A Guide to Silverton, Colorado

"For what is arguably the best pizza in town, head to Avalanche Brewing Company, which also brews their own Silverton- and San Juan-inspired beer. If you’re not feeling those menu items, there's also wraps, tacos, salads, and both savory and sweet “Mountain Dots,” which are pizza dough balls covered in garlic butter and parmesan, or cinnamon sugar and butter." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Liked the Buena Vista Smash Pale Ale, good spot to stop in for a beer! Service was good and decor was nice. We all had a good chuckle at the handle bar antlers.

Incredibly Delicious Craft Beer and tasty pizza! We visited on a Thursday evening in October near the end of the tourist season. I did a flight of beers. They were all solid, but the Dubbel Jeopardy Honey Belgian and White Out Wit were OUTSTANDING!! The Bonnie Bell Vienna Lager was also very tasty. I say this is someone who has over the years tasted a lot of different beers. I am a picky beer snob. The wait staff was super nice. The pizza was very good as well, but the beer was truly a special treat! Please give Avalanche a try!

Google
Where do I even begin? The most FABULOUS meal I have ever had in Silverton & the tastiest creation ever- Palisade Peach Pizza?! Whoever came up with this is an absolute culinary genius!!! Everyone at the table was in love with my pizza & I happily shared because the entire world needs to taste this masterpiece. Then the buffalo chicken tacos…again, fabulous. The coconut margarita was heavenly. The service was outstanding & I was beyond impressed. Very nice job ladies!!!! I can’t wait to return & I am excited to finally have a place to eat in Silverton that I am thrilled to return to. Thank you for making our already beautiful day absolutely perfect with an exceptional dining experience!!

Google
Best beer and tacos I have had in a while! Two thumbs up. Tacos were authentic Mexican tacos! Excellent exotic pizza and worth the money. 5% cash discount fyi

Ate here for lunch with my husband and it was good! The pepperoni pizza was excellent. I can't speak for any of the other dishes offered, but I think most of these reviewers were expecting too much. It's a brewery. You should come for the beer, not the food. All the beer we tried was exceptional! They all had good flavors and satisfied our craft beer hankering! The decor is neat and it's a clean place. We sat outside because we had our dog with us. The tables had umbrellas for shade and there was a water bowl for dogs. It's a great place to sit and relax while enjoying the mountain views for a while. Our waitress was very friendly and gave us great recommendations on which beer to try. I would recommend this brewery to all craft beer lovers!

Stopped in for lunch, the food was very good! We had a supreme pizza and some chicken tacos, both excellent! They have a full bar. We spent about $20 a person.

Google
Great little Gem in Silverton, one road off the main drag and well worth the stop. Delicious pizza, their dough is something special, must be the water! Order the flight, you are in for a treat, mini ski boots, mini bindings on what in my opinion is a true shot ski setup! Update: The new location is fantastic! Right in the heart of main street! The dough ball appetizers are fantastic, be sure to get extra spicy jalapeno dipping sauce!

Google
Wonderful service and really great food. The best place to stop when coming off the train or out of the mountains! Plus the beer is easily the best in town. There were many options for our whole family. We will be back!

Yelp
They advertized gluten free beers but had none available and the cider we ordered was spoiled, tasted like vinager. They added the drinks they were out of to our bill anyway. 3 out of 5 of our party ended up getting food poisoning . Overall go to the brewery down the street.

Yelp
Interesting bar and restaurant in this tiny little town in the mountains. We didn't eat much here besides the cheesy bread and it was decent. Their ginger ale I liked because it was the local Durango brand. The place was completely empty and the waitresses were very awkward and not so inviting. Not the best look if you are looking for business and more customers!

Laurie G.

Yelp
We stopped here for drinks. Beer was cold. I got a mixed drink that was delicious. Service was great. Prices were comparable with other businesses. We were able to easily sit outside and not be rushed off. Great spot.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch after riding the train up from Durango. Service was about what you would expect from a touristy place that doesn't need to build a returning clientele. Slightly off putting and not terribly attentive. The pesto pizza we ordered was pretty good as was the Greek salad. The Thai chicken wrap was awfully mediocre. Lacked flavor and the way it was rolled, one entire half was just greens. Fortunately, there was enough pizza to share.

Yelp
Food was decent. Got a chicken Caesar salad which was a good size and tasty. The mio mountain dots were delicious. Wings were good too. Tacos were eh. Beer was good.

Yelp
Went there on 9/23/21 for lunch. We rode the train up to Silverton. There were a lot of waitresses but still seemed to be running around a lot and it wasn't busy. They have 12 beers on tap from light to dark. They have wraps and pizza. The double grapefruit ipa was nothing special. We each had a wrap. Nothing too exciting but good. Cheers!

Lauren K.

