So firstly the staff are an absolute credit to the hotel, friendly, helpful and just very welcoming, EXCELLENT. Now, the downstairs reception and lounge area offer an old world charm and feels and smells like a hotel should. Dogs are welcome and there are free treats and bowls of water in the garden, which is a lovely place to sit. The bar is great, a bit on the small side and I really do think it could be expanded into whatever the ghastly “scene” is of mannequins in an attempt to show how old the hotel is. The dining rooms are lovely, yes they look a bit tired but this a huge building and to be honest it adds to the ambience. We stayed one night and had a superior room. Firstly the bathroom was obviously newly renovated and was immaculate. The shower is over the bath, but beware, the bath is slippery (I did put the mat down) but it needs a hand rail and the water pressure (had to be on eco) for the shower is poor. However, it’s a lovely immaculate bathroom with toiletries and great towels . The bedroom was a disappointment. A huge bed which should have been great and 3 lots of pillows each but it was uncomfortable and I ended up sleeping on a pile of towels for comfort. Why is there a stuffed lamb on the bed? The room needs updating and decorating, it was lovely and clean and the hospitality tray was great, a big tick for the proper sized kettle and mugs. Breakfast was excellent, again friendly and warm staff, serving toast and a choice of breakfasts with tea or coffee and juice. I can’t fault it. I’d absolutely go back for a drink or a meal in a heartbeat, we had a great night and really liked the barmen.
