The 5 Best Hostels in Montreal (Updated 2025)

"I found this well-situated hostel very convenient (just a two-minute walk to the metro that goes straight to Old Montreal) with spotless dorms and private rooms that are clean and comfortable, plus co-working spaces if you need to work. The common room has a pool table, the large kitchen is stocked with basics, and there's a café, bar, and free breakfast daily; they also organize lots of activities like bike tours, walks, pub crawls, and poutine tastings. The bunks are basic and lack curtains, but the mattresses are decent — overall a reliable, activity-filled option and one of my top picks." - Matthew Kepnes

I had a very pleasant stay at Hostel Saintlo during my two nights in Montreal. The room and bedding were clean and fresh, which made for a comfortable rest. The kitchen was well equipped and easy to use, which was a big plus. One of the highlights was the breakfast – they served amazing real Montreal bagels, such a nice local touch! The location is also excellent, within easy walking distance to downtown, which made exploring the city super convenient. Overall, a great hostel experience with everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Highly recommend!

Fantastic hostel, lovely staff greeted me for check-in and explained everything clearly. The room is comfortable, a little small (I had a large suitcase) but there's plenty room for everything. I was in an all female room and it was clean, lovely and comfortable to sleep in. The bunk beds are really good. Lovely facilities - extra showers and lounge for studying on different floors. Also, great location! Dislikes: Honestly I liked pretty much everything, the only things I'd say is that the breakfast lacks variety - there was only cereal and bread with spreads. I understand it's included in a very low price but I found the breakfast improvised and not clean.

The reception staff extremely helpful and all happy. The 2 tours were very interesting and lots of humour with no expectation of tips. Room quite hot but bed comfortable. Shared bathroom clean and good showers. A shelf by the mirror would be useful. Perfect location with easy walking to lots of museums, theatres, cafes, etc.

After reading many opinions about Airbnb and how it’s negatively affected the housing market in Montreal, we decided to stay at a local establishment. After considering a hotel, seeing ridiculous prices per night, we decided to stay at a hostel. Saintlo is a small, lovely hostel. The staff is kind and supportive. The check in and check out was easy. The rooms are as pictured online - relatively small, clean. You can stay in shared or private room - the private double room that we stayed in had a bunk bed similar to the shared rooms. The hostel provides free daily breakfast (bagel, fruit, cereal, coffee), and daily group activities. They provide ear plugs, but we didn’t have to use them - noise wasn’t an issue during our stay. It’s easy to get around the city from their location - it’s a 5 min walk to the metro and nearby bus stops. We felt safe and comfortable during our stay. We’re so happy we found Saintlo and highly recommend staying here!

I stayed at Saintlo for one night, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. They kindly provide a luggage storage room as a courtesy, which I really appreciated. However, you need to ask someone to unlock it each time, which can feel a bit uncomfortable each time you need to grab something. A more convenient system would make it even better. That said, my overall experience was great.

Excellently located downtown next to the subway station. Bixi bike pickup/drop off locations all around. Rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. Bathrooms were recently renovated and still very nice. The cleaning staff does an excellent job at coming in every day to freshen up the rooms. Street parking is a bit difficult but there is a 24 hour lot around the corner under the police station. Overall, one of the best hostels I stayed at and would go back again. Highly recommend.

I stayed at Auberge Saintlo Montréal for 4 days during my solo trip, and it was an absolutely lovely experience. The hostel is clean, safe, and in a perfect location — close to the metro, downtown, and walking distance to many attractions. The vibe is friendly and relaxed, ideal for solo travelers like me. The staff were super welcoming and helpful from the moment I arrived. They gave great tips for exploring the city and made me feel at home. The common areas were cozy and great for meeting other travelers. I really appreciated the organized activities and free breakfast, which added so much value to the stay. My room was simple but comfortable, and the shared bathrooms were always clean. I especially loved the relaxed energy of the hostel — it felt like a mix of community and independence. If you're visiting Montréal and want an affordable, social, and well-run place to stay, I definitely recommend Auberge Saintlo. I’d love to come back again!

This was my first time at a hostel, and I could not be more impressed. The rooms are clean and the staff very helpful. My personal favourite is the small patio round the back - many contemplative thoughts had here…

Yelp
Good vibes and good design at this lovely hostel 15 minutes walk from Gare Centrale. This felt like it was gut-renovated to serve as a hostel. All the little modern details are there, including two electrical outlets and a small light at every bunk, privacy curtains, and lots of other nice details. Oh, and they have hooks mounted in the room and bathroom! Lots of them! This feels like a basic detail for hotels and hostels that elevate the experience but seems rare. Something unusual is that they have coworking spaces for general use, but also can be rented for private use for $10/hour. There are 3 rooms and have basic desks, but enough to get work done. One of them has a conference table in the middle if you want to do team meetings and such. The bar downstairs has a nice vibe. The kitchen is also down there and is spacious and has multiple wash stations. Their system for labeling food seems pretty well designed. Wifi speeds have been consistently clocking in at almost 400 Mbps, which is as good as a lot of office buildings. Even 250 Mbps in the basement. The location is near the Metro and the general area feels safe. Staff is courteous and professional. Bathrooms, bunks, and everything is just nicely done. There's a good amount of room under the bunks to stow luggage, including what seems like 'slots' to help the bunkmates carve out their own space. Not sure if each room had this but my room had both a heater and an air conditioner with a thermostat just for our room. The only complaints I have: My room had creaky wooden bunk beds and my bathroom and room doors were also squeaky. The pillows pretty low quality and the mattress is on the somewhat firmer side, which is not what I'm used to. This is what brought down the star rating for me as it affected my sleep somewhat. I get that this is a hostel, so I'm not expecting high-end stuff, but wanted people to know those details.

Yelp
Absolute disappointment. I've stayed at this hostel several times under the HI/Hostelling International association, and have loved it for the community, location, and competitive price, along with the many benefits that come with being an HI member. When booking for my most recently trip back to Montreal, I was floored to see that the price was FIVE times more expensive than what I had last paid for the exact same room, during the exact same time of year. The Saintlo version of this property is essentially identical to the HI version, but with a staggering cost difference. This is a massively unfortunate loss for the travelling community and the budget-conscious locals of Montreal alike. Next time, as much as I love the location and my memories here, I'll be finding someplace else.