Yelp
The service was weird. Uncomfortable. The restaurant was mostly empty and we were seated next to other people. Not ideal. Then the waitress knew nothing about the menu. On my way to the bathroom several waitstaff walked in front of me. Cut me off. Just weird way of acting with a customer. Ambience is very hip and the menu doesn't match. Pizza was terrible. Very expensive. $28 for 18" GF crust. Then had to pay $1 for a pizza box to take it to go. Why? Had half the food arrive and no utensils to eat. Then when the server came back I asked for utensils. She asked if we needed anything else. Only half our food was there. So I told her that. She seemed surprised. Won't return.

Yelp
Drunk was good (purple haze) but my Ceaser chicken wrap was horrid! I think they use a canned chicken seasoned the same for all their chicken wraps. My husband had the pesto chicken wrap and wasn't thrilled.

Yelp
Taking a road-trip thru Colorado from California. Stopped by this ski themed pizza shop and it tasted great my partner and I shared a meat pizza food tasted great, a tiny bit pricey but it's understandable our servers were nice

Yelp
To be honest, my wife and I visited here because Golden Block Brewing, up the road, was closed for renovations. They have a spectacular blackberry Kolsch we always buy a Crowler of when in Silverton. Anyway, I'm glad they were closed, because it gave us a chance to try a new microbrewery. Avalanche Brewing offers flights of six of their beers, delivered to you on an old ski. We sat by the front window and got a great photograph of our flight with a snow capped peak in the background (see attached photo). Our flight consisted of: Alpine Start Coffee Stout 6.5%, Basic Batch Pumpkin Porter 5.5%, Bonita Blonde Ale 5%, White Out Wit 5%, Change of the Saison 6.4%, and Hansel's Hazy IPA 7.2%. They were all quite good, but the White Out Wit , and Hazy IPA were the standouts. They were better than Golden Block's renditions of those styles. We ordered a Crowler of the Wit because it was so good. Overall, I like the Kolsch by Golden Block the best, but Avalanche has more higher quality beers than Golden Block. Glad we stopped in.

Yelp
Great food, great service and a great location. The highlight for me is the 32oz Backcountry Bombers that are available to drink in, or take out. Took a Sanjuanderer Hells Lager straight to the face and it was delicious!! If you like tasty beer and looking at mountains, this place is for you!

Yelp
Weird vibe below average food Tourist trap for train riders. Good thing they don't have to rely on locals for their business

Yelp
Came into the Avalanche on our layover from the Durango and Silverton train tour. The place was hopping. We had the shrimp ceviche appetizer and Thai wrap. Both were very good. The tortilla chips with the ceviche were a little hard, but tasted fine. The Thai wrap could use a little more peanut sauce. I had a pint of their Hefeweizen and it was nice and cold. I can't speak to the other food options in town, but the Avalanche is a good spot to check out. Sorry I didn't get any food pics!

Yelp
We love a brewery! The beer was great as expected. I particularly enjoyed the Strawberry Rhubarb but we also enjoyed the Mexican, Pilsner, and Oatmeal Stout. I do have one complaint, we didn't have enough to time (or a bed to roll into) to drink more. The food was delicious. We had cauliflower tacos, Neapolitan pizza, al pastor tacos and the Thai salad. They were all scrumptious. I'm so glad my family shares. A big thank you to Corey for her hospitality with a group of 14, you rocked! I want to go back for more eats and drinks as well as to spend time in the town. Silverton is a historic and charming mountain town with beautiful view. Beware the highway is winding with hairpin turns and little to no shoulders.

Yelp
Last weekend my friend and I rode the train up to Silverton and had lunch at this place. We decided to split a Greek salad and then share a pizza that was AWESOME!! It was like a caprice salad on a pizza--fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato and balsamic reduction. Omg. I didn't want to get back on the train I ate so much! I just wanted to stay and have another one for dinner. Try it! Excellent service too! Really fast even though they were full.

Yelp
My husband read good reviews of this restaurant. Being out of town we love trying new places. Service was so slow. My tacos came. Dry and barely warm Salsa in these little take out containers was boring. My man's wrap came prewrapped in paper and warmed up. His beer was " ok" We had no silverware. My jalapeño margarita was very good. Yet I had to get up and go to the bar and ask for silverware, more napkins and another drink; meanwhile our server was 3 tables over having her lunch and folding napkins. Also my brother had just died. I was having a tearful moment. She came by was non observant and loudly said How is everything. Not a good experience at all. If you want fast food with little flavor and aren't interested in good service. This IS the place for you

JR S.

Yelp
Tacos here are legit . I prefer the green salsa but both were above average imho. The pizza we had was ok but not great by any stretch. Service was average. Atmosphere is a coffee shop/bar kinda vibe. A decent beer selection but for some reason not a single one that I can honestly say I like and I tried nearly all of them. Most of the beers were honestly simply not good at all. So not sure what's up with that. So, tacos tacos tacos. If you step in here. Try their steak tacos.
google avatar

Carrie S.

