This Natural Wonder Is the Most-searched in the World

"I noted the Aurora Borealis came in second with an average monthly search volume of 6,110, peaking in October and March; with only four to five hours of daylight in Iceland’s midwinter those long nights make the phenomenon easier to experience, and unlike all other states Alaska and Montana chose the Aurora Borealis as their number one destination, with Alaska having the highest average monthly Google searches per 100,000 residents at 236." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Mok is truly wonderful. When spots at Aurora Borealis Lodge were sold out during my time in Fairbanks, he went out of his way to find me another lodge where I could still enjoy the Northern Lights. I’m so grateful for his kindness and will definitely be back to take his tour again.

I was picked up at my Airbnb, near downtown Fairbanks, and along with a handful of other guests taken up to the lodge. The lodge could not be more perfectly situated for aurora view. There’s a large viewing deck with seating along the banister. If you’re cold, you can just go back inside the warm lodge and view from the large viewing windows while you sit on a cozy couch. It’s a cabin so it’s not a luxury stay by any means but the bathrooms are clean, there’s water and hot beverages, and plenty of seating. Mok, the host, is great! Highly recommended!

Amazing! Felt like family. Excellent communication through the entire booking process. Helpful recommendations before our arrival. Per recommendation we got an AWD SUV through Alaska Auto Rental, which saved us money and the car was great. Our 2nd floor room was fantastic. Lots of space w/ a kitchen. Comfy beds. Giant window with a couch for Aurora watching. Beautiful view during the day. We received walkie-talkie and text messages when auroras were spotted throughout the night. Lots of deck space for night viewing. A solar storm hit and we saw a phenomenal lightshow on New Years. We stayed five nights which worked out well because the first couple of nights the Aurora was dim. The location was not too far from Fairbanks and easy to reach. We ate in town every night. A ski area is located just a few minutes away and hiking just up the street. The only disappointment was all the snowshoes were broken.

We had a great time here! We could watch the aurora from our bed or couch, and Mok was awesome at notifying us when he saw the Aurora in the sky. He was also great at helping me with DSLR settings so that I could have perfect pictures of the aurora. He knew everyone’s name in the common area, and was interested in why all of us journeyed all the way to Alaska for aurora hunting. The location of the hotel is brilliant. It is right on the top of a mountain, and you can see everywhere in every direction! The most notable views are to the North of course. My first experience with auroras here was highly favorable. I just wish I could have stayed longer. We did book this place over six months ago, and two nights was all we could get. It was definitely all worth it! Also our room had great coffee in it. I know most people might overlook this, but it is really important when you are staying up all night, and watching the sky fire!

Absolutely the best photo opportunity in Fairbanks. Mok carefully plans out the viewing night by using online tools to predict and show where the clearest place to view and take great pictures even with your iPhone. We enjoyed our time with him. And will plan to do another in the future!

This is such a great place. I did extensive research on places to stay. The ABL is at the top of the summit at 2,300 feet. You can see in all directions. I stayed in the bottom floor room of Cedar Lodge. There is a deck 15 feet from your door and 2 large windows to look north for the Aurora. Full kitchen with a mini fridge. Large bathroom. This place is such a great location that it offers nightly tours for Aurora viewing. Mok was a great host. You have walkie-talkies in your room for him to give you a heads up if he sees Auroras that you don’t. You can even go next-door to the main lodge and have coffee and cookies and talk with him and the nightly visitors that are just there for the night tour and not staying at the place. I would recommend this to anyone. Way better than my stay at Chena Hot Springs resort.

We did an Aurora viewing trip and Mok picked us up from our hotel in Fairbanks. We really enjoyed the relaxed vibe of his lodge and he was great at keeping us updated on the Northern Lights status. We were lucky and the clouds cleared late in the night and we got to see them clearly with the naked eye. Mok also took a great photo of us with them which we plan to print and frame. We would definitely recommend the trip.

We booked Logan’s Chalet a year in advance! This is one of the stand alone accommodations. However, Mok included us in the activities of his tours which was much appreciated and we had a walkie talkie too. He is a master communicator and it was much appreciated. We did go to the lodge one night and waited for the aurora and it was a good idea for a tour group. Let me say again, Mok is a fabulous host! A few words about the Chalet which Mok’s dear friend built. The stairs to the loft are awkward and not suitable for anyone with any mobility issues but there is a lovely bedroom on the main floor (so put the young people in the comfy loft that has 2 queen beds). Logically, there are no large windows so aurora viewing really has to be outside. There is a “viewing platform” with the Chalet and we bought camp chairs and left them there although there is a bench but we put them in front of the chalet at night. There is a full kitchen and it’s well stocked. The heated toilet seat was fun and the shower was great. The entry room is a good idea but it is not heated and is too cold to leave boots or clothes in as they will be too cold to wear. Cleary Summit is the best place to view the aurora so grab a spot at this chalet. You won’t regret it! Thanks Mok!
