AtholPlace House & Villa

"It takes an experienced, informed eye to design hotel rooms that are both hardworking and ravishing. Designer Sumari Krige transformed what was originally going to be her family’s private residence into this ten-bedroom urban retreat in the heart of cosmopolitan Sandton. Decorated in a palette of cool white and smudgy grays, as if to soothe the senses after a frenetic day, the rooms are enormous with tranquil garden views, sitting areas, glamorously appointed bathrooms, and luxury home comforts (Frette linens, flattering lighting, underfloor heating). Most of the furnishings, a high-style mix of contemporary and antique, were sourced on buying trips for the owner’s chic interior design store; African objects, glassware, and natural wood add textural interest. The hotel has a well-stocked library, a lounge cum dining room with an in-house chef, a large pool, and gardens just big enough to stroll in. Stay here if you want finely tuned advice on where to shop and what to do."

"When business began moving away from downtown Joburg, Sandton became the city’s new commercial hub, with corporate headquarters and mega-malls aplenty—though one wouldn’t guess it while staying at AtholPlace Hotel, which feels a world away. Despite its central location just a few blocks from the heart of Sandton, AtholPlace retains a secluded air, offering the ultimate urban oasis. Spend busy days taking care of business or splurging in the glossy Sandton City mall, then head for this chic, contemporary retreat. After meetings or a hectic shopping spree, guests can unwind in the heated pool, relax in front of the fireplace in the cozy library, or just read a book in the bird-filled gardens."

AtholPlace is absolutely the best in service, rooms, ambience, and food. We absolutely loved our stay here and only wish we stayed longer. The rooms are so luxurious and comfortable. The food was absolutely amazing! We can’t stop raving about it. We had dinner and breakfast there and loved everything they prepared. They go above and beyond. We traveled with our family and extended family (6 adults, 3 kids). The service is phenomenal-they think of everything and are so kind and helpful. This is definitely worth the experience!!

We stayed for one night in this lovely hotel. It was quiet and very comfortable (insane bed). The breakfast was so good — fresh and tasty (best granola of my life). The staff were friendly and helpful. A great stop for a relaxing night !!!

This was my first visit to Johannesburg, and generally South Africa. Upon my arrival, people told me that Johannesburg is not safe, and I was very worried about my stay. We arrived on the 20th in the morning after a long flight from Tanzania. The place was truly quiet, and the weather was amazing (cloudy). The team has been so good to me during my entire stay. They treated me like family. They did courtesy checks in the room frequently, which made me feel cared for. I found everyone educated and professional. They know what they do. They made me explore more about Sandton City despite the short stay. This was a great memory of my stay at Atholplace and in South Africa. I truly appreciate the big support, love, kindness, and care from Tatenda, Beauty, Jane, Melinda, and the maintenance guy who received us that morning (I can't remember his name). Also, the woman who was present that morning was really kind and made sure that we were comfortable. Without forgetting the guy who checked us in, he was very humble despite our attitudes, but professionally and successfully he was able to handle us and settle us. Atholplace is all someone may need for a breathtaking experience in Sandton.

We all spent two exceptional days at this Boutique/ Hotel and was not disappointed in any way what's so ever. They provided us with a fantastic service and were at our Beck and Call and even went out of their way to provide us with extra out of the ordinary services like arranging items to be bought at a nearby Gas Service Station after hours for some of the guests who requested they needed something urgently. We were all taken a back by how they bent over backwards to see that all of our needs were met.

One of the best hotels I can remember staying in for many, many years. Stunning rooms, lovely grounds and superlative staff, especially the wonderful Beauty, the afternoon/evening reception manager. The staff can’t do enough for you. The hotel driver, Tau deserves special mention as well, who took us around for three days and was so knowledgeable and helpful. The restaurant is top class, such imaginative dishes beautifully presented. The deal is all inclusive, so drinks in the room and round the pool are free issue, a lovely surprise. If only there was a rating higher than Excellent.

Stayed at AtholPlace Villa for a night either side of staying at Morukuru Owner’s House.||||The first stay was a bit odd- still very comfortable, but staffing seemed confused, supper very tasty but more a banquet for 20 than a meal for 4, and the place seemed a bit uncared for (pool not cleaned, scuff marks on the skirting boards, carpets a bit worn out). ||||All these concerns vanished with our second stay, helped in main by TT being in charge of everything, an excellent host. Supper was a delicious 4 course meal, breakfast was a delight, the pool was clean and just about warm enough for a morning swim, and (with our flight that evening) the team were good enough to let us shift to the equally opulent House to wait. ||||An exceptionally comfortable, peaceful place to stay and base yourself for Johannesburg.

After a long flight from the U.S. it was a joy to arrive at this beautiful small hotel. We were greeted warmly and shown immediately to our beautiful room. ||||The included breakfast was delicious. ||||We spent our first relaxing at the lovely pool. The hotel has an included shuttle service which ferried us to nearby shopping and dining. ||||It was a wonderful experience.