Yelp
Service was ok. Food was expensive for what was offered. The appetizer pizza bites were raw and the dipping sauce cold. The Thai wrap was good. The Cubano wrap was way too spicy for a Cuban. I know it's off season, but we definitely won't be back!

Yelp
Decided to try Avalanche Brewing when the other pizza places in area were closed for a Monday. Ordered the Supreme Pizza. Ingredients were fresh and tasted delicious. Also ordered it with a size of dots (doughy bites). These were also delicious. I ordered the Not Hefeweizen and was very impressed with the depth of flavor in the beer. Highly recommend! 4 stars only because it was a little pricey.

Mark D.

Yelp
Our waitress was rude. I asked for corn tortillas due to the need for the food to be gluten free. Tacos were delivered on flour tortillas and I politely told the waitress that I had asked for corn tortillas and she said, "No, you asked for flour tortillas." My wife and our two friends insisted that I had asked for corn and she sassily retorted with, "No, he asked for flour tortillas." Absolute garbage. On the bright side, the al pastor tacos were pretty tasty.

Steve L.

Yelp
Kind of a mixed review on this place. Went for dinner and ate inside. My wife split a Mediterranean/Greek pizza with her daughter and really liked it. They also split a salad and it was good, too. I had a wrap and unfortunately it was not so good. The wrap was dry and the fillings were a little sparse. I wouldn't order a wrap again. Service was ok: not great but not bad either.

Yelp
A bunch of friends and I are in Silverton for a weekend of racing and we had dinner and drinks at Avalanche. A few of us ordered pizza and a few ordered wraps. There were lots of beers and a few cocktails ordered. Beers and cocktails were good. Food was above average. The real star, though, was our server Audrey. She was friendly, fun, accommodating, and super proficient at her job! Huge thanks to Audrey for making this a 5 star experience for us.

Tom W.

Yelp
This place is just meh. Food portions are small. Prices are high. Service was just mediocre. Kind of a gotcha until you get the tab: they charge a separate fee for salad dressing if you order a salad, which is just ridiculous.
google avatar

Judy B.

Yelp
We met old friends for lunch. Neapolitan pizza was great and Thai salad. Beers good and the service excellent. See pictures on previous review. The only thing we needed was a little shade. 70 in the bald sun is hot!!

Scott J.

Yelp
Unlike other people, I am going to leave a beer review. Had a great rhubarb Gose. The pale and IPA's I would give a 4 out of 5. None of the beers were thin and all had good flavor. No review on the food

Kam J.

Yelp
Was greeted by a host that literally started at us and barely said anything. This must be a place that locals come for beer and know better than to eat the food. Ordered tacos and ceviche (waitress talked highly of the ceviche). Taco meat was dry and had canned pineapple on it. Ceviche tasted of brine and very salty. Took one bite and my diarrhea spidey sense said NO. I looked at pizza on tables next to us. Looked very underwhelming. I do not like to give bad reviews. This one just flat out deserves it. The host, waitress and food. All very drab. Tourists beware. Owners, please get it together of don't bother.

Suzy S.

Yelp
Great food Quick and great service Great beer Food overpriced Would come back though!

Yelp
Really good gluten free pizza. Service was fast, prices are reasonable for this town.

Yelp
This is the perfect small town experience in the perfect small town!! Not only was there a great beer selection for my boyfriend, but they even had some local Colorado whiskey for me! To top it off, they even hit the food out of the park. Between the pizza, wraps, and salads there is something for everyone!

Yelp
After a bad experience at Golden Block Brewery, we wandered down here and had a wonderful experience. The staff was super responsive and got water for our dogs without us asking. Decent food and real good beer.

Erin Y.

Yelp
We had a great lunch after riding the train. We had a variety of wraps and tacos, and they were all delicious and fresh. The service was fast and everyone was super nice!

Yelp
Friendly staff, loved the Purple Haze cocktail and surprisingly not weird peach pesto pizza.

Michael R.

Yelp
Great pizza, we had the Mediterranean and beer was on point! Outdoor dining was a plus as long as weather held out

Mathew H.

Yelp
Great service. Fun and lively. Shrimp ceviche was fabulous as were our tacos. My wife had shrimp tacos and I had the carnitas. Washed them down with coconut margaritas. Will have to try the brew next time.

Yelp
After visiting Durango, Colorado, we decided to head up the mountain and check out Silverton. We stopped at this cozy little spot after a friends recommendation. And I'm so glad we did! The pizzas here are beyond good. The crust is definitely house made. We ordered the bbq pizza and the Thai pie. Yummmm! So good!
google avatar

Dillar S.

