How to Visit Québec City on a Budget in 2025

"I bought a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone from Au 1884 on Dufferin Terrace and found it to be a delightful summer treat while watching street performers on the boardwalk." - Matthew Kepnes

The place is understaffed and it takes very long time to order and collect it. There are only two people working on scene and considering that it can get really crowded, it is not enough. Just to have a simple ice cream from the machine, you need to wait for 15 minutes.

I had an enthusiastic staff taking my order, and this place is great for quick snacks. I got salad for $6, americano $3, cocoa $6, croissant $8, gelato $5 and ice cream $6, so overall was almost $40, but worth the experience :)

I waited in line for 15 minutes to get an ice cream, only to be told at the counter that I first needed to line up at a completely different spot—the coffee sales point—to place and pay for my order. Then I had to return to the original line with the receipt to finally receive the ice cream. This process very confusing, especially with kids eagerly waiting and not understanding the delay. The lack of clear communication and customer consideration made the whole experience frustrating and unnecessarily complicated. Disappointed.

I was really disappointed with this cafe. The staff seemed uninterested and it took forever to get anyone’s attention. And when i asked the staff a question in English they seemed uninterested and disrespectful to me. Definitely won’t be coming back

"Au 1884 is an absolute gem, exuding delightful charm in every corner. Situated next to the iconic Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, it occupies a coveted spot on the picturesque Dufferin Terrace. This enchanting establishment invites you on a culinary adventure, treating your taste buds to a splendid range of delectable delights. From mouthwatering sandwiches and tantalizing snacks to invigorating hot and cold beverages, their menu is a testament to culinary craftsmanship. Moreover, their alluring assortment of maple products and delightful array of gelato add an extra touch of indulgence. During our visit, we simply couldn't resist the allure of the captivating flavors beckoning from their gelato selection. The combination of salted caramel, coffee, and hazelnut, lovingly nestled in a perfectly crafted waffle cone, created a symphony of taste that transported us to a realm of pure bliss. The attention to detail extended even to their scoops, with options available in various sizes, catering to all preferences. Relishing these exquisite treats while soaking in the breathtaking view from their vantage point was nothing short of a divine experience. It felt like stumbling upon an unexpected gift, a genuine blessing in disguise." Recommended!!!

Great explanation of Gelato vs ice cream by the nice barista who previously worked at a gelato maker. Smooth and tasty flavors. Small $5.00, medium $6.50, large $8.00. large has 3 flavors. Salted caramel, strawberry, mango were very good. I wish I could try them all. Great service, professional and polite. English speaking is not a problem which is great for us tourist.

Cute little eatery in Quebec City, right behind Chateau Frontenac. Prices are decent and the personnel is approachable. The place opens late compared to other spots around this touristic place. There’s no free parking in sight, but paid parking available on the streets.

Had a lunch here while walking by the chateau. The sandwich I had was ok, ham and cheese on about 6” of baguette. Had the option of warming it, and should have done that. Nothing remarkable, but worked in a pinch. The strawberry lemonade was quite good.

Yelp
SOFT SERVE ICE CREAM WAS NOT GOOD In the shadow of Chateau Frontenac, Au 1884 is a snack bar in the Princess Louise kiosk on Dufferin Terrace. It is a convenient place to grab a bite while enjoying the incredible view of the St. Lawrence River. Its menu has a little bit of everything like grilled cheese sandwiches, ice cream, coffee and other snacks. Service was friendly. Some tables outside. We had the chocolate vanilla twist soft serve (medium $5.75 CAD). It was not good - an odd icy texture and very little flavor.
