I drive all the way from Coram to eat at this Greek spot. Being Greek myself, I have tasted a lot of these dishes cooked by an old-world grandmother who had nothing but time on her hands to cook all day. Athens Square Cafe (ATC) manages to hold a candle to her handiwork. The setting is casual, perfect for lunch. I have not been there yet for dinner, so I'm not sure how crowded it gets but lunch service was passable but not great. The current waitress must be a family friend or something because she talked to some other customers and was not as attentive as possible. I didn't care too much because it's the food I come here for.
I've been to ATC a few times and always get an assortment of appetizers (Greeks call it mezes). The chicken gyros tasted as good as the ones I usually get when visiting Greece (I go every other year). The tzatziki (that white yogurt) is the best I've tasted in the Suffolk area. The other mezes there are excellent too (tarmosalata, saganaki, greek salad, etc) and the waitress didn't mind giving me piles of extra pita with the dips or if I needed more with my souvlakia. The chicken is very juicy and flavorful, which is why I usually go gyros or souvlaki.
The one time I deviated from my chicken pattern, I discovered the best thing one the menu and the reason I gave five stars. It's an eggplant dish, the name of which I forgot. It's basically a kind of lasagna with eggplant instead of pasta layers and stuffed with feta cheese and spinach. It's very savory and the salty feta compliments the eggplant, which was well cooked and not rubbery (can happen when one order eggplant). It was very dense so if you order this, don't go overboard on pita and mezes beforehand or you'll end up like me: carting most of it home. Luckily, the flavor held up the next day when I reheated it.
My last comment is on the average to above-average quality of the sides. A Greek restaurant doesn't HAVE to get things like french fries right but ATC does a good job with their essentials as well as their specialties.
