmosophere. Very busy, maze-like place full of cramped wooden booths made by the people that design airplane bathrooms. Hustle, bustle, like real life Frogger maneuvering lol - but that was actually fun. Staff Greek and Gruff, but ultimately friendly once past the stoic demeanor. Food - well, just OK. Coffee forgetable Folgers or generic Sysco or something... Food was hot, tasty, lots of it, prices reasonable - but no different than any local pizza joint around where I live in Baltimore burb. I had gyro platter, wifey crispy shrimp wrap - both good, with hot crispy once ftozen fries and good pickles and slaw. Not a thing wrong - but very standard carry out fare.
google avatar

Ilona P.

Yelp
Good diner in busy Manhattan. The diner was tiny but full of people. We got a table fast and the waiter was straight forward. The menu was huge! Literally- huge! Anyone could find something for themselves. Our group ordered regular breakfast items plus fresh toast. One minus was that the place wasn't the cleanest. Anyway, we will be back here because the service was great, food came fast and we loved the atmosphere.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Standard diner. Food ok and service good. Only problem are prices. It is a tourist trap so price gauging is expected. Spending $29 for a western omelette and coffee is a bit much. Website prices don't match actual price. Today was last time they will see us.
google avatar

Corlis W.

Yelp
Good breakfast! Service was slow. I really like the grits and beef sausage. Great place to go for a homestyle breakfast.
google avatar

Deron R.

Yelp
This is a pre Covid19 review. I've been to this diner a number of times for lunch as our office is across the street. Convenient and easy to get a table, Astro Diner delivers a hearty lunch. Huge menu with everything on it - some favorites, BBQ Beef sandwich with Fries, Grilled cheese with bacon and tomato with side of potato salad, which is a pro move. Sometime you just don't want fires and the side potato salad is a huge portion! Chef Salad, Cobb Salad all good. Hot roast turkey with gravy is the coma inducer. The dill pickles on the die are a great touch. Hopefully they are still open for take - Ill be back.

Yelp
Ordered off Postmates. The food was definition of bland. I had the French toast, eggs and sausage. The French toast was cold and had no trace of egg, just tasted like toast. The eggs and sausage were warm however eggs lacked seasoning. Sausage was fine. My bf had the fried chicken which wasn't seasoned with even a pinch of salt. The coconut shrimp was weird and fries also UNSEASONED. No salt or anything. I should have kept it safe and just got a sandwich but I thought diners were notorious for great breakfast.
