The outside service counter has a pretty straightforward menu and you order at the counter, sit at a table with a number and they bring the food. It's not fancy, but the fish is absolutely delicious and if you have a chance and at least one other person, I highly recommend the whole grilled red snapper. It is amazing. They cooked it to perfection. Just enough so that it was cooked through, but still tender, flaky, and juicy through and the seasonings were perfect. Topped with a few fresh aromatics, it was amazing to just eat through. The flesh on the bones is always more succulent, and the skin was crisp. Excellent with a side of fries and a salad and we had more than enough for dinner for two. Loved this so much and it was so fresh.

Absolutely! Here’s a positive review for the Auckland Fish Market: 5 stars The Auckland Fish Market is a must-visit for any seafood lover! Located near the water, it has an awesome mix of 8 diverse eateries, all offering fresh, flavorful dishes—from sushi and oysters to fish & chips and seafood platters. There’s truly something for every palate, and the quality is consistently excellent. Beyond the food, there's a lovely central courtyard that makes it a great place to relax with friends or family. It has a fun, lively atmosphere without being overwhelming, and the indoor-outdoor layout gives it a laid-back coastal vibe. What sets this place apart is the seafood market itself—packed with an impressive variety of fresh seafood to take home. Whether you're after prawns, mussels, salmon, or something more adventurous, it’s all there, and super fresh. Perfect for a casual lunch, a special dinner, or just browsing the seafood selection—Auckland Fish Market hits the mark for quality, variety, and atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Delicious! I recommend the Lobster roll is a good taste. Grilled fish also nice! Here is more and more restaurants and takeaway food, wine and beer, coffee or sofe drinks.

Google
Much smaller than the fish market in Sydney. Don’t come before 11 unless you are buying fresh fish. All of the restaurants open at 11 - before that the only thing open is a single fish monger. Overall a decent place to get fish and chips but not much else.

Google
The food there is absolutely amazing, especially the grill stall, easily the best salmon steak I ever had, the refreshness of the fish, the perfect grill for only 18nzd. Hands down.

The food here is always great, with plenty of options, whether you’re in the mood for seafood, meat, or vegetarian cuisine. But my favorite part? The live music! Last time, we had the pleasure of listening to an amazing duo with incredible voices, it truly made the experience unforgettable. Highly recommend 👌

Google
A nice place to grab a quick lunch. They have many restaurants and live band. There is also a big screen tuned to various sports.

If you want freshest seafood, this is the place to be in Auckland. Arrive 10 minutes before 11:00 am. That is when most restaurants open.

Yelp
One of our Australia highlights was eating at their Fish Market. 5 star Yelp review to come. Quality/Quantity - Sadly only one "real" fish market, see pictures. This place is more like a seafood food court. 8 eateries/restaurants, see pictures. We were so disappointed that we decided to not eat here. I was really looking forward to eating some fresh NZ mussels, but the selection here just did not "wow" me. Atmosphere - Small eatery. Parking available. Open 7 days a week 6am to 10:30pm, and on weekends from 7am to 10:30pm. Service - N/A. Price - N/A, see pictures and menus. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1904.

Yelp
Good prices and lovely staff. The fileting workers are fast and our snapper was done really well. They've got some amusing signs around. Absolutely wonderful prices on green lip mussels and they had sushi grade tuna and salmon for really reasonable prices!

Yelp
On a day exploring the waterfront and the new Wynyard Quarter, I found Auckland Fish Market with inviting murals of fish and surrounded by green. The place serves as a fish market for all manner of seafood, whole or cut to order. Throughout there are many little stalls with places to eat and drink as well - it feels like a farmers market. I hadn't planned on eating here, but couldn't resist when I saw the amazing food and happy families. Besides the interior area, they have an open air covered courtyard with other food and drink choices. I ordered the fish platter of the day at Market Galley which was a reasonable price for multiple panned fried pieces plus a Greek salad. The cashier was very friendly and welcoming. I got my buzzer and looked for a table while waiting. A live guitarist was playing happy tunes next to The Wreck Bar, styled like an old English pub. They had excellent beer on tap - I got a Sawmill XPA which became a favorite brewery on this visit. Listing to local music while enjoying fresh caught fish and a local beer - you can't do better. It's worth the visit.

Yelp
This isn't the best fish market ever, but it's a great place to get some tasty lunch. The prices are fair and the workers are friendly. I had to get me a lobster roll from Lobster & Tap (it was damn delicious). You can buy some fresh fish from one of the vendors, and bring it over to another to cook it up. While I was there, they were playing the NBA finals on a big projector screen. Don't skip out on the Auckland Fish Market if you're in the area!

