There's so much to love about Atomic Burger. By far and away the best burger joint in Oxford (GBK hardly offers much competition), it's the perfect place for a chilled supper or for a post-drinking lunch (when I can out-eat a liger). Very much in the diner mould, the restaurant is covered in sci-fi and cult paraphenalia from the 50s-90s (Batman, Alien, mogwai...) and features a videoloop showing various programme introductions (Bananaman, Quantum Leap...). It's a really quirky setting.
Atomic Burger does both American-style breakfast and a full burger menu. The breakfast isn't bad - the only place I know of in Oxford which does American breakfast - and fairly reasonably priced (£5 for a pancake stack, which compares favourably to somewhere such as Balans). Bottomless coffee is also on offer.
The burgers are where the place really shines. Beef, chicken, and veggie patties are offered (I've been told by my veggie friends that the non-meat option is excellent) to go with a selection of US-influenced burgers named after filmstars. I was a bit a sad when they took away some of their more Mediterranean ingredients, but the current selection offers 21 different burgers and a choose-your-own option as well as hot-dogs and non-burgery items. Each burger comes with one side - the chilli and garlic fries are awesome, and the caesar salad is pretty tasty too - with the prices ranging from £6.75-£9, it's a steal. Now, for the big option: for £5, you can 'Go Atomic', netting you a double patty burger and three sides. Honestly, there is no better post-Camera-and-5-vodka-Red-Bull remedy. Lastly, there's the Godzilla Burger challenge: triple patty burger with bacon, cheese and scotch bonnet chilli sauce and three sets of chilli-garlic fries: success will see you immortalised on the wall of fame, failure on that of shame. I never did get to try it, but I did try some of the scotch bonnet sauce: it's actually quite tasty, not just outright hot. Then the burn comes on. Warning: do not go to the gym after eating. You will regret it.
In absolute terms, this place isn't as good as, say Hache (although it's far superior to GBK and [insert Generic burger chain here]) and is on par with Byron. However, it's just such unbridled FUN. I don't care how unrefined it is, the staff are absolutely lovely (oh, how I miss you Atomic Burger girl) and joke around a lot with you, the legion of collectable toys smile upon you as you eat, you get cool bendy straws with your drinks, and you can get popping candy in your milkshake. I try to go every time I go back to Oxford, because I just can't help but feel happy there. FIngers crossed for the London branch....
