Yelp
This place is a real poser: it appears to do the big bulk of its business as a traditional neighborhood pizza joint, but it also offers Italian fare out of the usual run in the mill pasta-and-more-pasta vein that borders on fine cuisine. It's really, really good (and the pizza was pretty good, too). We particularly enjoyed the Siciliano Panini (done on sub rolls, which is actually more homestyle), basically a roasted eggplant sandwich, which was sublime, and the excellent crust on the pizza. The Prosciutt and Mozz was also excellent.
We had earnest and friendly service that was interrupted quite a bit by the fact there was no good way for the single server, who doubled as the cashier, to get to us except by going all the way down the end of the counter and food line and coming all the way back out. (Avanti could double staff efficiency but just finding a place for a cutout at the front counter.)
We took a mandatory one star -- nearly two-star -- reduction for forcing us to watch Fox News on the TV screen was we ate our meal. It was so unappealing it nearly ruined an otherwise lovely and unexpected surprise. The whole idea of putting a TV at the end of the dining area is anathematic to having a nice quiet media-free family dinner, beyond the unpleasant choice of programming.
I sort of wish this place was split in two -- a different location for the Trattoria part, with enough room for table service for the excellent cuisine, and keep the current one just as a takeout counter-service-only place. As it is, the food is well more than a cut above your typical strip mall Italo-American fare.
