Laguna Lodge, Santa Cruz La Laguna, Lago de Atitlan, Guatemala - Explore & Book

"The deep waters of Atitlán rest in a giant super crater formed when a mega-volcano blew its top some 85,000 years ago. Surrounded by 3 conical volcanoes, with colourful villages dotted along its shore, this 1,565m-high lake is sacred to the local Maya, who believe the world was born from its primordial depths. Pegged to a sheer cliff face in a hidden corner of Atitlán and only accessible by water is Laguna Lodge, a stone and thatch construction that sits in marked contrast with the backpacker guesthouses normally found around the lake. Created by eco-tourism pioneers Mayah (a Kiwi) and Jeffro (an Australian), its appeal lies in its blend of impeccable environmental credentials and modern luxuries, including a spa, a gourmet restaurant, 7 spacious lake-facing rooms and a 2-bedroom villa. It’s perfect for romancing couples, who will enjoy lazing in the outdoor pool at the water’s edge and dining on candlelit terraces. Nature lovers and twitchers will be in their element, too, as the private reserve on which the lodge sits is home to rare belted flycatchers, blue-throated motmots and other colourful birds. Highs Surrounded by the sounds of nature - lapping water, tweeting birds - with otherworldly views of the lake and its guardian volcanoes from the rooms, restaurant and poolOver 100 acres of protected flora- and fauna-filled forest to explore, with a guide if you want, plus kayaks to paddle around Well-crafted, flavoursome and organic vegetarian cuisine, with a daily changing set menu - even hardened carnivores will be impressedPampering treatments in the intimate Hummingbird Spa (hot-stone massages, Maya foot scrubs), plus a garden Jacuzzi - the perfect antidote to hikes around the reserveEvening drinks under the stars, and breakfasts in the company of busy hummingbirds as fishermen canoe back and forth Lows Service is wonderfully friendly, but it can sometimes be a little slow as all food and drink is freshly made Some paths in the reserve are steep and slippery. Tread carefully, and make sure you take a map to make sense of the markers The sunbathing area on the jetty lacks privacy as it doubles as a public dock" - Claire Boobbyer

The area of sunset lodge is remote those looking for a getaway to be lake side. We did lots of swimming just off the sunset lodge dock and the water seemed clean. There was an upper and lower deck to sun tan and some lounge chairs. There was free usage of paddle boards and kayaks. The lodge was about a 20 Minute walk to Santa Cruz - there is a path along the water that you can take all the way there. We had the Studio room which was a good size and had a patio which had a nice view of the volcano. The only downside was there was many ants in the room and would get on the bed- everyday we kept finding more. There was ant spray on the room so I’m sure the workers were aware of this. The shower had an interesting “window” in it that allowed bugs to come in through. It was a lot of stone stairs up and down to our room as the lodge is made on a hill -ensure to pack appropriate foot wear/headlamp for night time. This area is just limited to the hotel restaurant as it is remote. The food was okay, not so much flavour and lots of vegan options if you’re vegan and lots of avocado on almost every plate. The lodge does have coffee but no espresso beverages - can walk over to other hotels near Santa Cruz for a much better espresso coffee and different views of the volcano. Ensure to bring a towel for yourself as they only provided us with one towel each. We had to use the one towel provided for the lake and the shower. We also found out that you could spend 100Q for a day pass to spend there and use all amenities of the lodge - if we had known this ahead of time we would’ve opted to do this instead.

I got a day pass for 100Q and it included kayaking, paddle boards, hot tub, and a nice swimming area with chairs and towels. Staying here is probably nice as well but I was not a resident. The food is okay but everything about the day pass is great

We absolutely loved our stay at Sunset Lodge and would highly recommend to anyone. Stunning location, all the facilities you need, and fresh delicious food. The staff are so friendly, particularly Sissi who creates a really homely atmosphere!

I canceled my booking request within the notice period. They charged the full amount anyway. After a friendly reminder for a refund all future emails remained without any response. Probably taking advantage of the fact that I am not in the country anymore. Would have expected something better from an otherwise nice looking place.

A stunning property just a short ride from Panajachel. We stayed in the loft which spacious and had amazing views out on the lake. WiFi is solid for working and the apartment is well equipped. Ceci and her team truly were welcoming as well. The restaurant on site is delicious - mainly vegan but offers dishes with eggs and chicken. You can also walk 20 minutes to Santa Cruz for other restaurants or shops. The only slight downside is that there are no screens on the doors so flies and bugs (not many) can get inside, but that’s what happens being out in nature. Highly recommend the Sunset Lodge and would stay again!

Booked a hotel with them and canceled one month in advance via an email address I had previously been using to communicate with them. I sent two emails and a message to their phone number via WhatsApp never got a response and then they charge my credit card. Sketchy.

Our stay at Atitlán Sunset Lodge was simply perfect. The room was cozy, comfortable, and offered the most breathtaking views over the lake — waking up to that view was magical. The food deserves a special mention: it was easily some of the best we had during our entire trip through Guatemala. Everything was freshly prepared by their own talented cook, and you could taste the love in every bite. The lakeside jacuzzi was another highlight — warm, relaxing, and the perfect spot to unwind while soaking in the stunning scenery. The host was incredibly friendly and welcoming, even going the extra mile (literally!) by giving us a boat ride to the next village. It made us feel right at home and truly cared for. And to top it all off, the price was more than fair — honestly, for what we got, it felt like an absolute steal. If you're visiting Lake Atitlán, staying here is a must. We can't recommend it highly enough!
