Mixed experience overall. I stayed here during the first week of June, and my family joined a few weeks later.
Starting with the positives—the ocean view from every hotel room is absolutely beautiful, and the location is convenient, just about 10 minutes from Atami Station. I stayed in the “Shin-kan” (new building), and the room was spacious, clean, and modern. Each room in the Shin-kan also has a private onsen, which made the somewhat inconvenient access to the shared bathhouse (located in the separate “Hon-kan” or main building) more manageable. Their shin-kan rooms were also wheelchair accessible.
Dinner at the Shin-kan’s teppanyaki restaurant was a highlight—delicious and well-executed. However, the same restaurant was used for breakfast the next morning, and it didn’t suit the traditional Japanese Ryokan-style meal. For instance, we were served stir-fried cabbage with olive oil and chirimen-jako, which felt redundant after a green salad. The dish seemed more like an attempt to make use of the teppan grill than something thoughtfully prepared for breakfast. It felt out of place and a bit underwhelming.
Unfortunately, my family’s stay at the Hon-kan a few weeks later was far less enjoyable. The rooms were older and smaller, and the overall experience didn’t match the Shin-kan’s quality. The Japanese-style dinner served in a different restaurant was mediocre. Even more concerning were the service issues—they encountered rude and unprofessional staff. When they found a large cockroach in their room at night and requested assistance, the staff member began arguing about whether it was actually a cockroach instead of simply helping. It was an inappropriate and frustrating response in a hospitality setting.
In summary, the hotel has potential—especially if you book a room in the Shin-kan. The view is outstanding, and some meals are enjoyable. However, service quality, breakfast offerings, and upkeep in the Hon-kan need improvement. I would recommend staying in the Shin-kan if you decide to visit.
