Audubon House & Tropical Gardens

Lovely home w/ antiques and Audubon art, cookhouse, restrooms, gardens, etc... The gardens are a sweet little haven out of the sun and craziness with orchids and other flora. The guides were very knowledgeable about it's history & super friendly. It has an amazing gift shop onsite as well!

We had the opportunity to select the Audubon House and Tropical gardens as our wedding ceremony and reception venue this past June. The gardens and historic house were a perfect backdrop to our event. The Audubon staff not only made planning a breeze but helped to facilitate a seamless event. Highly recommend anyone traveling to Key West visit the Audubon House and anyone think about hosting an event consider this beautiful venue.

I felt this place was a more of a historical site than a tropical garden. Learning about the history of the house and the story behind it was nice to learn. It’s cool looking at all the old stuff. The guide was nice and knowledgeable about the history. You get a short background from the guide then you are able to wander the property at your own pace.

Beautiful, well decorated and maintained house with a neat history. The grounds are interesting and maintained for the period it was used. There’s a room decorated on the top floor for those who like maximalism. The gardens are stunning and the gift shop has cool stuff and Audubon art. My favorite house in Key West!

Beautiful house and history of the Geiger legacy and Audubon. Highly recommend. Docent was friendly and informative. One surprise on the top floor is a sensory area. Garden is very pretty!

Beautiful restored house built in 1850s’. A lot of personal artifacts to show that period of time (those furnitures belong to Geiger family show at the top floor) . A lot of Audubon’s works hanging on the wall, the bird room is unique and whimsical, which my kids adored a lot. The detached cookhouse is interesting to see, looks authentic though it’s indeed replica. Scrolling in the tropic garden, while taking photos of the beautiful orchards, or watching the dancing butterflies, made us feel away from the bustle and hustle of Key west. Our tour guide gave us a short introduce and we wandered around for another 1 hour. The gift shop is the prettiest I have ever seen. This is a special place, we love it!

I am not as enthusiastic with this tourist attraction. There is a very sketchy connection to Audubon and the gardens are not special. The house is interesting but does not justify the entrance price. There are some very cool bird paintings for sale which is probably the objective here. The tour guide provided good service in his introduction.

What an absolute gorgeous place for a wedding. We attended a wedding there and it was beautiful, the service was great, the bartenders were great and the food was really good. The key lime pie is excellent!

Awesome guided & self tour of this historic gem! Small fee benefits the upkeep & is worth the stop & walk thru. Extensive family heirlooms still in place. We enjoyed it!

Small, quaint museum. Although, the name is Audubon House, the house actually belonged to Captain Geiger (a well known figure in the Keys). However, the museum houses some of Audubon's famous bird paintings. The Audubon Experience on the third level is a bright, bold, colorful, tropical inspired exhibit paying tribute to Audubon's art. I thought it was pretty unique. The rest of the house has some pretty interesting items from the 19th century. There is a small garden you can walk around - nothing too big. But you might see the two resident cats hanging around. Admission price is about $15; there is a small discount for locals. 4 stars.

Good small fun. Was enjoyable exploring the Geiger family's old house, the gardens, and a fantastic Audubon collection if you're into that sort of thing. A little bit of curious history, a little bit of art. We blew through it in an hour but you could easily spend half the day enjoying the beautiful and quiet grounds. And they've got cats! Two of them so I'm told, though only one made an appearance. There's also a short narration, clean bathrooms, and of course, gift shop.

Beautiful location for special events! We attended the Hill Wedding and could not have been more impressed. The location was beautiful during the day for the ceremony, and as the night fell, it was lit up and amazing. The staff of Audubon as well as the catering and event staff were great! The night went smoothly, the food was delicious, and the DJ was fun! We were allowed to tour the house, which was really cool. I recommend visiting during the day, just to enjoy the property. I do also suggest Key West Villas, they made our stay wonderful.

Interesting stories about the original owner (Geiger), and a beautiful house. At one time the house looked pretty rough, and they were considering tearing it down and building a gas station! Thank goodness they didn't. You start with a 15 minute talk in the house, and then your free to wander in the house, and outside. We sat on the 2nd floor in the rocking chairs, and that was very relaxing. We got there at 10am, and we were the only ones there. Don't miss walking around outside and seeing all the many plants and palm trees.

