Where to See Ruins of Past Olympics

"Originally built in the early 1980s, the renamed Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA) received it’s biggest renovation for the 2004 summer Olympics by famed architect Santiago Calatrava. Like most of Calatrava’s work, the OAKA is stunning and graceful—but today is in a state of dereliction and disrepair. Athens’ Acropolis and Byzantine styles inspired Calatrava’s immense work, which cost over $10 million. Parts of OAKA are still in use, mostly by local sports leagues, and following 2004, sections were turned into worker housing. The former communication center is now government ministry offices and the badminton hall was converted into a theater venue. Like many large Olympic arenas, the Olympic Stadium of Athens, known as the “Spiros Louis,” is occasionally used as a large-scale concert venue; since 2004, Madonna, Bon Jovi and U2 have played there. Two streets in the complex were named after Greek Olympic medalists who themselves fell into disgrace. Konstantinos Kenteris, who withdrew from the 2004 games after failing to take a doping test (he claimed to have missed the test after sustaining injuries in a motorcycle accident, but an official investigation later proved the accident was staged) and Fani Halkia, who tested positive for methyltrienolone in the 2008 Olympics of Beijing and was subsequently banned. Today, the complex as a whole is empty and unkempt. It’s open for visitors, though you may be the only one visiting. Examining the velodrome’s soaring arches contrasted against rusting pools, broken fountains, and weed-filled stadiums all sprawling out over 96 hectares leaves one amazed how such a project declines in less than a decade. OAKA’s fate is not unfamiliar to Olympic stadiums. Travelers who’ve visited the disused stadiums of other past Olympics may find resonances—particularly Barcelona’s 1992 Olympic Stadium, only partially used today and, curiously, the site that made Santiago Calatrava famous for the telecommunications tower he designed. Like his Olympic complex in Athens, the telecommunications tower of Barcelona stands largely forgotten, remembered mostly by those who visited during the games and the few who visit today." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Attended a basketball game here and had a fantastic time! The arena is massive, well-organized, and offers great views from nearly every seat. The atmosphere during the match was electric, and everything from entrance to facilities was smooth and professional. Highly recommend visiting if you’re in Athens and want a true sports experience. Also, access via public transportation is easy and efficient

A really beautiful area full of spacious stadiums that host various events. The architecture is impressive!

Cool to see, great for photos. Kind of a shame that it’s (mostly) unused and unmaintained (or maybe it’s just because it was off season?).

I attended a concert here march 7th,2024. The drive to the Olympic sports center was excruciating, the traffic was awful, it took 3/4 hour to move a few hundred meters. I found the parking terrible, no one knew where to go and you end up parking miles away from your entrance. Once at the entrance gate we had to wait in an unorganised, hectic line that took another 10 minutes to navigate. There are a few food stalls outside selling, hot dogs, souvlaki, bbq corn & cold water. Once we got through the gate, we had to navigate alot of stairs, before we actually got inside to the stadium. We found the seats very narrow and uncomfortable. There are a few places inside that sell popcorn & drinks. During the intermission I visited the women's bathrooms, the line was very long & once inside the toilets were dirty, with dirty toilet paper piled up beside the toilet. I then went to wash my hands and there was no soap or paper towels to dry my hands. Because of the terrible ride into the stadium, we actually left 20 minutes before the end of the show so that we wouldn't get stuck in traffic on our way out. That being said, the actual stadium is very impressive.

I visited the center when there was no event going on, so it felt abandoned. However, it was great for walking and running. 👍😊

Very nice and well organized stadium. Even when overcrowded check in and going out is fast. Beware of the parking. Chose wisely a spot near the exit otherwise waiting time to exit can easily reach 30-40 minutes

The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens Greece was truly magical. Not only was Greece due to have the games finally return Athens never looked better. The city was the cleanest and nicest it ever was as far I can remember anyway. They truly had put on a show. That said, I’m very disappointed as to how this village has ended up. It’s totally deserted. At least it was when I last visited. Maybe it’s changed since and improved? I would love to return to find out. Nevertheless it was awe inspiring to visit and see the grounds. 👍☺️
