The 5 Best Hostels in Montreal (Updated 2025)

"I found this well-situated hostel very convenient (just a two-minute walk to the metro that goes straight to Old Montreal) with spotless dorms and private rooms that are clean and comfortable, plus co-working spaces if you need to work. The common room has a pool table, the large kitchen is stocked with basics, and there's a café, bar, and free breakfast daily; they also organize lots of activities like bike tours, walks, pub crawls, and poutine tastings. The bunks are basic and lack curtains, but the mattresses are decent — overall a reliable, activity-filled option and one of my top picks." - Matthew Kepnes

This is the best hostel I’ve stayed in. Even after coming home to Toronto, I still miss this lovely hostel. Great vibes. Breakfast is amazing. Great kitchen and great people. Perfect if you wanna meet new friends or if you work remotely this is also a very nice place just to spend a few days in. I would come back again just to stay there. This hostel is my favorite part of Montréal.

An unforgettable birthday experience! I was pleasantly surprised by how lively and welcoming this place is. Thanks to the hostel's activities, I met some incredible people and celebrated my big day in the best way possible. It was a birthday year I will truly never forget!

Can't talk enough about Saintlo hostel - got the best staff, service, people and location. Initially planned for 2 nights but extended by stay to 6 nights. Had the most fun!!! Would visit again someday. Loved the hostel initiative for the weekly activities and the guests also love to engage!

SaintLo is conveniently located and affordable hostel ideal for short stays, with friendly 24/7 staff and thoughtful amenities that make it easy to settle in. However, the space and maintenance could use improvement. Pros: - Location: Excellent — close to main attractions, grocery store, restaurants, and public transportation. - Price: Budget-friendly and great value for a short visit. Amenities: - Free towels included (a nice touch compared to other hostels that charge extra). - Complimentary breakfast featuring fruit, bagels/toast, yogurt, and coffee. - Curtains on each bunk for added privacy. - Comfortable beds and well-regulated room temperature. - Friendly staff available 24/7 for assistance. Cons: - Rooms are quite small, even by dorm standards — not much space for luggage or movement. - Ongoing construction on the floor made midday rest impossible during weekdays. - Building shows its age — visible grime and cracks if you look closely. - Towels, though free, didn’t smell very clean. - Unsecured Wi-Fi network — I chose to avoid using it for privacy reasons. SaintLo is a decent accommodation choice for travelers who prioritize affordability, location, and friendly service over spaciousness and modern finishes. Comfortable for a few nights, but not ideal if you plan to spend much time indoors during the day.

Had the loveliest time here! The staff were all so nice and welcoming, I’d had a few bad hostel experiences recently and this one absolutely restored my faith in hostels! Very clean and in a great location, I arrived early but was allowed to leave my bags and even have breakfast! The staff created a welcoming atmosphere at the bar which made it easy to meet new people and the karaoke night was so much fun, would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in Montréal! Special shout out to the strawberry and chocolate bagels

Everything you hope for and a bit more, well worth my time and money😊 The quality and the consideration of the layout and facilities was exactly what I'd hope for in a hostel. To put Auberge Saintlo above the average, they had all clean and well maintained general items, such as cutlery, crockery and cookware, as well as a wonderful towel and linen service which kept everyone well supplied. Also the cleaning staff came through daily and did a wonderful job of keeping our room tidy between guests.

I had an absolutely wonderful stay, the rooms were clean and it was pretty easy to navigate. The spot itself is quite pleasant as well, and the curtains on the bed were really good because they were allowing for near complete darkness, which is personally really important for my quality of sleep. I stayed in four person all female room. Overall, the atmosphere was quite welcoming. And I really enjoyed it. The only thing that I would mention is that for the lockers that are within the room you need to bring your own locks, i have not stayed in enough of similar places to know if this is usual, but if security is a concern, it's something to keep in mind. I just used it without and had no issues.

I had a very pleasant stay at Hostel Saintlo during my two nights in Montreal. The room and bedding were clean and fresh, which made for a comfortable rest. The kitchen was well equipped and easy to use, which was a big plus. One of the highlights was the breakfast – they served amazing real Montreal bagels, such a nice local touch! The location is also excellent, within easy walking distance to downtown, which made exploring the city super convenient. Overall, a great hostel experience with everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Good vibes and good design at this lovely hostel 15 minutes walk from Gare Centrale. This felt like it was gut-renovated to serve as a hostel. All the little modern details are there, including two electrical outlets and a small light at every bunk, privacy curtains, and lots of other nice details. Oh, and they have hooks mounted in the room and bathroom! Lots of them! This feels like a basic detail for hotels and hostels that elevate the experience but seems rare. Something unusual is that they have coworking spaces for general use, but also can be rented for private use for $10/hour. There are 3 rooms and have basic desks, but enough to get work done. One of them has a conference table in the middle if you want to do team meetings and such. The bar downstairs has a nice vibe. The kitchen is also down there and is spacious and has multiple wash stations. Their system for labeling food seems pretty well designed. Wifi speeds have been consistently clocking in at almost 400 Mbps, which is as good as a lot of office buildings. Even 250 Mbps in the basement. The location is near the Metro and the general area feels safe. Staff is courteous and professional. Bathrooms, bunks, and everything is just nicely done. There's a good amount of room under the bunks to stow luggage, including what seems like 'slots' to help the bunkmates carve out their own space. Not sure if each room had this but my room had both a heater and an air conditioner with a thermostat just for our room. The only complaints I have: My room had creaky wooden bunk beds and my bathroom and room doors were also squeaky. The pillows pretty low quality and the mattress is on the somewhat firmer side, which is not what I'm used to. This is what brought down the star rating for me as it affected my sleep somewhat. I get that this is a hostel, so I'm not expecting high-end stuff, but wanted people to know those details.

Yelp
Absolute disappointment. I've stayed at this hostel several times under the HI/Hostelling International association, and have loved it for the community, location, and competitive price, along with the many benefits that come with being an HI member. When booking for my most recently trip back to Montreal, I was floored to see that the price was FIVE times more expensive than what I had last paid for the exact same room, during the exact same time of year. The Saintlo version of this property is essentially identical to the HI version, but with a staggering cost difference. This is a massively unfortunate loss for the travelling community and the budget-conscious locals of Montreal alike. Next time, as much as I love the location and my memories here, I'll be finding someplace else.