Yelp
Great customer service and good beer! Cute little place tucked off the side street from the train stop. The pizza looked amazing - but we didn't have enough time to order one.
google avatar

Miranda C.

Yelp
Got the Mediterranean pizza to go. So yummy! Would definitely like to try more of their menu!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Pretty simple - great pizza, great beer, great cinnamon dots (with cream cheese frosting on the side)!!! Silverton is the cutest town and this place is worth a pit spot after a long drive or a long hike. You can even get cans of beer to go so if that doesn't convince you, I'm not sure what will. They even gave me some tastes because I couldn't decide which one to take home.
google avatar

Yelp
I needed lunch pretty bad by the time I got to Silverton on a recent driving trip, and although I had inspected a couple yelp menus looking for something green chile related, the place I settled on was closed Wednesdays (and not indicated as such on Yelp, for shame!) So I came here as a second try, and not disappointed. I went with a pizza that I think I would basically call a Hawaiian with green chile - a combo that I wouldn't say I would have thought of myself, but was really pretty good. The crust especially was tasty, sort of hand tossed style but with a little salt on the outside, some herbs in there maybe? I swear I tasted but did not see rosemary. But let's just say I ate the whole thing and it helped my combination altitude/sunshine/sinus cold headache quite a bit. I didn't try and beer, but they did have a decent looking list, plus clearly brewing some if not all on-site. It was February when I was there, so a slow-ish Wednesday lunch in the off season, but I bet this place is busy in the summer. Would not hesitate to stop again if I was heading through.

Jamie R.

Yelp
We had a large group so we tried several things on the menu. The southwest chicken and Cubano wraps were edible but not enjoyable. The tacos were ok but nothing to write home about. The pizza was the best thing that we tried on the menu and even that left something to be desired.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
Might as well be a morgue no service what so ever waitress had to return twice to get a 2 cocktail order 3rd time back she told us out of scotch, I ordered a maker's mark with a ice water back I got a glass of water never will we be back stay away
google avatar

Benjamin R.

Yelp
Avalanche Brewing is one of about four places to eat in Silverton, especially if you're getting in after 7pm. My dad and I were happy with the food and beer, and the proprietor was also quite friendly. We ordered a pizza and a wrap. My dad was happier about the pizza than I was--I live in NY so great pizza is bountiful and I'm spoiled--but we both liked the wrap and the beer. I would go back if I were in Silverton again.

Matt C.

Yelp
I was more impressed with the town than anything. You must stop in Silverton to cool off during the Summer. The beer is fresh and very good. I can't speak for the food as I had none. The service is fast and friendly. It's crowded and I sat at the bar fyi. If I'm close to Silverton again next Summer I'll do this place again for sure.

Melinda D.

Yelp
Sat at the bar for 15 minutes and every server avoided eye contact... place wasn't even busy. Would not recommend!!
google avatar

Yelp
This is some of the worst food for 50 miles. First off let me say that if you're hungry Silverton Colorado is probably the last place you want to go for food. With that being said avalanche brewing has to scrape the bottom when it comes to flavor and quality. My wife and I just picked up two pizzas and a cheese quesadilla with chicken from there and now we are living with deep regret. No matter how many toppings and no matter how much cheese you place on their food you cannot get it to taste good at all. After ordering three toppings of cheese on a pizza there was less cheese than an ordinary pizza place uses with any of their pizzas. The crust tastes like it was pre-frozen and risen with chemicals and definitely not yeast. There's absolutely no way anything is made from scratch here because it has zero flavor. I have held off for 4 years prior to ripping on this restaurant but after coming to Silverton consecutively I have to speak up. This demonstrates the lack of care that the owner has for their customers and are simply focused on one-time visit tourists as a means to make profit. This is the final time I will patron this restaurant. Do yourself a favor and run to any other restaurant preferably one out of town. Sorry Silverton but the food quality in this location is one of the primary factors that I hesitate vacationing here and I live in Colorado.
google avatar

Sandra H.

Yelp
The beer and service were good. They don't have any blonde ales. The pizza is not crisp.. it's over-priced for the size & minimal toppings on it. We shared one pizza, which is not enough for two people. However, rather than order more food, we decide to consider it a light lunch & fill up somewhere else for dinner.
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
Drove up last week to visit friends there, had another thai pizza, beers/drinks, very good fast friendly service, pizza was out in10-15 minutes. This is now my go-to for food in Silverton. Wasn't packed with tourists, at least not while we were there.
google avatar

Bonnie M.

Yelp
We were here on a Monday evening. It wasn't busy but most seats were taken. There were only two servers, one wasn't very helpful and the other spent a fair bit of time socializing with other customers so it slowed down service. We ordered a beer, soda and quesadilla. The quesadilla was below average, no flavor.
