My stay at the Austria Hof lodge can be perfectly described as, "Ok." My partner and I stayed for 3 nights. It was one of the cheapest options available in Mammoth at the time of our booking, so that definitely gives them some points. I'm not too familiar with Mammoth and did not do proper research to recognize the ski lift that is walking distance from here would be closed (we came primarily to snowboard). I would only come back in the future if the nearby ski lift was open. Otherwise, I would definitely opt for something closer to town.
Overall, the room was very average. My chief complaint is about our toilet. It smelled absolutely disgusting. After sitting on it for more than 30 seconds your nose was assaulted with the clear smell of an unclean toilet. You know, that old, dirty urine smell? It was pretty gross. The bed was also super lumpy and uncomfortable and the fridge does not have a freezer. Honestly, I wouldn't mention the latter two issues based on the price we paid, but the dirty toilet was something I've never experienced, even at a budget hotel.
Lastly, I give 3 stars because Jo Louise, who appears to work the front desk in the morning, is an absolute gem. My interactions with her were always very kind, warm, and welcoming. However, my interactions with the older man with long hair (I think he actually may be the owner or manager) were not stellar. I came down to purchase a sprite and a water from the front desk and saw a sign that said the front desk person has stepped away and to call a certain number from the nearby phone. So, I did this and was greeted with a gruff, "Hello." I said to inquired to the man on the other end whether there was someone in the hotel to help me or if they were off the property (which would be completely understandable since this place is pretty small). His answer was, "Well, I answered the phone, so obviously I'm here, right?" This just really rubbed me the wrong way. How am I supposed to know if the extension doesn't lead to a cellphone? Like, it's 2021 my man, I have no idea where this phone's extension leads to. He then proceeded to come downstairs and sold me the water and sprite (which was pretty ridiculous at $3.75 for both) and just had a generally bad attitude.
Overall, all of the staff I interacted with at this place was super cool, nice, and welcoming. But to the older man with the long gray hair, who again I think may be the owner, no, it is not obvious when I call an extension that it means you are at the hotel. Again, if you see this, please let me know how I would have any idea where that extension leads to. That whole interaction just left a sour taste in my mouth, especially everyone else working at Austria Hof was so kind and friendly.
Edit- the owner, Joseph, reached out to me and the person who provided me bad service was not actually him. I stand by my review, but I'm going to upgrade to 4 stars because I appreciate an establishment that follows up. Just clean those toilets, please!!