Yelp
Huge modern fish market with lots of ethnic seafood restaurants in front. They were upscale with waitress service. We passed Italian, Middle Eastern, Greek ... There is a Patfield seafood cooking school here that advertises daily classes. It is a holiday week & was. Loser. We walked into the big market filled with cases and cases of the freshest most beautiful seafood. Many were purchasing fresh fish to take home here. There was indoor and outdoor seating at the food hall. Mike got a lobster roll with a cold beer and I got a wine with oysters and green lipped mussel in a creamy white wine sauce. We were in seafood heaven. Lunch was reasonably priced and outrageously delicious!

Yelp
I absolutely love seafood. Oysters, mussels, prawns, hoki, kina, gurnard, crayfish, whitebait, clams, flounder, scallops, tuna, snapper, paua - you name it. I would eat seafood for every meal if I could... maybe just not for dessert as that is reserved for my other favourite food - chocolate. So, when I was invited to the official opening party of the Auckland Fish Market last Monday, I was super excited! Most of you will already know, but for the last nine months', the Auckland Fish Market in Wynyard Quarter has undergone renovations, to include eight new eateries, a courtyard bar, a world class fishmonger - Sanford & Sons and seating for 400 inside and out, making it an ideal dining destination for Aucklanders and for tourists alike. The newly refurbished Auckland Fish Market is a celebration of New Zealand seafood - in fact it sells the widest range of the freshest seafood available, straight from the boats to your dinner table. At the opening party of the Auckland Fish Market, we sampled freshly shucked TeKouma Bay oysters, fish sliders from Market Galley, swordfish, green papaya salad from Tiki Thai, Poke Bowls from Ika Bowl and gelato from Little Lato. We later bought bao from Azabu - highly recommend the pork belly! Also tried an Aperol Spritz for the first time (hello, new favourite cocktail). These (and many other delicious drink offerings) were available from The Wreck, their new courtyard bar. Here is the latest on the newest food offerings at the Auckland Fish Market: Azabu - Serving sublime sushi and sashimi, plus other Asian-style classics like dumplings, bao, tempura and wontons. Billypot - Taking on the traditional mussel and frites concept and making it more kiwi. The hero dish is mussels, coming in three flavours - one traditional herb, one garlic and one white wine. You will also find oysters, crayfish, whitebait and paua fritters on the menu. Mar and Tierra - Sea & Land is the literal translation for this Southern American-inspired restuarant where you will find dishes such as plancha prawns, ceviche and arepas. Good Karma Truck - Head here for coffee to start your day, otherwise they offer tea, iced drinks, smoothies and dessert - they serve Little Lato gelato and sweet treats! Market Galley - East meets west, with old favourites and future classics, such as fish and chips and wok-fried dishes - perfect for sharing with the family. Super Pizza - As the name suggests, you guessed it, PIZZA! Deliciously wood-fired pizzas - my pick is their Margherita or Pepperoni. Tiki Thai - With the same owner as Asian-fusion eatery Tok Tok, you know this place will be a winner! A smallish menu consisting of Thai-inspired dishes with bold flavours, like Thai trevally tacos, eggplant chips, crispy pork belly and prawn laksa. Ika Bowl - Polynesian Poke Bar serving seafood, complemented with the freshest New Zealand produce. Highly recommend the Fiery Irie bowl. I am so excited about the newly opened Auckland Fish Market and all that it has to offer. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Yelp
Smoked salmon! What more do I need to say? OK, how about "smoked swordfish"! Okay, now do I have your attention? So if you're strolling through the Wynyard Quarter, be sure to check out the Auckland Fish Market. It's a fairly small fish market, but they do carry some of the largest pieces of seafood around. Some of the largest snapper, shrimp, and crayfish I've ever seen! You need some king fish, mussels, or salmon, they've got it! You need your fresh fish filleted, they'll do it for you! Did you need pasta for your seafood, veggies, or sauces? They've got a local variety. Whatever ingredient you need, they probably have it. Inside or outside the market, there are a few places you can eat as well. Sit outside in their inner courtyard area and share a glass of wine. You can even take a seafood class, take a tour of the market, or check out their early morning fish auction. Something I've yet to wake up for. I believe the fish arrive at 5am, so it's best you arrive early if you're gonna actually participate in the auction. But I gotta say, the highlight for me was the "smoked" fish section. I wanted to try every piece of fish they had. I asked the staff about the process, and they said they woodchip-smoke the fish for at least six hours, and onsite in their own smokehouse. They start smoking on Wednesdays, so it's best to find the good stuff days after. In other words, I was expecting to pick up some smoked swordfish on a Tuesday, only they ran out. Drats!

