The Best Walking Tours in Athens (Updated 2025)

"I joined Athens Free Walking Tours, a group of volunteer historians, guides, and scholars; their two-hour walks move at an easy pace, cover the main historic sites around the city, are very informative, and while technically free they expect (and appreciate) tips." - Matthew Kepnes

Went with my partner and had a really good tour! The 3 hour tour passed like a breeze, the information was fun, and of course Andrew was a very knowledgeable tour guide. Andrew is a very welcoming individual and was a really nice person to talk to. The tips and tricks at the end of the tour were really helpful and helped us have an amazing stay in Athens. Thank you Andrew!

Excellent walking tour. Guide was a local archaeologist and historian so full of fascinating facts! I often daydream on tours but this one kept me very entertained. Highly recommend!

I came across this service a day before I arrived and decided it best to take this tour as it might provide the necessary on the ground information I may need to make decisions about my time in Athens. And was I right. Oh yes. Our guide Ariane, is a gem. She is knowledgeable and such a strong story-teller. She brought the sights alive and with surround sound. She provided the tools I needed to plan my tour productively. As a result of this encounter, my experience of Athens was greatly heightened and immeasurably enjoyed. Every city needs this service.

Even if there are some strict rules because of the virus, this great Team worked on to make our Athens visit possible. So we had George on the side, and he showed us the ancient city. His stories, his route and recommendations just made us clear, how important is to have a guide with you. We got a complete introduction and a super walk around ancient Athens, we loved it all! Thanks a lot!

I have been on dozens of walking tours in my life, but the one taken by george was definitely one of the most fascinating. George is an archaeologist, originally from Athens, with an enormous enthusiasm for telling the stories of this city. The tour lasted a little longer than the average walking tour (just under 3 hours), but my friends and I could have stayed and listened to him for more and more. He also gave us many tips on where to eat like real locals at cheap prices. Thank you very much for the experience!

I rarely rate free tours this highly, but Martin really made an impression back in October 2018. Not only did he show us the big sites around Athens and explain the history as well as the current significance (when applicable), but he also showed us places to eat and drink, and discussed the culture of Athens and Greece such that we could get a better understanding of how everything fit together. Sitting up near the speaker's rock in the breeze staring at the Acropolis and trying to connect multiple pieces of information was a great chance to stretch the mind. After the (extended) tour ended, he noted all his recommendations of places to eat/drink on a map so that everyone could take a photo. Then he spent 15 more minutes answering questions about visiting locations in and outside of Athens. Thank you, Martin.

We were lucky enough to have Maria as our guide, she was fantastic. Very knowledgeable about the city and its history and such a funny, interesting and wonderful personality. She offered so many recommendations and was able to answer any question we had! I highly recommend this tour, easy to book on to, well organised and if you have Maria I am sure you will have as amazing a time as we did! Efcharisto!

We planned to do this walking tour very early in our week-long stay in Athens as a way to get oriented to the Acropolis. What a great tour it turned out to be. Our guide, George, was very well informed and the route chosen was perfect for us. We met up, easily finding our group from the directions given, and started out. The tour goes away from the busy tourist area and you soon find yourself gazing at sites you wouldn’t have thought to explore. George combined explanations of mythology, history, archaeology, and modern culture in ways that helped us understand the importance of the ancient Greeks. When the tour concludes back at the starting point you will be ready to venture out on your own. I recommend you take this tour and give the guide a good tip