Probably one of the nicest wedding venues in Key West... plenty of places in Key West have a over-the-top landscaping, but so does Audubon House... plenty of places are organized and prepared to host such events, but so is the Audubon House... Plenty of places have an interesting history, but so does the Audubon House... plenty of places are registered as part of the historical Society, but so is the Audubon House... there are plenty of museums in Key West, but so is the Audubon House... it's kind obvious that a lot of what the Audubon House offers is offered other places as, but few offer all this and more in one venue. In all the years that Marisol and I spent in Key West it surprises me that we never took the time to explore the museum, the Audubon House and stroll the brick paver paths through the gardens. What finally got us here was when we considered it for a wedding destination; for the most part it was just about perfect for us... it can't handle a huge wedding party but could easily handle the size group we had anticipated. We met with one of the representatives who allowed us to tour the grounds on our own including the museum... I found it very amusing that they had fully restored the original outhouse from 1930 with his and her toilets. We decided not to be married here but we were very glad to have visited the grounds. Spend enough time in the lower keys, you'll eventually find yourself on a small key by the name of Geiger key (location of the Geiger Key Marina and Smokehouse) and right by Boca Chica. The Audubon House was originally built by Capt. Geiger and it was his family's home for about 100 years until it was sold to the Wolfson Family; who renamed it in honor of John James Audubon and has been a museum and historical site since 1960. Thanks to Mr. Wolfson to have begun the historical preservation in Key West.

Relaxing 1840s period home and garden.... For $10 admission, it's a relaxing place to get out of the sun and crowds. John James Audubon didn't live here or even work here but this place 'honors' his legacy. The tour is pretty much self guided, but the docent on the first floor of the house gives you a ~10 minute rundown of the house's history and Audubon connection. The cats on the ground are as friendly as the ones in the Hemingway House, so be ready to scratch behind some ears.

Really lovely little spot - not only to get away from crowds/out of the heat, but full of beautiful original Audubon pieces. Though he was only in the Geiger home for a few months, the house itself has a fascinating history and is so interesting to meander through. Dennis (I think that was his name) gave a really thorough and interesting history of the home and then we were free to explore on our own. There are many details to pore over - take your time - and Dennis was available to answer our questions. Then, in the gallery, Mark gave us even more information and answered specific questions about process of making the prints as we browses through an impressive number of first- and second- edition works. I was surprised that many were quite affordable - and they will ship prints home for customers! This is a really neat spot with friendly, knowledgeable staff. Definitely worth an hour of your time.

Thoroughly enjoyed the house and seeing Audobon's art. A real treat for bird lovers and those who like spending time outdoors. The docent was able to answer any questions we had and gave a great history of the house.

Friendly, informative staff. Beautiful house and grounds. Watch for ghosts...a painting on the 3rd floor has eyes that follow you.

Didn't get to go in but did walk around the grounds some which were very pretty. Saw some beautiful orchids and would love to return here again to take a full tour. Lots of trees makes it a nice cooling retreat in the heat of summer as well.

This place was a HUGE disappointment. The house and gardens have virtually no connection to John James Audubon whatsoever. He never lived there. He never even stayed there. This house didn't even exist during the short time he was on the island. While I'm sure the family that lived there had an interesting history, even that was lost on this tour. None of the items displayed were from this home or this family; they are simply random items collected from that time period. Do not waste your time or money.

We had our wedding at the Audubon House this past weekend and it was absolutely everything I would have wished for! Laura, our event coordinator, did an amazing job. It was so easy working with all the vendors even from a distance! I would highly recommend this amazing place! Just beautiful!!

My partner and I went to the Audubon House when we were visiting Key West, and overall, it is a very well-kept museum with friendly volunteer staff. We visit Key West often, and realized we hadn't been to this museum before. The house itself is kept very well, it is completely air-conditioned. That is very important, especially during the summer months where it is very humid. The trick to this museum is that Audubon himself never stayed here. The house was not built during the time he was in the Keys, so this museum is partially about the family who lived here in the 1800s. There is a very big portion of the upstairs that is dedicated to Audubon and what he may have seen and drawn when he was in Key West, though. The gift shop here is really good. They have a lot of prints on sale, but I don't know if that was just a temporary discount or constant. There are lots of good souvenirs that are pricey but also much nicer than regular tourist stuff. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to the Audubon House, and it's located right by Mallory Square, so it was finally good to check out this place after having passed it so many times.

Nicely restored house with many treasures to see. Rare Audubon images collected by wealthy Key West resident. Nice staff. House is furnished to the period with one exhibit room upstairs that was a bit strange. As gardeners, we enjoyed the grounds as well. Nice meditation pond, scattered seating areas among well established tropical plants. This would be a nice shady place to rest while walking around the rest of this part of Key West.

