Who doesn't love a good local bakery? We were happy to take a mid-afternoon break here while walking around Rockland for a sugar and caffeine fix.
The older woman working the counter ("Tigers forever!") was absolutely lovely; she was bubbly, engaging, informative, and kind. We asked her a slew of questions and she excitedly and happily answered all of them. I don't know how it is for other people, but this sort of genuinely exceptional customer service makes me want to spend more money. So while we originally went in for A sweet, we walked out with MANY sweets. And the price? SO LOW. Our entire bill came to around $7.
What did we try?
- Cardamom cookie: my friend's choice, and it was delicious. Soft, dense, and chewy like a molasses cookie, but with the pleasant presence of cardamom instead.
- A raspberry thumbprint cookie: these weren't available when we arrived, but the awesome woman told us she had some hiding in the back that she'd sell us. Thumbprint cookies can be so hit or miss, but these were perfection. A buttery, pillowy, soft sugar cookie with a thick glob of raspberry jam, and large crystals of sugar sprinkled on top. The flavors, the textures - I should have bought a dozen.
- A layered Spumoni brownie/bar: I also regret not buying more of these. The pistachio, cherry, and chocolate flavors were just on point. This was an unexpected treat!
- Rum balls: not quite as strong as they were advertised to us, but still good (reminded me of a dense, fudge-like chocolate Munchkin®' from Dunkin's).
- And something lemony I can't remember, because we inhaled it so quickly (it was that delicious)
Unlike others, when we arrived (it was close to 4pm on a Saturday right before Christmas) there was plenty available still for purchase. The breads on the wall behind the cash register were beautiful works of art, and I would absolutely love to come back here sometime to try their quiches!
