The 6 Best Hostels in Athens (Updated 2025)

"I recommend it if you're looking to party—there's a raucous ground-floor bar and an even more raucous rooftop bar with a great view of the city, and the hostel runs pub crawls that include unlimited beer and sangria for one hour plus free shots along the way. The hostel itself is very nice: each dorm bed has privacy curtains, thick mattresses, and power outlets so you have your own little cubby, the bathrooms are super clean, and there's a fully equipped kitchen and an active common room with billiards and games; you also get a free welcome shot upon check-in." - Matthew Kepnes

We couldn't find anything wrong with our triple room in this hostel. Some people might bawk at the location, but we felt safe going around at night. Breakfast was reasonable, though there are also plenty of places within 5 minutes walk. Clean, daily cleaning and fresh towels and the air conditioning worked well. Rooftop was quiet at night and had a nice view of the Acropolis and city. Overall quite happy with this place. Shower products provided.

Great stay, facilities were very clean and well equipped ! Bedrooms also well kept. Wasn’t overly social, however this is likely due to the off peak season. Also located in Omonia - this isn’t the nicest area, but it does have excellent public transport connections and is within a 15-30mns walk of all the main attractions.

stayed at a hostel in the center of Athens and overall had a very good experience. The private room was clean, tidy, and well-maintained, and a cleaner came every single day – which really added to the comfort. The atmosphere was young, social, and positive. On the first floor there’s a great common area where people sit, eat, cook, and get to know each other. On the rooftop there’s a bar open at night with a direct view of the Acropolis – a really amazing experience! The staff were friendly, welcoming, and helpful, and I felt that they truly cared and kept everything well managed. 🔻 Important to note: The hostel is located in an area where many migrants hang around, and at night the surroundings can feel a bit uncomfortable to walk alone. However, the staff is aware of this – there is security and entry control to make sure no unauthorized people enter the hostel, which definitely adds to the feeling of safety.

Excellent value for large single room with clean ensuite, good pressure shower, fridge and large balcony. €5 breakfast is decent and nice view of Acropolis from rooftop bar. Street feels a little rough walking from metro, but close to great bars etc coming from other direction. Would come again.

A Home Away From Home: My Experience at Athens Hawk Hostel Finding a balance between a high-energy social scene and a secure, restful environment can be tricky when hostelling, but Athens Hawk Hostel nails the combination perfectly. Located right in the heart of the city, it serves as an ideal base for anyone looking to explore the historic wonders of Athens without sacrificing comfort. Location: In the Heart of the Action The hostel's location is its biggest selling point. Situated in central Athens, you are within walking distance of major landmarks like Omonia Square and the vibrant Psirri neighbourhood. Accessibility: It's incredibly easy to reach from the airport via the metro. Exploration: You can walk to the Acropolis and the Plaka district in about 15–20 minutes, making it perfect for those who want to save on transport costs. Atmosphere: Friendly and Inclusive From the moment you walk in, the vibe is welcoming rather than overwhelming. The staff are genuine "locals" in spirit—always ready with a map, a restaurant recommendation, or just a friendly chat. Social Life: The rooftop area is a standout feature. It's the perfect spot to grab a drink, watch the sunset over the city, and meet fellow travelers from across the globe. Vibe: It manages to be social without being a "non-stop party hostel," making it suitable for digital nomads and solo travelers alike. Safety and Security For many travelers, safety is the top priority, and Athens Hawk excels here. Secure Access: The hostel uses a modern key-card system for both the main entrance and the individual dorms. Storage: The lockers are spacious and sturdy (just bring your own padlock), providing peace of mind while you're out exploring the ruins. Peace of Mind: Even though the central area of any major city can be busy, the hostel feels like a secure sanctuary the moment you step inside. Comfort and Cleanliness Forget the "grimy hostel" stereotype. The facilities here are modern and well-maintained. Dorms: The beds are surprisingly comfortable, and many pods include privacy curtains, individual power outlets, and reading lights. Bathrooms: They are cleaned frequently throughout the day, which is a massive plus for a high-occupancy hostel. Climate Control: The air conditioning works perfectly—an absolute necessity during those scorching Athenian summers! The Verdict: Whether you're a backpacker on a budget or a traveler looking for a central, high-quality stay, Athens Hawk Hostel is one of the best value-for-money options in the city. It offers the warmth of a community with the professionalism of a boutique hotel. -- It is often the people behind the desk who make a stay truly memorable, and at Athens Hawk Hostel , Stamatia is undoubtedly the star of the show. The Highlight of My Stay: Stamatia at Reception While the facilities at Athens Hawk are great, what truly sets this hostel apart is the incredible hospitality, specifically from Stamatia at the front desk. From the moment I arrived, Stamatia made me feel less like a guest and more like a welcome friend. She has an amazing ability to handle the hustle and bustle of a busy central hostel with total grace and a genuine smile. Why she made my trip special: Expert Local Knowledge: She didn't just hand me a map; she took the time to point out the best local spots that aren't over-run by tourists, ensuring I had an authentic Athenian experience. Safety & Care: As a traveler in a big city, her presence made me feel incredibly safe. She was always attentive and went out of her way to make sure everyone was comfortable and looked after. Warmth & Professionalism: Whether it was a complicated check-in or a simple question about metro strikes, she handled everything with a level of professionalism and kindness that is rare to find. Stamatia is the "heart" of Athens Hawk. Her energy makes the hostel feel like a home away from home, and she is a massive asset to the team. If you're lucky enough to be checked in by her, you know you're in good hands!

I've stayed at a 2 people room with a seperate beds and satisfied overall. The room was very clean, including a clean bathroom as well. The only negative of this place is its location. Even though it's very close (around 500 meters to famous Monastraki square), the street does not seem very safe. Especially, if you are alone, it would have been a bit scared. Otherwise, it was a perfect experience staying here. Thanks for all.

If you’re girl traveling alone - I wouldn’t recommend this place. It’s closed to center, but the district is considered to be bad cause of immigrants and dirt. If you don’t like when weird dudes stare at you while you walk around, then its better to find another place😅There were only guys in my shared room. Some of them were respectful and other spoke loudly on the phone at 7 am, another one was unpacking his suitcase all night, so your neighbors are really random. Also, there’re no lockers for suitcase - your either leave it next to bed or in locker room which is not safe as the staff says. Towels are for extra price.Shared zone is cool. There’s computer, chess, pool, kitchen (including fridge, cutleries). I stayed for 2 nights and realized that it’s better to move to a regular hotel in better district🙈

Had a good stay! Nice and clean room, we stayed one night in a private room. A bit loud when other guests were coming and going in the night but it didn’t bother us much. The location is fine, the street is very dirty but it’s very centrally located. Cute rooftop bar!