A peaceful slice of culture and history. If you want a few moments out of the hustle and bustle of the average KW day, stop in, slow down and absorb.

This place was great, beautiful house and gardens. The tour was fun and the gift shop had some cool items, would recommend.

We walked past this place for years because I was too cheap to pay the $12 ea. for the tour. Finally loosened up and did it and couldn't be happier. The house was great, the gardens spectacular! Most all of the tour is self guided, but in the first floor of the house, you do get a speil on the family, history, etc that was very interesting. The furniture was not from the family but period-ish and interesting. The courting couch in the parlor was crazy! Knees could not touch! I could not have made it back then. You learn that it's really the Geiger house. Captain Geiger was a ball busting ship captain/wrecker. Audubon just visited the place once. Tons of orchids mounted on the trees. Spectacular crotons, and the pathos was nuclear. What a great place.

The Audubon House was a wedding venue more beautiful than my wildest dreams! When my fiance and I moved to Key West, we decided to get married there but weren't into the beach wedding thing. The lush, tropical setting at the Audubon house was perfect. Laura was incredibly helpful every step of the way. On the day of our wedding, our 70 guests were blown away by how gorgeous the whole setting was. It was pretty hot even for October 10th, so everyone loved cooling off inside the house and greatly enjoyed the provided tour, which I highly recommend whether or not you're getting hitched! We're so happy we chose the Audubon House and so grateful to Laura, Joanna and everyone for their part in our perfect wedding!!!

A TWIST OF HISTORY WITH YOUR KEY WEST COCKTAILS. If you're looking for something non-alcohol related to do in Key West, the Hemingway House is probably your first choice and the Audubon House is another good option. If you're going to Key West on a cruise, the ship will dock by Mallory Square. The Audubon House is only about 2-3 blocks away from the Square, so it's easily walkable. The house has 3 stories. On the first floor, there was an old man named Bob in the sitting room who told us all about the house's original owner and Audubon's association with the family. He also told us the stories behind many of the antiques in the living room and the adjacent dining room. On the second floor, you can sit in rocking chairs on the balconies and see the children's' room and the master bedroom. The third floor has some of Audubon's artwork. The gardens are beautiful. There are lots of orchids, sapodilla trees, jasmine and gardenias. It's shady and charming. The gift shop is absolutely amazing. There are tons of Audubon prints for sale, and you can get them matted and/or framed. There are also all kinds of pretty, unique gifts and cards, mainly bird-related. All in all, Audubon House is a lovely outing.

Definitely a beautiful location in Key West, right near the heart of Old Town and Mallory Square. I only did the garden tour, but there were lots of interesting plants and trees to see. Didn't decide to do the house tour, however. Good garden and small pool/fountain area.

My daughter had her destination wedding at this beautiful place. We live in Boston & she booked it from the website.The majority of our correspondence was done via email, Joanne was always available to assist us. The gardens are beautiful. Lovely! The house isn't huge, but it is very interesting and they keep it very well. It's also great if you love Audubon since the inside is basically covered in his work, although he didn't technically live here, he did paint here quite a bit. It's also the first house to spark the historic home renovations through the whole island which is pretty cool. Great if you like historic homes or Audubon's work.

We had our wedding in Key West, and my photographer and I were scouting locations to do photos at. We approached the Audubon House and they welcomed us in, showed us around and let us take beautiful pictures on their grounds for free! The pictures turned out so wonderful and the people working there (older gentleman and a lady with blonde hair) were very accomadating and lovely. They made my special day even better!

This was very interesting. Lots to see & a lot of info that I didn't know. It is air conditioned which was nice because it was very hot outside the say we visited! The gentleman that meets you at the front was very nice & informative! Well worth the money. You tour the house on your own.

A great way to spend 30-60 minutes, the grounds are beautiful and the house is exquisite. There is plenty of fascinating history of both Key West and Audubon inside. And if you don't feel the entry fee is worth it, you should at least visit the gift shop which has a wide variety of beautiful Audubon themed merchandise.

The home is historically fascinating, the artwork astounding and the docents and the rest of the folks running the site are helpful, interested And interesting. Decent gift shop, too.

