A Solo Trip to the Arctic Helped Me Find Comfort Among Strangers

"Most of the adventures were booked through Aurora Village, the first hotel on my itinerary. Pretty much every outdoor winter sport was available, including the aforementioned snow-shoeing excursion with Juha Tuunanen, the hotel’s CEO who offered us a fire-building lesson—a necessary survival skill for any Lapland resident. We sat around the fire and drank cups of warm blueberry juice, watching the sky turn from gray to black at 3:30 p.m."

This place is AMAZING! The staff is super friendly and accommodating, they kept lunch open late for us, and opened breakfast early for us, due to our booked activities overlapping dining times. From the very start the staff was just amazing. They offer loads of fun activities that include all your winter gear you need. I recommend all the activities that are available, we loved every single thing we did. The cabin itself is just stunning, we saw the Aurora lights every evening right from our bed. The property lights aren’t too bright, so it’s perfect to spot the lights from the property. The whole design and location of this place is just perfect. They offer free snow shoes/skis to go off and explore on your own, which I really recommend, because the property is so big and beautiful. The restaurant was really yummy, we didn’t have one bad meal the whole time we were there. So sad to be leaving this beautiful place.

The location is fantastic. Being a bit further from the city might have been more beneficial for seeing the Northern Lights, but everything is truly amazing. The restaurant section especially deserves high praise. I would like to extend my deepest respect and gratitude to the chef and the entire team. Everything—absolutely everything—was outstanding. Without exaggeration, I must say that the hardest part of leaving this place will be saying goodbye to the legendary meals from this restaurant. The activities and their leaders were very warm, kind, and helpful. The reception was always ready to assist. There’s nothing to criticize. A big thank you to the entire team! Michel

The Village staff were very welcoming and helpful. The rooms/huts were very clean and comfortable with a great view at night of the sky. The snowmobile and husky trips were exciting and well managed and very worth while. Meeting the reindeer was interesting and again well organised. Would recommend the Village to anyone who wants different experience and a great chance to see the northern lights in their full splendor.

Fantastic place to stay. All of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The 3 course meal at dinner was amazing everyday. The activities we did, were great fun (fat bike forest trail, snowmobile safari, northern lights chasing by car, panoramic sauna). We were lucky to see the northern lights, which were amazing.

We had a fantastic time at Aurora Village! Cabins are warm and comfortable, great views with the large glass overhead winndows. The bathroom was compact but just right, the hot shower worked well for us. Very friendly staff at the reception, restaurant and for the various activities. I love the size and layout of the place, not too big, only about 2 minutes walk from the cabins to the reception and restaurant. And with the cabins amongst the trees, with the reindeer in the central enclosure, you really feel like you're immersed in nature. Lots of forest tracks to explore. The evening meals were outstanding, exactly the kind of food I love - great quality ingredients, cooked with skill to make really tasty, well seasoned and well-balanced meals. Elegant food without being fussy, and great variety from day to day. The jerusalem artichoke soup, arctic char and lemon risotto were some of the highlights. Portion sizes also very well judged, so you are nicely satisfied with starter/main/dessert, but not over-filled. They cater well for dietary requirements too. Breakfast was also great, with a huge choice from cereals, fruits, yoghurt, bread, pastries, cheese, ham, scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon and other cooked items. We enjoyed some great activities: reindeer feeding, reindeer sled, Aurora chasing, husky sledding. It was an awesome experience to travel through the amazing snowy landscapes, pulled by reindeer and by a team of dogs! We got some great views of the Aurora too. I would recommend you plan a visit to make the most of the scenery and the amazing activities, and - if you are lucky - you will get some good views of the northern lights as a bonus! This was a visit of a lifetime... though I would love to come back a second time :-)

We absolutely loved Aurora Village! Amazing place and the food was absolutely out of this world! Excursions were all brilliant. For us we appreciated that it is an older clientele rather than families with children. This was a real bucket-list holiday for us and it was really worth it!

We really enjoyed our holiday at Aurora Village. The cabins were magical and you could see the northern lights from your bed. Also the activities were so fun and the guides were so friendly. A special thank you to Lukas who did everything to make me feel at ease (because I’m pregnant), he really took care of the whole group during activities. We also loved the food which was very refined. You could tell it’s a family owned hotel because everyone is doing their job so well. We will definitely come back.

We had a great and relaxed time at Aurora Village, everything was so well arranged and nicely done, from the cabins with glass roof to the surroundings, the central building and the excursions directly from own location. Special compliments to the kitchen with every night a great and beautifully served 3 course diner!