Yelp
As a North American and intolerant to most seafood, I quite enjoyed the industrial looking fish market. The smell of fish is pungent but not overwhelming. A delicate balance! I first ordered this sushi and sashimi plate from Azabu which is plated wonderfully (pictured below). In NZ dollars it was $35, and with the exchange rate, in American dollars it was only $20! I later ordered kombucha on tap from Good Karma. It tasted a bit lighter than the kombucha from America and was less fizzy. Depending on preference, you may or may not like it. Lastly, we ordered the classic fish and chips (not pictured) from Market Galley. It was surprisingly delicate to chew into because the fish was intact and soft. The bonus was the sauce which was superb. You'll have to try it to understand! While we only purchased a few items, the rest of the shops sold a mixture of seafood. Some had fusion cuisines like ceviche and tiradito dishes.

Yelp
We went to have Fish and chips and burger and chips from the fish market. the quality seems to have deteriorated and the quantity has also decreased. the chips were reheated and not nice and the fish was average. Disappointing as we have had amazing fish and chips from here before. Hopefully this is temporary but we won't be coming back to try again. Unfortunate as we wanted to support the local businesses but sadly disappointed.

Yelp
You don't have the choices you did in years past, that's for sure, but you can buy some fresh caught seafood and bring it home to cook that evening. Prices vary from cheap/reasonable to top prices. Staff are knowledgeable about the provenance, also, so don't be afraid to ask.

Yelp
Good selection of fish and seafood. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Freshly caught, simple preparation, and cooked to order. Couldn't be better!

Yelp
The COVID delivery was not contactless they where not wearing masks or gloves while cooking the calamari was nice but it had an odd aftertaste

Yelp
The fish market is looking great since the refurb. Lots of choice and busy on the Sunday we went. Somewhat let down by the arsey attitude from Azabu staff when we pointed out they had taken our order wrong. It was clear from the way they snatched back the receipt and muttered to each other that they felt the mistake was ours, when it wasn't. Shame as the food was good.

Yelp
Waking up bleary eyed to the beautiful sun but totally lacking energy, it's one of those days where you have to treat yourself to breakfast at your local cafe. I love the pulse of central cafes but it's always a pleasure to head to places out of the rush. The Market Cafe inside the Fish Market is one of those where you are guaranteed great coffee and time out at your own leisure. This breakfast bagel surprised me with generous amount of smoked salmon, tomato relish and mayo. While the side salad was doused in sauce, the leaves were still lively and crisped in my mouth. Not exactly an eggs benedict on the menu, it was enough to make you think it was with the salmon and poached egg. Everything seemed pretty standard - first egg was perfectly poached, the second was overdone but not enough to get worked up about. The thing that brought this breakfast to life was the smoked salmon - and especially when hot smoked salmon is not normally a preference for me - good job Auckland Fish Market!

Yelp
Visiting from Tennessee--this was the ONLY place in New Zealand that we visited 4 times! (2 times for sushi lunch, once for drinks, once for breakfast.) I grew up near New York City and have lived in Miami Beach and Los Angeles as well, so I know what 'fresh' is. But as a couple living in East TN for the last however many years, my boyfriend and I are just not used to walking into a local fish market where the fish was caught the very same day. I know they farm fish in New Zealand as well, and chances are the salmon sashimi we ate was farmed, but it was still fresh and delicious. And can you beat the price? Let me rephrase that, you cannot beat the price. The sushi rolls and sashimi we got would have cost at least double where we live. We loved the vibe of this area too. Inside the actual fish market--it's so easy to navigate through the restaurant portions, dry goods areas and the fish display sections. Pick and choose what you like best--order cooked items off a menu with table service or walk up to the counter and serve yourself... The Auckland Fish Market was a short, beautiful walk across a small draw bridge from our hotel in Princes Wharf. We enjoyed the views of the city in both directions. And the variety of food and drink options in this area is sure to please all palettes. Something to note--there is beautiful wall art along the way I'd recommend taking at least a moment to admire. One very special thing about Auckland is--wherever they might be doing construction or have built something that may not be the most eye pleasing (like garages and huge storage tanks)--they find a way to beautify.

Yelp
Fresh Fish fillets, whole fish, prawns, oysters, scallops, lobsters, if you are after fresh fish and seafood then this is the place to head to. You can either buy fish to take home and also grab some other groceries while you are there. They sell whole fish which can be filleted or de-scaled, cleaned and left whole. Or if you would rather stay here and eat then there are a number of different restaurants that serve up the lovely fresh fish as you like and you can have a wine or beer and listen to some live music (on some days). Its situated in the Wynyard Quarter area so afterwards you can go for a nice walk along the water to burn of the calories from your delicious meal (and wines). This really is a fantastic place to bring friends, family and out of town visitors who love fish and seafood and the location is also easy to get to with plenty of parking in the area.