John James Audubon, the world-renowned bird guy, visited the Florida Keys and the Dry Tortugas for roughly six weeks in 1832. During that time, he spotted and sketched 18 new birds for his "Birds of America" folio. One thing he didn't do during his time in Florida was live in this house. He stayed next door for a bit, and from afar, admired the gardens of this home enough to ask the owner, Captain John H. Geiger, if he could use the grounds as his studio. But aside from that, this house has very little to do with Audubon. So it's perhaps a bit misleading to call this the "Audubon House." That said, it's still a nice little piece of history, complete with quick guided tours and original Audubon prints that are available for purchase in the adjoining gallery.

I was very disappointed by this place. I love Audubon's artwork and I love birds so I thought this place would be perfect for me! Was dead wrong. I went into the home and had to endure a ten minute long rant of an old low voiced man. Somewhere in between his talk about a piano and a chair I heard that Audubon only hung out there for a few weeks, he never actually lived there. I then expected to see artwork, or some of her personal belongings. Nope, just two floors of antiques and old bathtubs. On the top floor they had different types of prints, most of them were of the same painting, just a different color or cropping. I went on the porch and realized I was surrounded by these creepy spiders, Spinybacked Orb Weavers. The garden was okay, some interesting plants like bananas and orchids. But a lot of them looked dried out or wilted, the butterfly conservatory had much healthier plants. If you want to see some Audubon stuff, skip the museum, just go check out their gift shop. Saw more artwork in the shop and they're all prints, so save your money. Student discount of $7.50 so I didn't lose too much.

We got married at the Audubon House and it was the most beautiful setting. The Pros: * The venue is so beautiful that no additional ceremony décor is necessary * The venue rental fee is reasonably priced * The ladies that run the Audubon House are kind and very easy to work with * The rental fee is refundable in the event that rain forces you to another location * Great location on Key West, close to nice hotels, nightlife and great photo opp. Spots * There is so much canopy provided by the trees that a little rain will not even touch ground * The grounds are well lit so there is no need to rent extra lighting * All of the nooks make it easy to set up the different "areas" naturally The Cons: There really is no back-up plan for rain b/c they do not allow for tenting or sails (due to the antique brickwork and orchids in the trees) so you must secure a back-up location if there is a chance of rain Tip: I highly suggest hiring a planner/coordinator if you get married here. You will have to rent everything and all of those vendors will have to be coordinated on the event day. Additionally, your planner/coordinator will secure a back-up plan.

Absolutely loved Audubon House!!! The staff was so wonderful and the grounds are gorgeous. It was amazing to learn the history and the preservation. I loved the gift shop.... best in town!! No cheesy, gimmicky stuff- more items that will remind you of a wonderful weekend spent in Key West. My favorite part was that it showed how much history is on the island and is a nice departure from the wild Duval St. reputation Key West has. Audubon House is a MUST when visiting Key West!!!!

When we walked into the Audubon House and Tropical gardens serene setting, we knew it was where we wanted to get married! The gorgeous gardens and the initial tour by Joann sold it for us. It had the exact feel we were hoping for. The gardens are well covered by foliage so there was plenty of shade for a hot July day. The location is perfection, close to our guest's accommodations (Hyatt Centric) and close to all the bars for the after party on our wedding night! The space was perfect, the ceremony took place on the porch and the band was set up behind that. We turned the porch into the dancing stage and everyone loved it! We had about 125 people in attendance and it felt full but not crowded for the ceremony, the cocktail hour, the dinner, and then the dancing! I was concerned about there only being 2 bathrooms for that many people, but there were not issues - it was smooth sailing and no one had to wait long. Overall the venue exceeded my expectations, the sheer beauty was an amazing back drop for us to celebrate our wedding day and a place that we will continue to visit now that it holds so many memories. Better then ever with a new exhibit and the gardens shinning ever so bright! Such a peaceful, serene, full of life museum/gift shop/ gallery and more! Oh and the weddings that have taken place there are one of a kind= breathtaking!

I wasn't really sure what to expect but really enjoyed this place. We took the guided tour which is a must - it gives you a great sense of the house's history as it had various owners. We had a wonderful guide. The gardens and cook house are a must. Everything is preserved so beautifully and Audubon's work is showcased throughout the house.

This house has nothing to do with Audubon, well almost nothing, He was never in the house, didn't live or work there, and actually only spend 2 weeks in this part of Florida. That might be ok if they collected his original work to show, but they don't. The house shows only prints and not necessarily great ones. It is more of an antique museum, put together by a family that also had no connection to Audubon. You can buy Audubon prints in the shop but unless you want to see antiques, don't bother taking the tour.

Nice gardens. Nice people/tour guide. Audubon never lived here. Interesting history. Good for adults not for kids.
