*Graphic warning* Do not stay in room 330
What was supposed to be a pleasant 1-night stopover at the end of our honeymoon turned into a nightmare, on Halloween no less. We woke up in the middle of the night to my absolute horror, discovered multiple bedbugs crawling over our bed and itchy welts on my arms and subsequently my back. It’s highly likely that the bedbugs infested the room for a long time; there were baby and adult sized bed bugs hiding in the bed upholstery and crawling on the walls.
When we informed the hotel, the male staff on duty at 4am on 31 Oct was unapologetic and made no effort to help us. What irked us most was his claim that he was “just a receptionist”- we were certainly met with a nasty reception. He also condescendingly asked why we did not check the rooms the night before. It defies logic that the onus of ensuring sanitary and health standards in a hotel should fall solely to guests. It is also common knowledge that bedbugs are adept at hiding in dark and inaccessible places to evade detection, which the hotel seems to be doing with its service recovery too.
The emotional and physical trauma aside, this level of service standards and cleanliness ultimately harms reputation of Icelandic tourism, since many international guests will pass through the hotel waiting for their flights.
This is genuine feedback, we are not asking for any compensation aside from a refund. I really do not wish upon others my experience, thus I strongly recommend the hotel take measures to eradicate the bedbugs quickly, while the low season approaches.
