20 Best Small Towns in Australia

"Winton has a rich history as the birthplace of Australia's national airline, Qantas, as well as the home of 'Waltzing Matilda,' the folksong that doubles as the country's unofficial national anthem. More recently, this quirky town has become better known for its dinosaurs. Home to the world's largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils, the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum is the star attraction." - Travel + Leisure Editors

World class attraction, the guides are very knowledgeable and the architecture of the buildings are exceptional. I can't wait for the addition of the natural history museum.

You will need a full day to cover all the displays/areas. The highlight was the undercover dinosaur footprints with the accompanying explanation provided by the very informative tour guide. The self-guided dinosaur walk is also a must-do that also takes in great views of the country side from the jump-up. Good parking with toilets available.

Very interesting and worth visiting, a little south of Winton, but easy access, bitum road, plenty of parking, small coffee shop. We booked on line, but can purchase tickets there. Would allow at least 2 plus hours.

We did the 4 hr tour, visited 3 different rooms, with 3 different guides, with time between to take photos or buy souvenirs. Lots of bones to check out, with some majorly important skeletons. Had a chat to one of the technicians who was working her way through the rubble. Last week they found a 3mm claw!!! Another lady has been working on the same "packet" for 5 weeks and is probs only an 1/8 of the way through! The footprint room is quite an amazing feat. Took 3 years to scan, photograph and move the 99m jigsaw puzzle to its current position at the museum. It is the largest in the world. Texas's is only 55m!

What a great experience we had today at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs at Winton. Well worth the time to see and the children will love it. If you have a caravan there is plenty of room for parking near the centre.

Absolutely middle of nowhere but still loved it. Interestingly all of our tour group was adults. Tour takes 3.5 hours as with couple of mini breaks, I guess it could be shortened but I understand why it is like that. We drove in a car but check weather and road conditions prior to see any closures, damage due to floods. If you’re visiting any other Dino sites additional days may be required and we didn’t plan for any.

An overall good experience, but cost is pretty high. Also after the major rains in the area, flies, midgies & mosquitoes were very bad. (bring a bucket of repellent). What they're finding out there is amazing, and certainly worth a visit.

My husband and I visited this museum without kids or grandkids and we loved it. Our next visit will be with our grandkids aged 6 - 11. The staff are very knowledgeable.
