Au Chapeau Rouge

We ate here with a group and had a great evening! The dishes are amazing and it’s nice that here are some interesting choices on the menu like Omellete Norvegienne. My favorite dish was the lemon dessert. Dietary wishes such as nut allergy were also handled well. The service was outstanding as well: when the dishes were served, they were brought to the table with a covering and they were all revealed at once! The only caveat: If you are a vegetarian or with a group of vegetarians, this restaurant might not be the best choice. They will adjust the dishes to be vegetarian if you ask, but there are very few vegetarian options on the menu.

We ate here in 2012 and again, twice, in July of 2014. Absolutely excellent - the presentation, the menu choices, the food preparation and the service. You can either have your meal indoors or on the sidewalk. Whether an entrecote or a poached fish, you will not go wrong, Save room for the phenomenal desserts, with their 'caramel string', launched from an almond, reaching towards the ceiling! English is spoken by the owners and the wait staff.

Honestly terrible food. I never leave a 1 star review but I could barley eat my food, extremely unflavored and the fish had a sour taste. The waitress was very rude and nobody at our table enjoyed any of their meal. Very overpriced.

Good service but a bit overpriced We had travelled around la Loire for some days already and tried new restaurants with the help of the Google Rating system. We had not been disappointed until we came to Au Chapeau Rouge. Service was kind and welcoming, but the food was not up to the expectations that such pricey menu generated.

Amazing dinner last night from the welcome, the service effective and friendly, the quality of the food and in particular the amazing filet mignon - simply succulent. Great restaurant at a very reasonable price.

Au Chapeau Rouge was recommended by a local, and we were not disappointed. Wonderfully situated in the corner of the square a bit secluded. You can sit inside i a classically decorated dinning room or outside under the awnings. First of all the service was polite and courteous and made us feel very welcome. The food was classic french nouvelle cuisine and top notch. Great presentations and timed just right. My wife and i ended up taking a detour, coming back here at the end of our trip round france,. That's how good this was.

Wonderful food, attention to detail from first course to last finishing with the hand made candies served with the coffee. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Absolutely amazing food! Bumped into this place by chance during our visit to Chinon and the food was amazing. The chocolate ganache desert gave me goose bumps-it was that good! Highily reccomend!

It is closed. It was ok when it was open. Sorry to see it go. They tended to have lots of seafood but there is a better seafood restaurant in town.

Love this place!! Great food + wine + service + vibe + ambiance + location. It was recommend by our Airbnb host as a traditional French gastronomy. And it's probably the most popular fine dining in town as it was full on a Sunday. The home made foei gras with dried pear was divine! Smooth, salty, sweet, fatty but not too much. And I could keep eating it with the fresh bread. Lamb was unfortunately not a highlight because I was spoiled by another better lamb dish I had in Paris. The fish with red wine and mushroom sauce was a nice surprise. The baked Alaska is highly recommended because they light it up on fire in front of you. The chocolate mouse was heavenly. They have Chinon wines which means they are all pretty good. And no you can not choose where you can sit. Service was just perfect like many other French places.

We booked one month in advance and we were excited to go there. They fulfilled all our whishes. The lobster was fantastic as well as the service. Do not miss this.

I had the fish of the day for dinner and the flavors were excellent. The wine sauce complimented the fish. After dinner we opted for the cheese cart to be brought to our table. I made my selections, was very happy with them, and then I saw.... A dead mosquito smushed on one of the cheese slices. Yep. Lost the appetite there. Guess I'll have to examine all of my cheeses from now on. Staff wise, attentive and very friendly. They even provided English menus! Definitely a place you should make reservations for - we saw a couple get turned away. Prices were very much reasonable.

We had a wonderful dinner at this restaurant. Service was great, food was wonderful, and they provided a full 3 course children's dinner to our almost 10 year old son. Though it was 5 weeks ago we still recall the strawberry sampler desert.

If you're prepared to have a perfectly French and classically long meal that will engage and diversify your palette, this is the place. Try one of the menus, though they seem expensive at first glance, they are an amazing deal for the quality and a great way to try new food.
