My New Zealand North Island Road Trip Itinerary

"I stayed at The Attic Backpackers in Auckland and found it a fun, budget-friendly option in the city center: voted the city’s most popular hostel for several years, it offers private rooms and dorms, a well-equipped kitchen, and an active common room that’s great for meeting other travelers." - Matthew Kepnes

The 5 Best Hostels in Auckland (Updated 2025)

"Located on Wellesley Street in the center of town, I found The Attic Backpackers to be a top-floor, top-notch hostel (voted best hostel in Auckland four years in a row) with an excellent location near the Sky Tower, a short walk from the main bus station and next to an affordable food court; it features a covered rooftop terrace for views and meeting people, a kitchen, and dorms with basic metal bunks that lack curtains but have thick mattresses so you can still get a good night's sleep." - Matthew Kepnes

I had a really good stay at Attic Backpackers. The kitchen is big, clean, and well organised, which makes cooking easy even when there are several people around. The rooms are spacious, with comfortable beds and pillows, something you do not always find in hostels and definitely appreciated after a long day out. The common areas are great. There are large indoor lounges and an outdoor space as well, with plenty of comfy sofas and lots of board games. It is easy to relax, hang out, or meet people without feeling crowded. Bathrooms were always clean and spacious during my stay. Towels are not included and have an extra cost, but you can just bring your own if you prefer. They also provide good information about tours and local activities, which is helpful if you are still planning what to do around Queenstown. I arrived after hours and the check in was very straightforward. They send you a clear email with all the instructions, so there is no stress at all if you get in late. Overall, it is a solid, comfortable hostel with good vibes, clean spaces, and everything you actually need for a good stay.

The Attic in Auckland was exactly the kind of chill spot you hope for. The kitchen was spacious enough to cook without feeling like you’re playing human Tetris, and the lounge and TV room were ridiculously comfy, basically designed for maximum couch-potato efficiency. The rooms were clean, cozy, and perfect for a solid night’s sleep. Staff were laid-back, friendly, and on top of everything without making a fuss, the rare combo of “relaxed but reliable.”What really stood out was the little touches and attention to detail: guides, lists, and tips for the best spots in Auckland everywhere you looked. You could feel they genuinely cared about making your stay smooth and fun. Not flashy or over-the-top, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want: a comfy place with smart touches, thoughtful vibes, and zero stress. The Attic nails it: a cozy, well-run hideout in the city, and honestly, kind of hard to leave.

You can't beat the location, but I will be honest that I am glad this was only a one night stint for me. The place felt like a prison, so the rooms can feel stuffy at times. You don't have a locker (there is a separate area with small lockers you can store your valuables, so good luck securing your laptop). All in all, in comparison to other places I've stayed at, this place is less homely. I will say I am impressed with how they converted the 4th floor into a hostel, though.

Really great Service. The best hostel I went to in auckland! The bathroom was a bit dirty, but its ok, because you cant keep a place clean all the time, when there are always people. Can only recommend it as a backpacker!

5 stars for great service! My son stayed at Attic a few months ago and discovered when he was at the airport leaving to go home that he'd left his iPad at the hostel. The staff at Attic said they would gladly keep it safe until he could pick it up. Fast forward a few months and I've arrived in New Zealand, phoned Attic, and spoken to Patrick and said he would send it down to me at the other end of the country. I wanted to pay for the cost but he said no, it was all part of his commitment to taking care of those who stay at Attic. I just received the tablet, securely wrapped in bubble wrap, with a friendly and encouraging note for my son. I am so impressed with the integrity and effort that was shown by the folks at Attic. Well done!

Hostel is clean, well organized and the staff is lovely. And yet it wasn't something for me, which surprised me. I didn't feel connected with the people and I didn't like the rooms. But that doesn't mean it's not a good hostel. Just not a good fit for me perhaps? On the good side, they clearly put in effort in maintenance and people working there were also helpful whenever I needed something. Great job! The kitchen area is amazing for putting up food and you got everything at your hand. Bathrooms and showers stayed clean and it was a pleasant experience all together. On the flipside, I found it that it was difficult to connect with the people in the hostel, and I think it's for two reasons. The hostel had a lot of people staying and it creates this busy atmosphere where everyone minds their own business. And secondly, there were mostly young people, most who came in groups and through a program to work in NZ. I had a hard time finding time, place and resonance with the people around and I think the environment & people there play a big part for this. About the bedrooms. I didn't like the loud fans blowing and that you had to have the window open (to change air), there was a lot of noise coming from outside. It was not a place to rest & unwind for me. I would have liked something to organize my stuff to near the bed, but there was nothing. I also didn't like the no curtains setup. Outside all these points, the rooms were tidy and well taken care of, and I'm happy for that. All in all I think most people will enjoy this place, but it was not a good fit for me. I was looking for a more settled and relaxed feeling, connecting with the people and having a place to unwind when I need it.

This place is a vibe and experience. It's very communal. Everyone smiles at eachother, with kind offers to share food, stories and good conversation. This is a Hostile, worth all the few pennies they ask for. Located on the heart of Auckland. Lots to do without walking more than 2 or 3 mins max. I will be back here for sure. See you soon Attic Owls. (Staff)

Really enjoyed my stay here! The hostel was clean, comfortable, and well looked after. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, always ready to help out with anything. The location was perfect, and it had a great atmosphere where I met some really nice people. I would definitely come back and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great place to stay.
