25 Coffee Shops to Visit Before You Die

"Walking through the Old City of Jerusalem is an exhilarating but overwhelming experience. Hurried teens pushing tiny wooden carts filled to the brim with dates and nuts, local shoppers, tourists, priests, rabbis, imams, and merchants throng the streets. Visitors and Jerusalemites alike often search for a place to cool off and escape the noise and crowd. One of the best places to do so is at the Austrian Hospice. Though the name may sound rather grim, the Austrian Hospice is actually a 19th-century guesthouse that originally catered to Austrian and German visitors in Jerusalem. Unassuming from the outside, the building’s charming interior is the perfect place for a short siesta from exploring the area’s myriad historical and religious sites. Better yet, its roof offers what is arguably the best view of the Old City. From the roof, you can see the Dome of the Rock, the Armenian Church of Our Lady of the Spasm, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, all of which make for a strikingly unique skyline. Even the Mount of Olives—including the golden onion domes of the Russian Orthodox Monastery and the many headstones of the ancient Jewish Cemetery—is visible from this vantage point.  After taking in the cityscape, it’s worth spending some time exploring the rest of the building. Founded in 1854 by the Archbishop of Vienna, the Austrian Hospice still hosts guests, but has also become a favorite with locals, owing to its Viennese-style cafe, replete with a chandelier and burgundy upholstered chairs. If you need to refresh yourself before hitting the Old City’s bustling streets again, order an iced coffee. Deceptively named, it’s actually coffee that has been thoroughly blended with a dash of milk and topped with a generous helping of rich, freshly made whipped cream. If you’re in the mood for something more substantial, you can’t go wrong with their apfelstrudel. Another must-see is the tiny but opulent Austrian Catholic chapel, which still holds the occasional mass in German. Before you leave, walk along the hall just below the rooftop—it’s home to an art exhibit, which rotates every year. By the time you’ve taken in all there is to see, you’ll be refreshed and ready to brave the bustling streets again." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Delicious strudel. You would never know you are in the middle of the Old City. I felt like I was in a cafe in Europe. You order at the cashier and then it’s very quick to pick up your food. Plenty of seating and has an outdoor space. If you have time, it’s interesting to walk on the second floor and read the history on the walls. Nice view from the rooftop (but I prefer the view from the Church of the Redeemer).

A pastoral garden surrounds a beautiful building, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere. The apple strudel is excellent, the Spätzle surprisingly good, and the Austrian beers are just right. Everything is clean, quiet, and the service is warm and attentive. And a small cultural surprise: Austrian teens doing their national service there. Btw, the rooms are basic, but cosy and clean. Beautiful wide windows.

A few moments of escapism amidst the bustling alleys of the old city, right off the Via de la Rosa. Nice old building, quiet garden, varied sitting and eating sites. We very much enjoyed the goulash soup, the chicken breast schnitzel, the warm wine and the apfelstrudel, all reasonably priced.

Wonderful piece of Austria in the middle of Jerusalem ! If you're visiting the magnificent old city of Jerusalem under the sun, you might need a break at some point, on a nice terrace in the backyard, to drink a cold Viennese Coffee. Well, don't hesitate !

A bit tricky to find, small island of peace, tranquility and traditional Austrian apple strudel in the Christian quarter of the Old City. The roof (pay with a 5NIS coin for access, or pay at reception) has a beautiful view of the Old City, but there’s no shade or seats up there, so it’s only a viewing platform. They also have a nicely decorated room for piano recitals.

A fantastic spot to recharge in the midst of the Old City of Jerusalem. It's great to enjoy a cold beer, Sachertorte, apple strudel, or other cakes and snacks with your coffee. The view from the rooftop is breathtaking! Have 5 nis coin for the rooftop's entry.
