I had a fantastic day at Autoworld, but given that I am a bit of an automotive geek, that comes as no surprise. I will, however keep my emotions aside whilst I write this review.
So, what is autoworld? It is a massive hangar full of cars, ranging from Belgium's own Minerva and Fabrique National to Italy's Bugatii type 44s, Ford model T, a BMW type 326 and a Ferrari Testarossa! Well, they have a good selection of vintage and classic cars.
They also have a little section about Belgium's automotive history, the ENB, their circuits, the most famous of them all being Spa Francorchamps. As you walk along the top balcony, they have classic cars against the back drop of Eau Rouge corner as you look up when you've just exited the very tight La Source hairpin. Oh, and they also have one of probably only 50ish Italdesign Giugiaro Aztecs ever built.
Oops, I didn't realise I had my geek on there. Anyway getting back to useful stuff, they also have a wide selection of motorcycles, which by the way i am not interested at all.
Getting to Autoworld is pretty straightforward. Take the Metro line 1 going to Stockel or Metro Line 5 going to Hermann Debroux and get off at Merode. Once you come up to ground level, look for the Cinquantennaire Park (the big stone gateway that kind of looks like Brandenbourg Gate) and start walking towards it. Autoworld is housed in the left building.
Buying tickets online costs 8 euros. You just print your ticket and show it to the guys at the counter. They scan your ticket and let you in. Spend as much time as you want and enjoy it, for it is beautiful!
They have a cafe and shop on the ground floor and toilets are situated in the balcony section, which is to your left as you look into Autoworld from the entrance. The shop is essentially a scale models shop and there's nothing there you can't get at modelzone.
For me, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, because I love cars, I love their history, I love the engineering, the science, everything! When I go back to Brussels again, I will definitely return to Autoworld.