Yelp
Excellent decor with several different styles of meal to choose from under the one roof. Plenty of pay and display parking right outside

Yelp
I look forward to Sundays as this place have little trays of fresh salmon. Sashimi is the best. Have also tried the fish n chips next door and it's super fresh as well as a great portion. Not too big, just perfect. Definitely worth the money although you'd think it'd be expensive as its super fresh and located in the CBD. Great deal. It's a must visit when in Auckland City on a Sunday :)

Yelp
Was super excited to go here, but was pretty disappointed. This place is good to go to if you're wanting to get fish to cook for dinner, but I wouldn't come here to get oysters. I bought half a dozen oysters and I couldn't get anything to go with it without purchasing it seperately (lemon, etc.). Probably wouldn't come back unless I were with more people. They do have a cute outdoor seating area to sit down and eat.

Yelp
We visited here a few wks ago on a sunny Sunday, thinking this would be a great place to enjoy some fresh food outdoors. Once we eventually managed to grab the attention of a staff member we ordered the deluxe platter $59 and a beer and wine. The platter arrived and it did look pretty good. However there were no sauces or lemon with it, which seems strange for sea food. The food was not very warm and felt like had to rush to eat it before it got cold. There was no flavour to anything, just grease. Could not even taste any salt. The fish was terrible. The prawn skewers and twists were the only somewhat tasty items. The staff are also not very good and don't seem to have any interest. Will not be returning here. Really expected a fish market to know how to cook and serve delicious sea food.

Yelp
Home of the freshest fish in town, apart from catching it yourself. Some weird and wonderful specimens the day I visited. If you're ever up at 5am on weekdays you can wander through the cool store and view the catch before the auctioning starts. One side of the fish market has pre filleted fish, the other sells the whole fish, but offers a free filleting service (this way you get the option to make stock from the leftovers). There's also a selection of smoked salmon which is smoked on the premises. Available plain or flavoured with rubs. I can recommend both types. Also, there's a cafe and grocery/vegetable section to browse through while you're there.

Yelp
Sometimes you visit a place that should be absolutely awesome, but its not. It should be bustling with beautiful people, talking, eating and simply enjoying life. The Auckland Fish Market is this place. Everything here screams social centre 101, yet there is something missing, it is almost as if its got no soul. (Pardon the pun.) The fish is fresh and on ice, the beer is cold and on tap, there is a beautiful and well-stocked deli with plenty of outdoor seating. So why does it not work? There is no vibe. What they need to do is change the menu, get some live music and make it more of a festival, because at the moment it just disappoints. And it only disappoints, because you expect it to be awesome.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
It's a market of fish. All types of fish. Fish you can take home, fish you can eat there. Fish you can throw at a friend, fish a friend can throw at you. Here, the fish is fresh. Some fish markets do not smell so fresh, or look as well presented. They have lots of little samples, so you can walk around the centrepiece and try a whole lot of different types of Fish before choosing what Fish you want to take home. No doubt once the Wynyard Quarter housing development is in place, this market will be a hive of activity, even more so in the weekends - as already people can end up packed in like.. well, sardines. If you like Fish, try the Fish market. Otherwise, get a box of hot chips.

Holly S.

Yelp
This place could be a lot better. I think the previous poster nailed it when he said the place has no soul. We ordered the 'Deluxe Seafood Platter" ($59) and it was everything it said on the menu but nothing more. It was basically an assortment of battered fried seafood, but with NO accompaniments. I had to get up to ask for lemon as it seemed weird to eat a whole lot of fried food without lemon or sauce or anything. It seemed that everything was lacking salt or flavor or maybe there was just no passion in the food. Likewise, the service was weird, they seemed to all be drifting around everywhere but very un attentive, food was plonked down literally from a height, and the waiter did not spend an extra second at our table to check if we had everything (hence I had to get up to ask for lemon). It kinda seemed like everyone who worked there did not give a shi*t.

Yelp
My mother has been taking me to this place for years, although, human nature being fickle, she has recently switched allegiance to Wynard Quarter for it's superior views. We still sometimes make a detour down to the fish market. I have never bought anything to take home and cook, probably because the fish shop smells like you expect a fish shop would and I don't find it does much for my appetite. We do eat at the attached fresh seafood bistro/restaurant sometimes though, and I have found the fresh fish to be delicious and well cooked. I think given the prices (at least $20+ for the fish options to around $100 for crayfish etc) they could give it less of a canteen feel and make it a bit more upmarket.

Gale O.

Yelp
We were taken there by NZ residents. We ate outside, ordered the tasting plate $60. /2. Fish fries, wine, beer excellent. Service adequate and friendly. We had to get up to ask for some mayo or tartar sauce to accompany the fish. Must be a very active place with wine tasting parties, and wholesale fish market full bar. We were there for a late lunch and were satisfied with the food, locale and service. However, neither the food nor the service was anything to rave about.
